Another good western with Joe McCrea and many other young western actors. I want to believe these guys all had a hoot making these westerns. Thank you for the memories!
Joel McCrea was one of my favorite actors. I like not only his acting and movies, but I also admired his personal life. He married Frances Dee three months after they met on the set of "The Silver Cord", and he died on their 57th wedding anniversary. They lived on a ranch in Ventura California avoiding the Hollywood scene, riding together often - you can see in his movies that he was an excellent rider. Their ranch is now Thousand Oaks.
Another stalwart of the western era is Joel Mccrea. He helped to keep the westerns coming to us on a regular basis. He was one of the icons throught the 40s/50s years.

Very Good movie. Good plot. Before my time, therefore he was not on my radar. Could have been a good candidate for Gunsmoke too, perhaps he was too old for that part.
That makes sense. Always wondered if there was any specific reasons he was cast in westerns so often other than the fact that he was obviously a very capable minor player. He certainly fit the part well.

Allan Dwan (Peter Bogdanovitch’s interviews: his books on legendary directors are priceless) said « movies have lost the artistic touch with the B&W films end: all the work of lightening a scene was over ». One can find this extreme but I always prefer the original version. Besides there’s a kind of magic in BW movies: our world isn’t BW so we enter another world with these BW movies, specially with films noir. I just can’t figure a colored film noir: « Pick up on south St » or « when the sidewalk ends » (and so many others) were made in and for BW.
JOEL McCRAE WAS A VERY ACTOR. TOO BAD HE NEVER ACHIEVED THE STARDOM THAT OTHER ACTORS LIKE JOHN WAYNE, KIRK DOUGLAS, RICHARD WIDNARK, BURT LANCASTER, GARY COOPER AMONG OTHERS ACHIEVED.
Two questions: 1. Why couldn't the bad guy get to Mexico once he had the fresh horse. Surely his fresh mount should have been able to pull away from the exhausted pursuit. 2. Did they actually find the stolen money?
I thought about this too. The only thing I could come up with is 1- the horse had added weight from the money and 2-being the girls horse, maybe it wasn't used to hard riding.

The “song?” that is played at the start of the movie, has got to be some of the worst music that I have ever heard. It sounds as if when the music starts to play he just kinda takes off singing random thoughts and he just sings whenever his thoughts wander along. 😬😬😬😲😲😲😖😖😖👎👎👎

I think you mean William Holden (or maybe Richard Widmark). His voice sounds more like Holden's and he's not blond like Widmark was.

Slim pickens got some roles because he was on of the few actors who could drive a team of horses and his skill riding horses.

Slim Pickens was a champion rodeo rider. He doubled for Gregory Peck in the bronc busting scene in the Big Country.
