Forging a Square Buckle

  • In this video I show how to forge a square buckle for a 1 inch strap. I go through all the steps to make the outside section, size it to 1 inch, I show how to forge weld it together and how to make the pin. There are several special tools that I use to make the buckle. The main tool is the 1 inch square bar mandrel. This was just made from mild steel tapered on one end. The second special tool is the half round punch that I use to make the notch for the pin. Other than those 2 easy to make tools I just use standard equipment every blacksmith would have.

At Beckett’s Blacksmithing I specialize in hand forged products and custom decorative ironwork. I use traditional tools and methods and heat my steel in a coal fired forge. In addition to this, I use modern tools such as welders, power tools, and gas torches to bring this ancient trade into the modern era.

As someone who really only knows metal working from a jewelry perspective, this is crazy to watch. I’d love to do this, though. I’d love to make a belt completely by scratch. I’ve long thought it would be a good gift for my dad because my mom is easy to make stuff for my dad. I don’t know. I guess he respects quality and simplicity so it’s often hard to get a good gift

Thanks! Small stuff is really tough to do in the forge. Buckles for your pants are a bit bigger and are actually pretty fun to do. They are a good size and you can really personalize them. Thanks for watching.

That was some beautiful, no BS, smooth work. First time in a long time that I found a video where I didn't need to mute it due to annoying chatter or bad music. +1 subscriber for ya, sir.

Just watched your belt buckle video... I want to try to make a buckle too. Thanks for showing the process!!!

Thanks for watching. This method is the easiest way I have found to make buckles. It only has one little forge weld in it. I usually make several at once incase the weld gets messed up.

Thanks. I tried a few different methods of making these small buckles but found this method was the simplest and worked the best.

Thanks. This is a pretty good starter project for forge welding. It is small stock so it heats up and welds easy and if it gets messed up it is easy enough to throw it out and make new one.

Nice! Always fun to see the sparks of a weld. Whats the buckle weigh in at?

Thanks. That was just a tiny weld. The buckle weighs 1.5 oz. The pin for the buckle I made from a part I got from you parents piano!
