Dewsbury is an absolute SWAMP. It has been neglected for years. It used to be a great place and having spent virtually every weekend there growing up as my parents were born and bred there. My dad joined the RAF back in the day and never went back. Dewsbury was a vibrant and thriving place for years and especially wonderful at Christmas. The market was one of the best and people came from miles around. An absolute shame the way it is now, so sad.
A lot of market towns aren't what they used to be and that is for many reasons, such as places like White Rose Shopping Centre, more range of shops in cities like Leeds, and that a lot of people are now buying online. Part of the purpose of my video was to show that you can still get lots of things from the market and that the people there were really welcoming and friendly. I think it is up to us all to help keep these places going. Thanks for watching the video.
Kirklees council seem to spend all brass on Huddersfield, and Dewsbury might get a loose bit of change to do up a pot hole or two. If you could put a town in a scrap yard, Dewsbury would be first on the list. Although I've seen better scrap yards, great video.
Council spends is a massive problem across a lot of the North of England, and they all seem to be stretched. It’s a shame when good towns aren’t how we remember them from 30-40 years ago. There is still a good spirit on the market and hopefully the vibrancy can have a new lease of life again in the future.
It's nice to see someone making a positive video about dewsbury, it makes a change from those depressing bores who turn up with the sole intention of slagging the place off, at least you came when the market was open , those other guys always come when it's closed , you actually missed all the larger retail stores all of which are just five minutes walk from the bus station which makes it a very good place for shopping.
Thank you for your comment. Yes, I get frustrated when people only look for negatives when there is so much good in Dewsbury and many other places. My philosophy is that I'd want to feel welcome to return in future wherever I go and find even more good places to see to recommend, so I will check out the retail stores you mention and also down by Savile Town Wharf too which is very nice. Dewsbury is a lovely place and more people should visit to realise this.
I for one am not slagging Dewsbury off. I am just stating facts as they really are. I live here and it is just amazing how it has gone downhill in just the last couple of months. It used to be such a good place to live with always plenty to do and many's the time you could go on the Long Causeway and see folks having picnics.
@@allengower669 I think that’s symptomatic of a lot of northern places. There is so much still good around and people are so friendly. Still lots of reasons for people to visit and help keep our town centres alive. The food on the market was delicious. I’m definitely looking forward to returning for more soon!
You’ll see on the video that there were plenty of stalls open when I visited. There may have been more in years gone by but you could still get lots of different things and lots of nice food when I visited.
The few people who go around markets during the week have very limited spending such as pensioners. Some people want things given. Parking is a big problem. Notice all the yellow lines. Lots of parking restrictions in town centre with parking enforcement officers walking around. It's so much easier and safer to shop at supermarkets and out of town retail outlets. Local councils have for many years been starved of cash by central government and this doesn't help along with a lack of imagination.
Thank you for watching, Ronnie. Markets play such a vital part of the lives of so many people, especially those not online. Let's hope that things improve socially and through the authorities to support market shopping and this important social outlet too.
Thanks for watching the video, Eric. I hope you enjoyed it. Yes, it was early on a Saturday morning when I arrived and the numbers increased certainly at the market as the morning went on, but unfortunately not enough people go to some smaller market towns (same as my home town Pontefract too) as they'd rather go to the larger cities or out of town retail parks. I hope I have managed to portray there are still sufficient reasons to visit smaller towns at least once in a while and to support them as they have a lot to offer still.
Sadly, I stopped going in 2017, when my last reason for going had gone. I remember the 80’s, when it took ages to get round the market because you simply couldn’t move!
Oh dear. You sound troubled. I enjoyed my trip to Dewsbury, met some lovely people, and was good to see the history there. The food available at the market alone was worth the visit.

Kirklees Council spends its budget on paying benefits to far too many people who don’t pay anything in.

Liked etc
On the market now you will be lucky to see a dozen stalls occupied.

It truly is heaven.
If you’re looking for a large range of food products then it really is. The smells and delights on the market were great. 👍

I have noticed the lack of people ?

You didn't go to Cosmic toys or Greenwood's. The only reason to visit.
I shall certainly look out for those next time I go there. Good to hear recommendations of places to go to. Thank you.
He's trying so hard to lie about the place it's finnished gone
