Carrera Tires vs. Urethane Tires in No-Mag/Magnetless Slot Car Showdown

  • We previously released a video about the stock rubber Carrera slot car tires (those that come included with a new Carrera digital or Evolution slot car. In that video we ran cars with both the stock tires and aftermarket Paul Gage urethane tires to compare their performance. The results showed very little difference between the two types of slot car tires but the urethanes did have a slight advantage over the stock Carrera tires.
    The most frequent comments we received on the video are from those who were interested in seeing the same tests performed but with magnetless/no-mag slot cars. Therefore, we used the same cars used in the original video and performed the same test except with the traction magnets removed.
    The video includes information regarding truing (or tuning) of slot car tires that apply to not only Carrera but other brands of slot cars such as Scalextric, Policar, Ninco, Slot-It. Aftermarket tires, such as Paul Gage urethane brand also require truing after installation.

    Get rid of the front magnet and do a proper mag free test . If your car is launching add some weight where the magnets were as a start and coat the front tyres with varnish to remove any grip . Good rubber tyres such as NSR will out perform urathanes in most cases .

    Oh man. "half mag" is not "no mag". Sorry to say, you need to take both magnets out to make it an accurate test. Love your channel. Hope you are willing to do a true no-mag test.

    Great, honest video. I too was betting on the urethane to win. I run urethane tires on all my cars for the reason you mention at the end of your video; longevity. I usually find that after a year or sometimes less the rubber adhesion properties go away and they almost need to be sanded before each use to get some sort of performance out them. I don't even run a car with rubber tires anymore for that simple fact.

    I don't understand your results, no disrespect, just saying my experience, I've been racing slot cars on my track and club racing, plastic and wood tracks and never, ever seen rubber stock tires being faster than silicone or urethane tires. The difference is extremely different at first lap, not even need to run the time. The rubber tires makes the car dance like crazy, and urethane are more sticky and hold the car in curve way better.
    So I really don't get how you get better results. With or without mags, doesn't matter. ✌️

    I prefer rubber over urethane, but now that I am just over a year into my car collection, more than half of my Carrera cars have all experienced melted tires. I’ve started replacing some of them with NSR rubber when I can find a suitable match. That was a good experiment!

      They are working out pretty good So far. I have only tried the classic treaded versions, but they are pretty sticky. I’m really liking their compound

    Great Video, this applies to the regular guys and gals who want to enjoy their cars without too much fuss about being petfect. You dont need to spend $$ after $$ to have fun.     Its great to see you putting up some content, I got into slotcars earlier this year and I relied on your channel for "know how". I purchased a Carrera digital set myself but instead of eurethane I run silicone. Could you do a similar comparison to see how silicones rank. Thanks, and I hope you will be putting up some more Slot car content. Oh BTW my favorite video was when you just had to get rid of your clone, that was classic

    I do the same,when the Carrera tires give up the ghost, I replace them with PGT. If i go magless I add some weight.

    Technically the test is mag or less mag. Not no mag. Urethanes work better on painted wood. Test test test, that's part of the fun.......

    Hi there, I prefer rubber on my 1/32`s. PU`s always leave their dust on the track and I like the grip of rubber better. Besides you need to true the PU`s more often, compared to rubber`s from my experience. I am curious, how the new rubber tires by Carrera will perform. They are suppose to last longer. I mainly use NSR Supertires, or Ultra`s. Also BRM has a few good rubber`s.

    Great test and video thank you! I’m a huge fan of Paul Gage tires but some of the Carrera tires are faster in my experience too.
    I’m lost on why the no magnet fad is so popular. I’ve tried it and it’s awful. Not for me.

    Would you and the Club rather race Mag or NO Mag? - Ive heard that you can control the 'Drift' more with NO Mag but you have to race 'Slower' and the normal fun/thrill suffers without Mag- Also apparently WITH Mag ther car is either ON the track or OFF with no inbetween feel...

      Running with no magnets slows everything down, so yes, there is more control just from the standpoint that you have more time to react to the car. As far as fun goes, it is fun either way as the driving experience is quite different. Your best bet is to try both ways and see what you like best. We usually run with the magnets but have the occasional no-mag race just for something different.

    Nice comparison. We went from stock on our Carrera GTY and used BobKat tires (they use a soft formulation of urethane) and found better control and lap speeds BUT we leave the magnets in our cars. What is your opinion when racing there ? Magnets or no Magnets Thanks🏁

      We normally run with the magnets. We occasionally run no-mag just for something different.

    Yeah nice test I kind of figured the rubber tires would work better and those carrera rubber tires are not no ware as good as other rubber 1/32 tires out, If you would have coated the rubber tires with a thin coat of wd40 and let it dry in the rubber tires really grip even much better and will run much faster.

    So it’s the track then. Perhaps Carrera knows a thing or two? Or their track simply doesn’t take advantage of what urethane has to offer. How about now do a Painted Carrera Track comparison? Great work!

    What software and setup are you using for the lap timing?

      The lap timing program we use it titled HSSRMS, developed by Bruce Yuengling (I probably have the spelling wrong, sorry Bruce). The other primary program for lap timing is called SmartRace. To use SmartRace you need the Carrera BlueTooth module and a smart phone or tablet. SmartRace does not work on a PC running Windows, but HSRMS does. HSSRMS needs a serial-to-usb cable to connect from the CU to a PC. If you are interested in more info on HSSRMS, specifically how to get the program or connect to a PC, let me know.

    Stock great when trued. When they go bad, they go bad - 1 year seems about it for them on the 20 cars I've been through in 4 years with our club. Urethane doesn't go bad (yet), so that's that. Sure are a lot of no-magnet people acting religious about it online. I yawn to them.
