    LYRICS
Who’s gonna care for the ones who care for the ones who went to war?
Landmines in the living room eggshells on the floor
I lost myself in the shadow of your honor and your pain
You stare out the window as our dreams go down the drain
Invisible, the war after the war
I get no basic training I get no purple heart
I’m supposed to carry on I can’t fall apart
People look at you and thank you for the sacrifice you made
They look at me and smile and say I’m lucky you’re ok
Invisible, the war after the war
I’m a soldier too just like you
    Serving something bigger than myself
I serve unseen, caught in between
My pain the pain of someone else
I’m stronger than you think I am, I’m right here by your side
I am not your enemy I don’t want to fight
There’s no going back in time I know you’re not the same
But you are not the only one for whom the world has changed
Invisible, the war after the war
Invisible, the war after the war

Ms Gauthie, I come from a large Catholic Family. One of my last numerous Aunts died a cpl of yeas ago. She was a devout Catholic. She left me her Rosary, Old & Worn. She told me this " Johnny, I wore those beads out praying for you to make it back home. " She went on to say " And now Johnny, I pray my Rosary that you will survive coming home." TY! Sgt JJ Miller, USMC, Decorated, VN combat vet.

That's so beautiful! Thank you for sharing that. I hope Mary sees this, she'd probably love to see a photo of that lovely Rosary.
I don't wear my mother's wedding ring, but I take it out and hold it sometimes, and think of how beautiful the patina is after 40 years of her wearing it, and the love it represented. I was lucky to be raised by two people who loved each other for 4 decades, until death did they part (but not for long).
I'm so glad you came home, and thank you for your service! Yes, coming home can be the hardest thing. My cousin had identical twin boys, both proudly joined the Marines right out of HS. One came back and enjoying a career as a music minister, the other came back with PTSD from what he experienced in Iraq. He was severely depressed, put on a waiting list to "see someone" at the VA, but he died by suicide when months went by and that help never came.

In the late 70's I was in a group of Vietnam Vets and our Wives when one of the wives screamed out her pain -- " I know you lived through it -- but now I live with it "

Your a very special artist. I have had to meet you and exchange a few words with you twice in Louisville, Ky and once in Nashville it was an honor all three times. Made it back but the real battle started coming home. From having a lovely young lady spitting in my face. The 25 years it took to finically we come is home. It was a real war even now thank you so much for seeing the war we’ve fought in Mam and then in the US. Your understanding of what we have been through mean more than all the medals and parades could ever mean. Thank you more than I could hope to put into words.

I worked with veterans of Vietnam, Beirut, the Gulf War, and Iraq and Afghanistan, and this song appreciates their wives, the ones brave enough to stay. It's wonderful.

In a perspective I hadn't thought about. I went to my wife of 37 years and apologized for the pain I haves caused her through the years. I was medically discharged after 22 years of service. Still at times have to battle demons I haven't made peace with. Thank you Mary.

I only discovered this song - and thus, this artist with a concience! - this morning, via NPR Morning Edition, wherein Malcolm Gladwell named this his current favorite song/2018 favorite song.
Malcolm Gladwell is another artist with a conscience!
(All too rare now in our supposed civil and political "leaders", and about 1/3 of our fellow American Citizens, sadly).
I may not agree with everything Mr. Gladwell writes and says, but he's brilliant, makes me think about important Issues in a different way than I might otherwise consider, (which I love to do)! 😀

Thank you Mary for the haunting and beautiful music you have shared. Music that tells stories from soldiers and stories that the rest of us need to hear. My son was in the United States Air Force and KIA in Afghanistan on the 5th of October 2010. Ever since that day I have been finding comfort and healing in music. I'm so thankful to have found you! It was just by chance. I was listening to Heartland Radio that plays mostly Americana and this song came on. I am acutely aware of anything to do with wars and soldiers, so I stopped what I was doing immediately and looked you up on TH-cam. This song though talking about someone living with a returning Vet, resonates with me too. For my family there will always be the war after the war, we are also invisible soldiers waging war with grief and loss and tragedy. Thank you for sharing and giving soldiers a voice to tell their stories.

Grew up a military brat-20 years. He didn’t know we weren’t soldiers. Father was sorry he had children-said so himself. Basically killed his only son’s spirit with a thousand cuts of cruelty. It was so sad to be one of the observers and part of the fallout (think literally, as in nuclear, also). Eventually I had to raise myself to become what I wanted to be, not what I was wanted to be. You never overcome learning not to make friends, just leave and go on, due to so many transfers and 13 or 14 schools. Have lived in 5 active war zones. The first I was 6-8, wore dog tag like soldiers, it had name and blood type on it. Yah, we knew it was a war zone, too much evidence even without any bombs I knew of. I suppose it was experiencing that war that prepared my not to fear the 4 that came much later in life. There were bombs in those, though not close to me. Soldiers, please love you children.☹️🥰

"There's landmines in the living room, and eggshells on the floor"
Leave it to Mary to describe my 15 years of living with a violent alcoholic *perfectly* in only a dozen words or less.
Yes, I know that's not what the song is about, but Mary's songs have a way of encompassing a lot of painful scenarios, and then gently she leads us to a place of healing. My ex lived this, his father was a monster and blamed his abusiveness to the wife and kids on the War. He used those same tactics on me, he wouldn't hit me if I wasn't always "pissing him off".
My dad joined the army in WWII also, but he never saw a battleground. He was in Hawaii installing radar in subs, a year after Pearl Harbor though. No PTSD from that.

    • @maddenwing1
      @maddenwing1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Alcoholism is war! Couple that with violent alcoholism and rage, trauma and destruction occur. I turned 32 today, and I have 10 months sober from anything, September 2 last year was my last drink. I've come to firmly believe, alcoholics, violent alcoholics especially live a life of that similar kind of trauma that can be considered a type of PTSD. In the mind manifests this kind of uncertainty and confusion that causes outburst and for those around, it's scary. I read your comment and couldn't help but relate. 15 years of living with a violent alcoholic too, only now, he's not drunk tonight.

Nice! Great project, very moving, and perfect poetic lyrics.
The music on this song reminds me
of The Band, in the Basement Tapes era.
Very tasteful, and poignant, and delicious.

Thank you so much for your service to all who served and for having my back before my military days and after I transferred out. I think many of us have toxic situations from time to time either due to what we experienced, for others who would never understand what we went through, when the fireworks flashed in the sky for so many to enjoy but those flashes and booms were more than we could stand or maybe it was due to the time we spent in mind. My heart is with all of my brothers and sisters. I was blessed in so many ways since my journey down that narrow lane. If it wasn't for my higher power, I don't know how I would have made it. Now, that fine soldier who I met in Germany and married there, I have laid in the ground as well as my 2nd hubby; loving both but differently. May God gives us Grace and Mercy abundantly for the rest of our journey in life as we meet other fellow soldiers; as we will be a "Soldier" for an eternity.

I'm sure I'm not alone in saying, I'd like to know more - anything you'd be comfortable sharing now.
Thanks for your service and sacrifice to and for me, and for those I love...
As well as for our democratic values.
I respect you and appreciate the sacrifices your Family and Friends have and continue to make.
I hope you are doing better this year than last. Remember, progress, NOT perfection! And, that road of progress will be bumpy and include setbacks. As long as you can pick yourself up - with the help of your Support Network/Circle, when necessary, (and it usually is necessary that we lean on others IF we want to succeed in life at ANYTHING)😉...
If you pick yourself up and keep going forward overall, that's both success and something that will make your loved ones both grateful and your relationships ever-improving.
      Best wishes!
      Regards and Gratitude,
      Suzanne

When he got out he bought a home, had two gorgeous children, and commited suicide. I remember her telling me a few times how she, "hated his tears." So while by beautiful, brave nephew lays in his grave, she gets to play the grieving widow. Within two months of his passing, she was already on facebook showing off her newly painted nails, with no mention of him. Now she has plugged into all the widows benefit programs and groups, so now she really plays up the grieving widow. Those Eastern Block women are cold pieces of work. Women, please do not make the war about you. IT is the brave men and women who serve, while you get to stay in the comfort of your home. If you don't know how your loved one suffers, at least learn to accept what you don't understand, and love them in spite of it all. His mother really suffered, she cried so violently after his suicide, her doctor told her she damaged her heart. I don't now exactly how, but she died shortly after her son. May they rest in God's peace now.

I remember my high school history teacher commenting that in the end "no one wins a war".

She's a more contemporary singer songwriter
in the alt/new folk genre. Worth checking out.
This song is from a recent album she did
in a collaboration with Iraq War Vets. She took
their writings, and collaborated on putting their
      lyrics to music.

I promise it was worse for the person who witnessed those tragedies in actual war. This song is bad.

Nobody disagrees with you. But the hurt goes beyond the soldiers. That's what this song is about.
