  • Making the Eagle is at 5:35. This is my attempt at mastering the HO Scale, "Old Growth" model tree with a miniature eagle. I don't believe I mastered it, but I came close to satisfaction.

Very well thought out and executed. You've showed me and others just how rewarding building a scene to display a person's pride & joys. In my humble opinion, the big layout guys missed the concept totally. Being able to see what you've bought in it's own miniature world just really stands out in my mind anyhow. To each his own as you've said and I agree with this also, but man, this up-close and personable stuff really shows how fun this railroading can be without having an 80ft by 80ft basement or garage to wheel a six engine 100 cars freight around and around. Switching is my thing along with snapping photos along the way when I'm deep down in the well of Switching. As always Boomer, glad your here yelling from way up front to us way back here in back of the train on how to keeper on the track of excellence

@@lessismore8035 Thanks for sharing. This small shelf layout feels huge. It seems like there is always some spot to explore. The shelf layout genre is a radical shift from the larger traditional layout in which many never see the light of day, or get close. They become a burden and source of anxiety.
It's a pure joy to work on River Road - all twenty six feet of it. Then I go back and make another detail pass taking it to another level. and finding little scenes I completely forgot about that open up even more opportunities. It ends up being a clinic and a place where you would not mind living. ;-)😁

Really nice background music. Nice to meet a model railroader with some culture. I grew up playing the violin. The Beach Boys, Beatles, and Aerosmith have their place, but then so does Mozart, Ravel, and Bach, (but not Schoenberg). Both my parents were professional musicians (flute and harp), and I currently build harps as a profession (also retired USAF--where I worked closely with CAF officers in my first assignment at McChord back in 1981. Love your modeling. I model in "Finescale S." Standard and Narrow Gauge. I love your strong focus on high-realism. Yummm.

Two of my brothers are talented musicians. I couldn't play G chord on the guitar or do a drum roll. I only learned how to play "Red River Valley" on the harp until my brother took it from me and wailed a tune which ended my music career . . . lol.
Subsequently, I promptly I took up sculpting and painting as a kid and made my living as a part time artist. I grew up building models and never grew tired of it once I decided to scratch build everything out of sheer boredom. ;-)
Thanks for taking the time to share. Cheers.

Thanks again for sharing your skills. I agree, sparse is better and I will have to try the wire branches. One of the club members gave me a box of used 24" x 3/4" butt, cedar shakes and I find that split they make great armatures, easy to shape. The problem I have is openness in the canopy, but the wire branches might be the answer. I finish the roots using a hot gun. You can string out the roots and use a heat gun to soften them when installing the tree on a hillside or over a rock. Height is something I also agree with you about. I made my birds of prey using round toothpicks, when wet I can shape the beak and body, then flair out the tail, fill out with cheap drywall mud(time setting 30-90 min) or heavy Gesso. Enjoy watching and learning, keep it going.

I've always disliked how short model trees are. Most of the time they're barely taller than the train. It has always looked odd and out of scale to me. I always told myself that I would have accurate height trees on my layout. I understand that the trains are supposed to be the star of the show but it just seems wrong to shrink everything else to allow the train to stand out more. With this series of videos about trees you've hit home with me and nailed something that I've always pondered about. Like I said before I've got an obsession with trees having a playlist on my channel with over 130 videos on different ways to make trees from different modelers. Great video. Thanks for stimulating my obsession and giving me more videos to add to the list. The three sisters trees are perfect, with just thinning out the number of large limbs; to represent the old growth longleaf pine trees that were on the railroad through the southeastern United States that I'm wanting to model. Very awesome, easy technique. Stay well. -Wil 👍

Boomer, the transition from the road to the backdrop photo is absolutely awesome. Even though the angle of the road towards the backdrop is at (almost) 90°, you show this transition will work from more than just one angle. This, although I think an angled positioning of the road towards the 2D representation will in most cases further enhance the field of depth. That’s where the layman should start with, to comprehend the sometimes awkward combining of perspective lines, from 3D to 2D.
On the eagle and tree building; so great to see how you use the Golden Fiber Paste to sculpt the scene.
Watching your videos definitely helped me improve my modeling. Of course, I too have my preferred methods, but I seriously adjusted them to achieve those more subtle effects. Find that your ‘teachings’ also add to the meditative aspect of modeling. It allows for more stages to reflect on the progress, rather than pushing for the end result.
