- A lack of homemaking skills can cost you a lot of money when you do your grocery shopping. The best way to save money and build your home economy is to learn skills in the kitchen that will help you make the products your family consumes. This mindset and way of life puts you the drivers seat of your families health and wealth. Being frugal as a homemaker requires you to be skilled hence I share some that I have learnt with the intention of motivating you to do the same for your household.
Here are the recipes I share in the video:
Granola ingredients:
4 cups of oats
1 cup nuts/ raisins/seeds of your choice
1/2 cup coconut oil
1/2 cup honey/maple syrup
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon salt
Method
Mix all the ingredients in a bowl and mix through until well combined.
Line a baking sheet and pour out mixture.
Bake in a pre-heated oven 180 degrees for until golden.
Stir and turn granola every minute or two to avoid burning.
Wait for it to cool before putting in a airtight container.
No Knead sandwich bread
Dry Ingredients:
5 cups all purpose flour
1 packet yeast
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup brown sugar
Mix all the dry ingredients and make a well in the center.
Wet ingredients:
1 cup warm milk
1 and 1/2 cup of warm water
100g Melted butter
Mix wet with dry ingredients until well incorporated.
Cover with tea towel for 10 min.
Stretch and fold dough and cover with wet tea towel to proof for 30 minutes.
Divide dough in two and shape into bread and place in buttered loaf pan.
Cover to proof until it has doubled in size.
Baked in preheated oven for 30 minutes.
Butter the top of your bread once done and enjoy.
Strawberry Jam
Ingredients:
1 medium lemon
2 punnets of strawberries sliced
cover strawberries with sugar( I used 13 tablespoons of brown sugar)
Method:
Cook down the strawberries with the sugar and lemon.
Continue stirring and mash strawberries if chunky for a smooth texture.
Once jam has thickened remove the foam.
Transfer into sterilised jam jars and enjoy.
Fridge Pickles
Ingredients:
Cucumbers
1 cup vinegar
1 tablespoon salt
1 tablespoon sugar
1 water
Method:
Slice cucumbers and add into a jar.
Make a brine, add vinegar, water, sugar and salt in a pot.
Bring to a simmer until sugar and salt is dissolved.
Remove from the stove to allow brine to cool down.
Once cooled add to your jar of pickles and store in the fridge at least for 36 hours before consumption.
Yrs ago, the older women would teach the younger women skills. At some point, knowledge stopped being passed down. Thank you for your content!!❤
True! We need to revive the wisdom of our grandmothers.
I think people stopped learning skills when society pushed for college education. I think children didn’t want to lean anymore because we thought college was the way to make money and pay someone else to do your work.
@@KYLAMENEFEE-i9h True. I was encouraged to pursue college as that was where money and opportunities were. Now, I'm eagerly seeking to learn many things I overlooked. I don't think people stopped teaching; we didn't listen.
@@TruePowerMinistries Some grandmother's didn't pursue education,😢.That is not the life most of would have signed up for.
@@KYLAMENEFEE-i9hMany women don't want to be in the kitchen like you and that is the choice education afforded us
I’m so excited to see a Black, African woman making videos like these
Thank you so much for your support! I'm honored to be a resource for you. 😊
Refilwe, when you cut off the strawberry tops, put them in a dehydrator or air dry them. Combined with dried basil, they make a fantastic tea!
Wow that’s a great tip, I’ll have to try that! Thank you
I've added spicy globs Basil to a tea mix once and it was lovely, strawberry tops might make their way into the next batch
You guys are gold. For the first time in my life I wanna make friends😂(introvert)
@
AWWW - what a beautiful compliment❣❣
I'm an omnivert: I do well in public spaces, can be the life of a party, but it drains me like crazy. Me, myself, and I are usually enough to make for wonderful conversations and I can always trust that myself is doing her very best to not let me or others down 🥰😉🤗
There is nothing wrong with being picky about choosing friends and you don't have to have a lot of them. The ones who will become your true friends will understand your needs and help you become the best version of yourself!
Sending you love from afar 💖💌
@andreamortimer2610 I appreciate you friend from afar haha ❤️
A refreshingly new approach on household videos. Thank you! You don't have to be a tradwife or influencer to make great, informative, and close-to-life videos. Actually, amongst all these videos I've watched over the years you are the first housewife who prefers using a microwave cover to using chemicals or food to clean the appliance. I will definitely follow you. Greetings from Germany ❤
Thank you, truly appreciate your feedback.
I recently made my own jams, almond milk and peanut butter. My next skill I wish to learn is bread making. Great video.
It is such a rewarding feeling to make things from scratch and know exactly what's in them, right?
I enjoy bread making! It’s fun to do. I have been interested in making jams and almond milk. Are there any specific resources that you used to learn how to make jams? I am familiar with how people make almond milk.
@@jalynnwilliams6170 jam is fairly simple. If you buy packets of pectin most come with recipes that have directions and tips on how to make different types of jams and jelly 😊
Speaking from experience, bread was the most intimidating thing to make at home but once I gave it a try, I learned it was so easy and it really shifted my worldview that I'm capable of so many things!
It’s so empowering isn’t it, once you start making food from scratch you start gaining the confidence to explore new things.
01:30 Always measure any oils before the honey- that way the honey will slide right out of the measuring cup. Thanks for sharing this recipe with us!
Thanks for the tip!
That’s so smart!💐
I've found a community of smart women❤❤❤😢
My heart is melting just at the intro itself because I always wanted to hang with someone that had grandma skills, what I call it anyway. I remember wanting to learn so much even in a high school, but I’d love to apply it to my lifestyle now. I’m here for the first time and I want to say thank you
It's a blessing to connect with you. I'm happy to share what I've learned!
I just want to say THANK YOU, I'm only 9 min on this video and I'm loving everything. I will be making big changes... Don't stop, you are helping many ppl...
Thank you for the encouragement. Let's continue growing, go ahead and make those positive changes. Cheering you on...
Restoring the home economy 👏🏾 I love to see women at home in our element 😍🙌🏾 Great video!
Thank you. Home is our domain♥
As someone planning to create homemaking and farm life content, I love this type of content. Like WOW and the fact that you are my neighbor, I'm in Botswana 😂 and you're a Christian. Ticks all the boxes ❤ definitely subscribing
Definitely cut from the same cloth, farm life is my ideal. Thank you for being part of the tribe, I'm super excited. Cheering you on sis, looking forward to your content.
🎉
I love seeing such content from my African sisters, I follow a lot of Americans with such a lifestyle ❤
You're a breath of fresh air, ma'am. Please continue making such wholesome content 🙏🏿
Family values...
You are most welcome, my desire is to inspire and encourage others to prioritize their families.
Me subscribing 8min into this video because I literally been making my way into Homemaking since I turned 30 and my son had a lot of food allergies so I had to learn to make a lot of things from home. I mean you are so right, once you start making your own bread you start hating store bought bread. My husband nolonger wants store bought bread. We make our own tortilla wraps as well. Lady you are God sent!!!
It’s so rewarding to create your own, isn’t it? Glad you joined the community!
I make my own bread too. I used to do the egg wash but the remaining egg would always go to waste. Now I just cover the hot bread with a wet tea towel once it’s out of the oven and the steam makes it super soft. I would like to start freezing the peppers, in fact I bought a pack coz it was super cheap and don’t know what to do with it so now I will make chop and freeze. I will also try making mayonnaise. Thanks so much for these ideas x sending love from Australia 🇦🇺
Wow, your tip about the wet tea towel is amazing! I am going to try that, thanks.
I am a working mom of five and a wife. I'm so glad and thankful I found this video. Where have you been all my life?
Glad we finally crossed paths sis, welcome aboard.
Hello Refilwe
I just wanted to let you know that the title of your video instantly captured my attention. I've been making homemade brown bread since childhood to the point where I've stopped eating pre-packaged bread all together. And as I've gotten older and started to become more health conscious, I wanted to extend the mindset of "homemaking" to other types of food that I regularly eat.
The practice of making and consuming food from our local gardens is of paramount importance today then it's ever been when our parents grew up. This is because industrialization is at its peak right now and it's evident in the way that companies blatantly choose to prioritize profit over people. Our well-being will continue to deteriorate until we start having urgency in our health and the environment. Which is why I strongly advocate for communal living and preserving indigenous knowledge and skills.
I appreciate you sharing the good message to the world. You have my full support 🙏🏾
Oh how I appreciate you -- your mindset! You are spot on, gardening is a necessity considering the attack on our health. Being skilled homemakers is a great blessing to our families.
As a new wife! I want to make it my goal to live below budget and make our home ❤️❤️
Beautiful video! Thank you ❤️❤️
I’m 22 years in. This will make your marriage much easier. My you have many, many happy years!
Blessings to you my babe! The Lord will carry you. Meditate on Proverbs 31, the Lord will give you the wisdom and strength
This is the first video, the Lord led me to. And it answered so many of my questions and concerns. I love how you teach what home economy is. I've been wondering how does what link to the home and how can I use it, I don't want to loose what I learnt. Secondly I was concerned about how much jam is costly as well as bread but honestly the granola just won me over. As I love granola ❤. I had so much peace watching your video and when I concentrate I honestly sensed the presence of God. I was like Hagar in the desert with my baby but God opened my eyes. You started with something that I love, made something that I am fearful will flop and ended with me gaining hope I can make the strawberry jam. And it's so strange, I kept telling myself I really love strawberry jam but can be costly. You don't understand that I feel like God personalised your videos for me. He is so personal and so international.
Can't wait for the mozzarella 😊 video. If you have made it already, please point me towards the right direction.
Wow God is intentional indeed. This is heart warming. Will be doing a part 2 where I will share the mozzarella recipe soon.
At last something South African !!!
😆😅I know right? Felt the same way at some point.
I'm a soon to be bride with next to no homemaking skills, especially in the kitchen... I can make a sandwich and that's about it! So glad I found your channel. Subscribed and looking forward to learn so much from you!
You got this, start with the basics and you will grow in confidence! Glad to have you here.
Update: so I made granola for the first time today. My first batch got burnt luckily I used 1 cup oats because I wasn't sure how it'll turn out in terms of quantity. Was a little sad but I've seen chefs burn food so I gave it another try. Safe to say I'm in love... it tastes so delicious. I was using my price book to record prices. I'm not 100% there yet but I'm better than before. I thank God for leading me to your channel.
Thank you for the update. I'm glad you gave it a go. It is part of the learning process, granola needs you to keep a close eye on it. I also burnt mine the first time I tried out the recipe. Well done.
I just found your channel! And I love it. It’s timely with the climate we are in right now
Welcome! I’m glad you found the channel and it resonates with you.
FINALLY FOUND MY PEOPLE🎉 LOOKING FORWARD TO MORE CONTENT.
Nice sis thanks for sharing took notes.. my highlight was the bread 🍞 and strawberries 🍓 jam!
Hi Lovely. Just found your channel. I live in the UK but was born in SA. You are inspirational. Thank you for sharing. Homemaking is something dear to my heart. After almost 36yrs a homemaker, I still love it. I do make bread at least once a week. I don't use milk or butter at all. I use just the water and some olive oil after the ingredients have been mixed. So only when kneading. It's still fantastic home baked bread and even healthier.
Love the granola. I make a hybrid of British crumble and granola. Always tasty! Over the years, I have never been a recipe puritan. It's best to adapt to your own needs and preferences or you won't be motivated to do it. As long as you stick to the basic rules like with brad, flour, yeast and water and the mechanical rules, it should all be good. LOve experiments. cake flops are never flops. Add ice-cream, custard or cream and its pudding!
😁
Where were you all this time? ❤❤❤
God is soo good. This morning I was praying for what I need to do to glorify God as I want on my marriage. I'm so grateful, God bless you 😇
It's a blessing when the Lord answers prayers, keep shining His light on your marriage. Thank you
You are a rare gem! I’m here to listen and learn❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you sis, glad the content is resonating with you.
New fave channel! I am intentionally redirecting my family towards a more purposeful and wholesome living, and this is exactly the steps I intend to take! Thank you
Awesome! Thank you!
Hey sweet mama...I completely agree we need to give our family healthy nutritious food and its so much better if we make it ourselves. Thank you for this lovely inspiration! 🙏☺️
I thoroughly enjoyed watching this video. You popped up on my feed and it was such a treat to watch with breakfast. I do much of this myself…I just don’t make bread often enough. I.ll definitely visit you again.
Wow so happy to read your comment Denise. I have learned a lot from you over the years through your channel. I recently also learned from you not to throw away the cut off parts of my strawberries and make syrup. I didn't know that so thank you for being the older woman who teaches us to take care of our homes.
Greetings from America! Thank you for this amazing content. I just subscribed. I enjoy taking care of my family too. Peace and blessings to your family. 🙏🏾

I'm glad it was of value for you, all the best.
Wow,this is so interesting. This is my first encounter with your video. You're so right about giving our families especially kids the healthiest food ever because they still have a long life ahead of them. I love food with less salt, sugar, fat and sometimes it's to find in the stores. Thank you for sharing❤
Amazing bread, it looks absolutely delicious and fluffy, i think with that strawberry jam it is a dream! Great advice and wonderful recipes!
Thank you, it was definitely a good combination.
Just to help to achieve a soft crust place a bowl of water in the oven it will create steam that will prevent the crust from forming too soon which will make the crust hard
Thank you so much will do that today as I bake bread.
Oh I see you roasted the oats, I'm so glad I found this channel
Hi Refilwe, I am so glad I stumbled upon your channel today!!! You literally speak my language in as far as living a wholesome self sufficient life is concerned. I am a small TH-camr making gardening videos. I also try by all means to make sure that I grow the majority of vegetables that we use often in my home, that way we also reduce how much we buy. I see that you are well on your way to 1000 subscribers, good luck💥💥💥💥
I just subscribed 🎉🎉🎉

My fellow South African. Which province are you from?

So glad to have found this channel. All I found while looking into this topic(food preservation) were overseas channels.Glad to have someone here at home to learn from❤
I'm grateful to have you as part of the community!
Thank you for all the fantastic tips. I've recently started making bread at home and storing chicken bones and veggie scraps for broth, I also make jam at home because I enjoy making cakes. I have to admit that pickling intimidated me because of the whole sterilization process, but you have motivated me to give it a try.
I also store veggie scraps and bones🙂 Food preservation is not all that difficult but there are people online who make it seem complicated. I was also intimidated until I decided to pick up a home preservation book from the library and give it a go. I ended up improvising sum of the recipes. I am glad this video gave you motivation to give it a go.
I love making apple and carrot jam it's so good
Sounds delicious. You just gave me an urge to experiment with jams this year. Thank you
I enjoyed this!!!!
I love the idea of growing food❤. Your content is refreshing and very necessary.

My Calabrese great grandmother fed her family out of the backyard. The only thing she didn't make from scratch was bread--because my great grandfather worked in a bakery!
That is so inspiring, thank you for sharing. She really blessed her family.
Love! Home economy. You are gorgeous and beautifully dressed.
Children can help out with the home economy.
Thank you.
Ke tlo campa mo 😮😮😮😮!
I started with making homemade pickles and I had given a jar to one of my grandparent's neighbors...Another container was given to a lady whom had just lost her husband and her brother tried a batch of refrigerator pickles and loved it.
I've been making pickles since 2021(Should have done it DURING the Covid-19 Pandemic)
God bless you, love how you share what you made with those around you. Do you pickle other vegetables?
Thank you.
Thank you Rifilwe! This kinda content is awesome you're like my lovely MIL. I always say I must go stay with her for a month to learn to make jam, bake bread etc. She lives overseas though so I'll learn from you now.
You are blessed to have a MIL with such vital skills. Whenever you have the opportunity to be with her, maximise 😅. But i'm happy to stand in the gap will be doing a part 2 of the homemaking skills soon.

Finally i found my type, will be learning a lot from you Sisi. My Grandma left with a skill of preparing bread and dombolo from cratch but now ive lost the skill of making bread. it can be because i had no one to make it for and i would really love to get that skill back so i can make it for my husband. At the moment we are eating the home bread from Woolies and i need to stop doing that. Really love your contant
