  • Some people said I needed to do more clickbait stuff. Others said I have big Hbomb energy. I combined them together, and created: plagarism*
Others say the intro is still going. They were right then, and they're right now.
This was fun to make. I can see why people do it. Please never ask me to make clickbait again. It makes me feel dirty. I was too far into the "joke" around doing a clickbaity title and ripping off hbomb that by the time I realised it was a mistake it was too late, and the infinitely better titles suggested by my Patreons couldn't be used because half the video wouldn't make sense. The joke has only become more of a mistake as time marched forwards
Also there's a lot of audio and footage chopping, which frustrates me. The HD file of this is 20GB. The UHD file was 80GB. Davinci Resolve was having NONE of it, and then the credits were screwy so I had to delete the old video. But despite it being unlisted and not sharing a link, 6 of yous saw it before I took it down to upload a corrected version! What's going on there, TH-cam?!

The problem with the original Xen isn't that "it sucks." It's that Valve over-committed to the "alien nature" of it. You end up with terrain which is virtually unrecognisable, meaning the player is no longer equipped to deduce how to proceed with the game. Thematically that makes sense, in that it's supposed to immerse the player in the surreal strangeness of the environment. In practice, however, it forces a severe disconnect as the player has to fall back on incredibly basic trial and error. Stick your head in all the holes, hit Use on everything, jump on all the things, hope to eventually stumble into the path forward by blind chance. When you do that, it ceases to matter what terrain looks like or how it feels. We're not using environmental cues to solve logical puzzles. We're disregarding the environment in favour of methodically (or chaotically) trying all possible combinations.
I still like Xen because it has some very neat ideas, but it lacks an overall ruleset for the player to follow. The game ceases to communicate. Black Mesa's Xen is... kind of a mess in its own right, being DRASTICALLY too long for what it is and padded with too many walking simulator segments. However, the Crowbar Collective folks did manage to impart the sort of "visual language" to the world that Valve never did. They left the player a ledge to grab onto, and a reason to pay attention.

My issue with Xen is that a lot of combat scenarios suffer from issues like how open they can be (like the factory section where you're being shot up by grunts while trying to avoid them, also going on spinny elevators while not knowing where an alien slave/Vort will blast you once you get to the top. Good luck if you have a glitch that makes the Alien grunts shoot you through the pods that you have to break before you can KILL them!) And exploration in Xen feels a lot less rewarding as you don't really come across anything interesting compared to previous chapters (I guess the weird stealth segment was kind of neat).

My favorite part about Black Mesa's story is both the humanizing of the marines, and the public radio broadcasts. The broadcasts with their emergency signal make it all feel very real, and the radio and dialogue from the marines make them feel so human. These are U.S soldiers, most of them probably in their late teens or early 20's, who have been ordered to not only execute innocent people, but also end up pretty much all dying for it. It really makes Half-Life feel as tragic as it should.

This is great and all, but I believe you shouldn't really play Black Mesa without having played Half- Life 1 because you miss out on all the tiny bits of lore the Black Mesa team overlooked. Like the fact that the nihilanth's third arm has been grafted onto him artificially, but in Black Mesa the arm is natural. The lore of Half-Life is very vague in general and these tiny details can help you personally develop an opinion on it. Having a third party create a remake can destroy these details.

They've gone from a serious threat to a mild nuisance, even becoming cute by the endgame... then you discover where they've all been coming from. You meet the hulking beast of a mama, and it almost feels like she personally wants revenge against you for mass slaughtering her babies. It'd be like if before saving Peach from Bowser, you had to face of the great mother of all goombas, and answer for your crimes of stomping so many of them through your game. They push their advantage any chance they get. As you show yourself to be a threat, they start holding back more and more, until eventually in Forget About Freeman only the shotgunners are still rushing you, everyone else is mostly trying to stay back, especially the corpsmen. Basically, by FAF the military is not targeting you, they are AFRAID of you.

I like how Black Mesa added a sense of continuity to Half-life 2 in which Gordon is already a skilled fighter and knows how to protect himself with guns and such, because in it, once you acquire your first weapon, you don’t use it to protect yourself, you use it as a tool to escape EVERY CP OFFICER IN CITY 17.

Also, playing HL2 after HL1 makes you (or, at least, me) think "Hang on... _I'M_ the one all these rebellion people are rallying behind!? You got the wrong guy! I barely know what I'm doing here!" but playing HL2 after Black Mesa makes you think "Alright, yeah, that makes sense. I've beat tougher odds before. I'm a pretty skilled combatant-hell, I've defeated probably like 100 US Marines single-handedly and slaughtered hundreds more aliens! Follow me, I'll take point!"
Idk HL1 mostly felt like Gordon was constantly panicking the whole time, flailing his guns in random directions and happening to get lucky, while Black Mesa really makes it seem like Gordon knows what he's doing after a while.

This was because people believed that it fired slower but did more damage than the MP40, which people believed fired faster but was weaker, despite them having the same stats. @@zechsblack5891 It's a shame how much Tribes is forgotten, or not even known about. It was the OG big outdoor team shooter with vehicles (I guess Warzone was too, but with RTS elements), a bit before the Battlefield games. I really want Tribes to make a comeback. It's too bad that the devs of Tribes: Ascend dropped support (ie: took down servers) of it for years to make Smite... so of course the game was dead in the water when they brought the servers back up (sour taste in mouths intensifies).
What the game really needed at the time, to become a successful shooter on the market, was to have been available on consoles as well. I see this as the only viable way to revive the franchise... with cross-play! Console players have never gotten a 'great' Tribes game, and the console FPS market is huge.
The original aesthetic, drawing heavily on "space feudal pseudo-medieval" themes and beautiful art in the same vane, is wonderful (and was diluted by modern military meets cyber anime themes in Ascend). Focus on those aesthetics, finely crafted, with a solid gameplay loop (already perfected in Tribes 2), and you have a great start. Couple it with content updates and cosmetics, and you have longevity in the market today. Maybe even have a battle royale mode and/or some TF2-Overwatch team battle arena modes, as well as classic Tribes gameplay modes and classic arena shooter modes. I think that would make everyone happy. Shoot... I would even go so far as to say it needs a campaign mode, single player, but with a focus on playing it co-op like looter-shooters/Borderlands etc.
Though I must say, Titanfall games scratched a lot of my Tribes itches, and even some of the older Starsiege (the universe Tribes is in) itches in the form of mech combat.

I really wish you focused more on the first science lab in Xen. When you enter, you see some HEV suit cassets in flickering light, some are empty, and you can hear a subtle sound which was accompanying you almost the whole game - a suit voice. Except it's... malfunctioning? As you step in, wondering if there are any fellow scientists survived in these harsh conditions, you realise the source of the sound. It's a headcrab, penetrated through one of the crew's helmet, and now you are being attacked by another variety of zombie.

The rocket launch doesn't fail, or at least not entirely. After you launch the rocket, certain types of enemies stop appearing on Earth, namely Headcrabs, Bullsquids, and Houndeyes. These are also the first enemies that appear in the game, and from start to finish, they appear to teleport in completely randomly. But the Vortigaunts, the alien grunts, the bigger and more intelligent enemies remain, and their teleportation has never seemed random: they love to ambush both the military and you, often teleporting in at the exact right moment to try and catch people off-guard.
So you can take from this that the initial aliens that show up after the Resonance Cascade are there by accident, but the Nihilanth is deliberately sending later enemies in at strategic points. Whatever was on the rocket was successful in stopping the accidental teleportation of the Resonance Cascade, but only going to Xen and stopping the Nihilanth will prevent its deliberate teleportations.
Leadhead goes into this more in her video, "What even happened in Half-Life 1?" which is a really good watch. Hell, all of her Half-Life content comes highly recommended.

Many modern games (that don't do motion capture) have absolutely terrible facial animation and lip syncing but HL2 not only has amazing facial animation but the lip syncing is determined programmatically based on the sounds being spoken and thus it basically automatically works when moved to a different language.

It's largely a matter of need and design. I love intrinsic AI, but players tend not to notice it anywhere near as much as you think. FEAR AI isn't actually incredibly deep for example, and most people think HL2 has terrible AI when it actually has insanely deep AI logic that goes well beyond what the AI in HL1 had. The difference is that the FEAR AI talked *a lot* and did a few other things to trick the player into thinking the AI was way smarter than it is, and in HL2's case while the AI was incredibly deep, it was really inaccurate at shooting to make things easier for the player and often fought in locations that didn't play to their strengths.
The reason I'm saying this is because most players think they want insanely good AI, but then hate the game when they feel like it's 'unfair' since most games need a massive crutch for the player to actually perform at a decent level. Most games don't bother with really deep AI because it goes unnoticed despite taking a lot of work and also opens up a massive grey area for balance since it's much harder to account for your AI the deeper it goes. For 90% of games, they don't need really deep AI as long as they throw in enough AI barks to give an appearance of intelligence.
Don't get me wrong it's a shame I love my crazy AI but it's not as simple as "modern games dont know AI dumb" or anything.

    • @gratuitouslurking8610
      @gratuitouslurking8610 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

@@LonelyKnightess There's also the cases where the AI in it's smartness requires more needs and requirements to function for things you never thought of either. Perfect example is why retail TES: Oblivion's AI is seemingly as dumb as the NPCs are potato. They actually had the schedule system working where NPCs would seek out needs and wants, but the problem came when they could no longer due this legaly, what with running out of gold to do so relatively quickly. This would lead to attempts to steal, and the AI was never given a way to interact with the guards to just be taken to jail or similar. A few dozen dead NPCs later and you'd basically be stuck with a ghost town. A few of these characters are still around with the advanced AI packages but most were cut back to very simplified schedules and the word-salad conversation system we all know and joke at today.

Half-Life uses Vert- FOV scaling instead of Hor+, which means that instead of expanding the horizontal FOV when switching from 4:3 aspect ratio to widescreen, the game shrinks the vertical FOV. You can fix this by using the *default_fov* console command, but from his gameplay footage, I could tell that he didn't do that. At 16:9 widescreen, his horizontal FOV should have been at least 106°, but he was still only playing at 90°.

I think the fact Xen starts with a full on (albeit very short) cutscene of Gordon seeing visions of alien stuff and then his hands gives even more credence to the “this world follows different rules”. Half Life has always been build around an unbroken first person perspective. No third person cutscenes (barely any cutscenes), no loading screens (just loading zones). I really loved the reimagining of Xen. It took something so rather lackluster, and turned it into one of my favorite moments in a game, from getting up from the teleporter all the way to the end, it was a rush of curiosity of the unknown. The music just brings it to life even more. The color palette is so vibrant compared to anything else from the game and it really felt like I was somewhere I shouldn't be, and the setpieces felt so grand.

Fantastic review and analysis. The only thing you'd really passed over that I wish had been discussed is the lengths Crowbar Collective went to to make everyone feel real during the invasion, and the ways they introduced little character arcs ("we can still climb" and "jackson, how many lives do you have?" come to mind) to all the security guards and scientists who were just uncanny clones in the original.
    But ye, sub earned.
#EDIT: Okay so one more thing I do wish had been touched on was the distinct appearance of the Xenian technology between the Crystal Room™ and the Interloper chapter, being intended to bridge the gap between the original game and Half-Life 2 in much the same way as the musical score. But ye, great video nonetheless!

Honestly, while I agree with most of this video, I was actually quite disappointed that the teleportation attack was removed from the nihilanth fight when I played through it.
While I understand the point of it harming the flow of the fight, I really liked the teleportation attack in the sense that it sort of hints that the nihilanth is actually terrified of you. It's a desperate creature clinging onto any chance for survival, even trying to just teleport you away to delay the inevitable.
By the time you've reached the nihilanth, you have become an absolute MONSTER, capable of surviving all odds, and the nihilanth knows this.

    • @tTaseric
      @tTaseric 2 ปีที่แล้ว +42

I think the desperation is actually even more pronounced in Black Mesa.
The way he just grabs random things from Earth to throw at you feels just like how someone might flail around when attacked to just find an object to use as a weapon or push the attacker off.
Him using his portals to teleport you away feels like a genuine strategy that he's using to prolong the inevitable, but the way he just unleashes everything he can at you in one final attempt to just stop you ultimately feels more desperate to me.

That fight you showed using sexy nutella's footage is my favorite moment of the game.
You got your doughy coworkers with you and then boom! you're locked into combat and when you finish redecorating the walls with america's finest your people finally get in and they're just in shock and horror at the carnage Gordon has just unleashed.
Like they never expected him to be capable of coldly and brutally slaughtering the soldiers even in self defense, but he did. Gordon is slowly becoming something of a beast in his fight to stay alive and that's the moment that we, the player, step back and really look at what it is we've been doing. Cutting down soldiers and alien wildlife with equal ferocity because we must. Never giving thought to the broader reach of our actions.
These men had families, they had lives and sure, they're a bunch of gung ho murder-happy guys who seem to enjoy killing scientists a bit too much but they were still fellow human beings and here you are butchering them wholesale.
And then with all this in mind you're confronted by more soldiers who stand in your way that you must cut down en masse to get to the Lambda team.
Or, you know, you can just disregard it in favor of "when I shoot the guns death comes out! Wheeeee!"

The music is more epic (especially in Xen) The scientists express more emotions when the catastrophe occurs, we can see in detail how they enslave the vortigaunts, Freeman begins to hear voices when he is about to enter the Nihilant portal (I guess he is remembering everything he went through) and the elevator part before the final fight gave me intense feelings.
In conclusion, in my opinion, Half-Life is like an action movie, while Black Mesa is like an emotional one.

Funnily enough you could hear voices from the nihilanth portal in HL1 too, Crowbar Collective just picked up on that detail too

I think the voices are actually the scientists back on Earth talking to you through a portal. You also hear them before the Gonarch fight, saying things like "Oh, no... he's approaching her lair! Freeman, get out of there!"

I have friends in their 30s who play games all the time, and have no interest or time for Half-life, I have no idea why they never got into it or how they missed the whole franchise. This video is such a great sales pitch for why not only the original, but Black Mesa is one of the best games ever made, and I will share it with everyone who says otherwise! Great video.

I think most of us grew up as either pc or console gamers, not both. While HL1 was also on console, PS1 really wasn't great for shooters and its controls felt unintuitive.
That is, if they even grew up as gamers. The '10s really were a revolution in bringing gaming to people who didn't consider themselves nerds.

@@NieroshaiTheSable I grew up originally on PC games as a kid (mostly tycoon games and kids games), then only played consoles when I was a preteen to graduating high school. After my first semester in college is around the time I got into modern PC gaming because I had purchased a powerful gaming laptop. It felt great to finally play games like Half Life/Black Mesa. It’s truly one of those games everyone should not miss out on. Glad I did not!

I love videos like this where you can just FEEL how much the video creator loves the topic they're talking about. I need more of these.
As for Black Mesa, I doubt it'd happen but if the team would also recreate Opposing Force and Blue Shift, I would gladly eat that shit up.

THANK YOU. Thank you for shining a spotlight this masterpiece, with such a well edited and well thought-out analysis.
It's completely unbelievable that this was made by a bunch of fans. It's better than anything Valve or any other big developer has made in the last like 10 years. Valve should be on their knees, begging to hire and throw money at the Crowbar Collective.
Side note: Slightly sad you didn't include the Xen elevator part in the sound design chapter. It's arguably the best showcase of how the music compliments the gameplay. Also omitting my favourite track "Ascension", which is AAA summer blockbuster levels of incredible.

Valve made Half Life Alyx in the past 10 years, which is better than Black Mesa.
Black Mesa is really, really good too though.

Lets not downplay Valve too hard here, i mean they still have Alyx like the other commenter said but this isn't changing the fact that Black Mesa is an absolute MASTERPIECE.

I first played a version of Black Mesa in 2014. I finally beat the Nihilanth yesterday. The whole thing was worth the wait. :)
I see this not even as a remake of Half-Life, but a retelling of the same story. This really is its own game. And I agree, it's one of the best I've played.

    • @Zack_Wester
      @Zack_Wester 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

the thing whit the ladder was that there was boxes on the ladder where pressing E would put you on the floor.
problem is that the players perspective of where the box was vs where it actually was it made sense if you played in 3 person and could see the player model.
      they did not match up.
so the player was ether further upp on the ladder or further down on the ladder and those not in the box that signaled the game to put the player on the floor but just drooped them straight down whit a small force push away from the ladder meaning you could not get back on the ladder.
you can easly notis this if you play some costum HL2 maps where the ladder don't have those floor level boxes.

This is officially one of the best, most well made analysis videos I’ve seen on TH-cam. It’s clear to see the amount of care and love that was put into all the explanations and comparisons. And taking the extra mile to fully understand all the little details in this beautiful game is something I wish all content creators would do. You’ve earned a new sub and I look forward to more content like this in the future.
