Awww what a sweetheart she was! When she thanked Jack at the end her warmth and kindness shone through. A lady of huge talent who never lost her modesty, humility and love of humanity.
This is 2023 and I think she is absolutely wonderful her recipes make so much sense and are easy to make, she is number one I adore her videos.
I love that her main concern was taste rather than nutrition and how looks didn't have to be perfect but you can improvise with little mistakes. So optimistic. Pretty different from most hight level chefs now a days.

Truth - the best cookery books are written by genuine, unpretentious foodies, and Julia was certainly one of those, God bless her.
In the 'eighties she put the most wonderful complete cookery course on video. It's a masterclass in everything you need to know to produce good food, including meats, vegetables, potato dishes, fish/seafood, starters and desserts.
Some benevolent soul once uploaded the entire set of videos to TH-cam, and I was gripped from start to finish! Hopefully it's still here - I'm going to check now, and if it is I shall be giving myself a refresher course for 2023. There is no better teacher than Julia Child, her wisdom and her joy in good food is timeless.

What a charismatic lady, and so lovable with it. Her voice is extraordinary, so is her physical presence, she has bags of star quality! Wish we had her on British TV when I was a child.

Greg Gray she also had mad respect for Fanny Craddock, and mentioned her on one of her episodes. Julia isn’t the type to have to put someone else down to build herself up.
@@DinoSarma Agreed, Julia Child was enchanting because she genuinely liked herself and was comfortable in her own skin. And this relaxed, sense of being 'at peace' with herself made her a TV natural. That's a state of genuine confidence everyone should aspire to.
She would never have been anything but respectful to other gifted people because she was totally content and happy with herself so never felt envious or resentful. A very special lady.

She's the original and the best. Today we have reality cooking TV which is very much based on sensationalism and the dumbing down of America. They don't make 'em like Julia Child anymore.

As a child I would do my own imitation of Julia’s cooking shows in my parent’s kitchen. My family thought it was funny a 5 yo playing Julia. I didn’t think in my wildest dreams I would move to San Francisco and attend the best culinary school in CA all the while thinking about my fond memories of Julia. Still a professional chef today. Even my mentor Jeremiah Tower was in awe of her 😊

I heartily recommend the book Julia had in the pipeline that she mentions here, 'My Life in France'. It's a gripping read, all about her formative years in post-war Paris with her diplomat husband Paul, as she trained at the Corden Bleu cookery school.
France, cookery and marriage were all exciting new discoveries for her, and she devoted her energies - and life - to all three in that magical period from 1948 - '54.
Julia Child adored the French culture. She and her beloved husband Paul were like-minded soul mates with such positive energy and enthusiasm to discover new things, learn, and enjoy life. And they were very wise, for why else are we here? If you're looking for a really fun, upbeat and absorbing memoir, you won't find better!
Julia was widowed, elderly and frail when her grand nephew Alex Prud'homme interviewed her and put this magical book together (thank God he did). She died aged 91 in 2004, and the book was completed by him and published two years later, in 2006.
I only wish she had got to see this very special book. It's a labour of love by Julia and Alex. It brought that glorious time in France back to life, and the heady, early days of her cookery career and most important, her happy marriage with Paul. I'm sure she would have absolutely loved it. I'm just so glad it was written and published for others to enjoy! Heart-warming and inspirational.

Wonderful person. She worked for OSS during the war (the early CIA). A full life.
She quit smoking in her 60's after being a heavy smoker for years, and lived to be 96. My mother was born 7 years later than her and didn't make it to 80 in spite of her smoking many fewer years.
galanie she was born August 15, 1912. She passed away August 13, 2004. Do the math. She lived to be 91. Passed 2 days short of her 92nd birthday.

This lovely lady looks and sounds as though she suffered with Scheuermann's Disease of her spine and also a spinal scoliosis. My husband has the same conditions. Her spine is bent and twisted which puts pressure on her lungs, explaining the breathiness.
I was just thinking about this and was going to ask for opinions and I find your comment! She took care of herself so its hard to understand how she became so bent over. Perhaps its a part of being so tall also? Yes this does explain her breathiness. She always took walks and tried to lead a balanced life.
she was a life-long smoker and didn't stop until well into her 60s.. that didn't help her with breathing

i would say osteoporosis and COPD, she was and old lady and she smoked alot and in her younger videos she doesnt have that scoliosis spine ;) and as far as i know Scheuermann's Disease starts in a young age
She had breast cancer and mastectomy. She exercised daily and full of energy. Bravo to Chef Julia! I'm sure arthritis set in and she was over 6'2" tall. Always bending way over for years probably put much stress on her skeletal system. Would you know her looking down? Never!
A treasure! She* deserved the nations highest honor although I don't know if they gave it to her.

but that was her passion was home cooking she wanted the average housewife to learn how to make a fantastic meal and that evolved into teaching everyone.
