    I find those magnetic drawing boards you had as a kid crazy handy, you do not waste any ink since there is none involved and you can easily erase everything.
    What is crazy weird to me is that nobody seem to have ever made an "adult" version of this concept, in my opinion it would be so handy for leaving notes etc

    • @NERDfirst
      @NERDfirst  6 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Hello and thank you for your comment! I think these LCD boards are the answer to that! I've always found the magnetic based ones to be pretty "low resolution" so that might be why that hasn't really progressed into an "adult technology". Or maybe people felt the whole "swipe to clear" action gave off a very toy-like impression...

    • @Xilog
      @Xilog 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I mean it might be a bit more expensive but cover a whole plastic sheet in ferric magnet and make "press to clear" or use a neodymium magnet and a thin tip for a high resolution tablet

      @@NERDfirst Eco-friendly? How is mass-producing a plastic gadget with an LCD-screen that needs a battery (only to erase, but still) an eco-friendly alternative to paper which comes from a renewable resource and which can be recycled at a low cost (contrary to plastic or chemicals (batteries))? Are you unaware of how people tend to treat these kind of gadgets? They become garbage. Wrong message, dude.

      Hello and thank you for your comment! Yes, I should have clarified that when I say "eco-friendly" I'm referring to in my particular use case. I certainly wouldn't know enough to say anything about the manufacturing process!
      I use the board in a classroom with a document camera, and if I used sheets of paper instead, I would probably have gone through an entire ream in a semester! Seems extremely wasteful, using paper in a one-off manner like that.
      So while I can't say if it's actually overall more eco-friendly in an absolute sense, at least it significantly reduces wastage for me.

We hear each other just fine but out of towners are quick to notice our horrible habit we've developed. Thanks a bunch for the review. I actually bought 8 of the cheapo tablets (they cost me SGD 13 each) back in 2018 because there was no way I was paying SGD 99 for a Boogie Board. However, the cheapo boards were very dim, couldn't support the stylus as a kickstand, used uncommon CR2020 battery, sucked the battery life when not in use, and intermittently self-erased. However, just a few days ago, the Boogie Board Jot (an updated model) went on a deep "Black Friday" sale for SGD 21 here in Canada. Bought 7 of them and haven't looked back. At SGD 21, the Boogie Board Jot is leagues above the cheapo tablet. It's constructed better, the lines are brighter and thicker, there's stylus kickstand support, and uses more the common CR2016 battery. It's a much more appropriate price.

    • @NERDfirst
      @NERDfirst  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hello and thank you for your comment! Putting the tablets directly under the light source would create a huge glare as the surface of the tablet is somewhat glossy.
      From my testing and using these in classrooms extensively, having the light at about a 45-degree angle seems to be the best - No obvious glare but the light still reaches the board and what you've written looks like it glows.
      My lighting setup is what I would consider the "best-case scenario", so the imperfections in spite of that goes to show the flaw inherent to these boards!

    It is an epaper display that simulate real paper to an extend so no need of backlight which strains the eye. And also it takers more battery so no complain about not able to see in the dark as we are not able to see the writing in a book if it is dark

    • @NERDfirst
      @NERDfirst  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hello and thank you for your comment! Yes and no - While this is certainly backlight-less LCD technology I wouldn't really call it e-paper. The "standard" of what I would consider e-paper would be like the screen of Kindles or the Pebble watch, those would _really_ behave a lot like paper. But the LCDs on these tablets require higher-than-normal levels of lighting (and strategic viewing angles) to really read well, that was the point I was trying to emphasize.

    • @jincyquones
      @jincyquones 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not e-paper or anything you'd refer to as an LCD. It's has liquid crystals in it, but it's not a "display." Other than the erasing mechanism, it's not even electronic. It has more in common with erasable drawing toys that have existed for decades than modern display technology.

      Hello and thank you very much for your comment! That's very interesting, thank you for sharing. I've seen videos explaining how the blackboard works, apparently you can calibrate the "level" of erasure. Either it's too subtle (so erasure looks more like just smudging the existing writing around), or it has the effect you describe. Good to know it's available for around $20 though. If I can find it for around that price I'd be willing to give it a try.

    i was stupid enough to purchase an off brand version of this tablet. I admit, I should have done research on it. The one I bought on e-bay was branded as Howshow. The pics in the description showed beautiful drawings, some in green.and some in blue. I didnt realize this was a child's toy. I thought it would be perfect for my artistic 25 year old son. it appeared to be marketed toward serious artists by the images. I also didnt realize, there was no way to save the images, and no way to erase mistakes without erasing the whole thing. Not to mention, the e-bay price I paid for the off brand was 4 times the price of the same one on amazon. My thoughts when I realized it was a toy, was "no big deal, I can give it to a kid. But then, I translated the package info which was entirely in chinese. I found that yes, it was marketed for children, though the artwork on it in the ad was not a child's artwork. What alarmed me though was the warning on it. It stated, that should the screen get cracked, the LCD liquid inside can burn the skin! We all know how gentle 6 year old jack and 7 year old Jill are with their toys..right? So no chance of them getting burned by this chemical..right? "NOT!" I am sending this thing back if i can, and getting my son a device that he draws on while watching his image come up on his pc.

      Thinner line can be a pro or a con, depending on who you are and what your needs are. It started out as a con for me but now I appreciate it since I can cram more into the screen.
      As for the lighting point - Actually my point is that _both_ do badly in low light, and the key point I had to emphasize is that "low light" is not on the same scale as paper! You can still comfortably read paper at light levels that will cause the screen of these boards to look completely black. That's why it's an important point to emphasize since people can get an incorrect impression by watching these videos which are heavily lit.

      Hello and thank you for your comment! Yeah... not really worth the price of the more expensive one for sure. And they don't even come with the feature of seeming like they'd stick to a surface but falling off a few minutes later =P

    After my 2nd “official” brand broke I went with the cheaper Chinese version - 2 for the price of half the rip-off original, and still going longer than the original. Tell me - why should I get the original again??

    • @NERDfirst
      @NERDfirst  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello and thank you for your comment! For sure, unless it's particularly cheap or has special features not found elsewhere, I really can't recommend the branded ones at full price.

  • @NiMareQ

    The cheaper tablet is either on the brighter side, or when you cover the light, it is under a much darker environment than the left tablet. This comparison is wrong. You should have just swapped the tablets or move the light to the center.
    Also who would ever draw or write under such bad circumstances that you keep mentioning that the one on left is easier to read in dark? That makes no sense whatsoever. The thinner is of course much better for both writing and drawing, because you get much more fidelity.
    And the left one, being more sensitive to hands, could as well ruin whatever you draw/write as you can't even lean hand against it.

    • @NERDfirst
      @NERDfirst  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello and thank you for your comment! Yes, I'll admit that the light levels aren't perfectly equal across both boards - The light on the right is a little stronger so the comparison favors the off-brand board.
      Having said that, the observations in the video are consistent with day-to-day use - The off-brand looks better under strong light, while the Boogieboard looks better in limited light.
      Also do take note of a very important point. Neither device works well in typical room lighting - That is, dim lighting that is comfortable to read in is *insufficient* for either board to work well. These aren't "bad circumstances", these are typical circumstances but the boards don't have the contrast to look good even there.

    An eco-friendly solution?

    • @NERDfirst
      @NERDfirst  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello and thank you for your comment! Yes, I should have clarified that when I say "eco-friendly" I'm referring to in my particular use case.

    Hi,
    For everyone looking to really compare these tablets, I find this video very biased, for one thing the way/tone the author of the video uses to describe both tablets.
    After watching this video, I actually find the 7.99$ tablet really good, for the following reasons:
    - It does a great job at what it's meant to do, the lines are clear from what I could see on the video, of course not in the dark, because why would you write in the dark? And on the 99$ tablet, it wasn't that much clearer.
    - It does have some pressure sensitivity, if you pay close attention at 10:59 you can see how the curve fades away at the end.
    - I am not sure why anyone would need a rainbow background that can't be customized on such a tablet.
    - Joining the previous point, the off-brand tablet looks more of a tablet for grown ups taking notes or brainstorming, whereas the on-brand one looks more like a toy. I think they are two different tablets for two different use-cases.
    - The price is a big plus and it's justified by the fact that the tablet isn't branded. If it were, I'm sure the price would have gotten up a few folds.
    I'm personally interested in the 7.99$ tablet.
    Thanks.

      Hello and thank you very much for your comment! I would love to hear more about where you are picking up on any bias in the video - This would be a great opportunity for me to improve upon my future videos!
      Most of the points you mentioned are covered in the video, and my conclusion leans heavily in favor of the off-brand at the end of the day. I used the off-brand extensively in my work too! Definitely no bias against it.
