    Wow, the orchard is beautiful. It will be fun choosing new varieties to plant. We've had terrible cedar-apple rust this year (and got rid of the cedars for the future) - our ornamental crabapple looks terrible but one apple next to it is okay. All that plumbing looks very daunting. You are right about investigating structures and moving pipes now while you can, even if it means more time with only one loo. When you shop for upholstery, look for a high-wear rating, however that is done in France. Lots of people get what they find pretty and then moan about how it's grubby or not holding up. That's another "do it right while you can" issue. I've learned the hard way to stick with wool rugs - no polypropylene, nylon, whatever. Wool holds up.

  • @kathywiseman7944

    The quince probably has a rust as do the apples. You need to dispose of the leaves when they fall and the bad spots in the tree. The best time to work on fruit trees is in the winter months when the sap is not flowing.

    the apple you picked from the tree at the beginning of the orchard tour is called "Lederapfel" - "leather apple" in austria, at least i believe it's this variety. it is THE BEST baking apple you could wish for, quite tart and of excellent texture. we had one of those trees in our garden where i grew up and my family has used this apple to make "Apfelstrudel" and various cakes for generations, it's very very rare nowadays, i hope you can keep it and use it :)

    Hi. Just a couple of ideas. Have you considered either a linen or mohair boucle fabric for the day bed? How about a soapstone sink for the downstairs laundry room? If you like to grill food outdoors, and you may already know this, applewood is good for grilling. When you have the trees removed from the orchard consider saving some for cooking purposes. Cheers! -Glen

    What a cute daybed. I like all the velvets- the yellow, & the 2 patterned ones. I agree with what others have said that it depends on which room you put it.
    It would be nice to have a variety of fruit trees, not just cider apples & quince.
    It does look like the bathroom is going to take a while.

  • @dloadthis1617
    @dloadthis1617 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Good job! Maybe in the future you can build some sort of an awning to cover the wood pile or at least cover it with a tarp so it doesn't get wet?
    The problem with your Quince is commonly referred to as Black Spot,,,or Fabraea Maculata. This common disease of Quince can cause severe injury to the fruit if not controlled. On the leaves and fruit the disease shows as small circular spots, reddish-brown on the periphery, with black centers. You need to have a certified Arborist to come to your property and spray all of the trees that are diseased. ALL of your remaining Apple trees will need to be treated for the Mistletoe fungus. If it were me, I would just remove all of the Apple trees (Even the ones still standing) as they appear to be affected with some sort of beetle that is eating the trees from within.
    Even the Apple trees that may appear healthy probably also have a beetle problem.
    Bulldoze all the trees and treat the soil for insects,,, then add nutrients to the new trees you plant.
    If you have a certified arborist over he can inspect all the trees,,, even your Chestnut tree. You certainly don't want to lose that to insects or some other disease.

    • @OurFrenchChateau
      @OurFrenchChateau  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    So happy Dominic is getting a spa treatment and his hoof is getting better. I would go with a solid velvet or a small print on the daybed. The color would depend on which room and the color scheme of that room. That bathroom is quite the situation. Hope it goes smoothly and thanks for sharing 😍😘

  • @nicolethijs5428
    @nicolethijs5428 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    My grandmother had exactly the same daybed,meaning the same system.
    I would go for a solid blue gey velvet. Although I love patterned fabric very very much such a piece commands that you designe the whole room around it. A solid fabric gives you more options. Scary mess all that bathroom mess!

    No pumpkin spice here thank you. Wood stacking, pup was trying to help. Where are your kids ? Seems like a good chore for them. Kill the mistletoe or start marketing it. It’s quince spot , fã área mácula la .or black spot. It’s a fungus and requires a fungicide treatment. It comes from the apples unfortunately, so your whole orchard needs to be treated.

    Not the place to stack wood. Put it away from the buildings. Far away. Then on top get some old sheet metal roofing and lay on top. Put cement blocks or big rocks on top. Really bug rocks so the wind doesn't blow the sheet metal off.
    Get a rasp and some hoof nippers and learn to trim equine feet. It is easy. They need to be trimmed at least at 4 week intervals or they will get contracted heels, etc.
    You guys are city slickers for sure. SFO.

    Something that I suggest it’s that don’t block your beautiful building (s) stacking the wood in front Instead I will looking for specific place for this since you have a lot space.
    And the last one is your furniture. Most of the fabric for beds and chair to be easy to decorate are without to many design meanings one color or soft lines same for the curtains. De yellow color will be look s nice and you can get that color to match the walls , trims that are regular white.

      I must say that french individuals try and succeed at saving some châteaux (ex : Michel GUYOT saved Château de Saint-Fargeau and Château de Bridoire 40 years ago 🤩) - and there are many more, young or older, feeling concerned😉. Our governement can't take every old building in charge, it's impossible- there is already 45 907 monuments listed as historical and so, under state protection and eligilible to state grants for renovation- Although, it's true that 19th century mansions are not really considered as worth to be saved, not really historical monuments (unless if the owner is famous)- Slowly, mentalities change...... Luckily, the château virus is international and isn't ready to be cured😁

    Best thing to do when deciding upholstery fabric is to think about how the piece will be used. For example, when I was getting our living room couch recovered I rubbed the fabric samples all over the dogs to see how much pet hair they would hold, then I rubbed chocolate and red wine on the sample. I washed the sample to see how it held up and made my decision based on the abuse. If you want a hard wearing, pet friendly fabric you can't go wrong with microsuede (aka ultra suede, Alcantara).

    In Brittany, every decent houselold had their appletrees for cider. It is very important and fun to be able to produce one's own cider. In south Brittany everyone had "une treille" too.

    Use sunbrella fabric. It is great and washes nicely if dogs and cats get on it

    I’ve been gardening for 45 yrs. The last 2years - I’ve lost a pomegranate, apple & cherry. They look pathetic. I put them all in. Also - one of my blueberry shrubs is feeble. I planted 4 figs - 3 have been run over by my grass mower. 😡- I put cages around the 2 victims & then HE MOWED OVER A 3’ tree . My my tomato crop failed this year. My eggplant is orange. My orange bell peppers are the size of a cherry tomato. What in the Sam Hill is GOING ON ? They cloud seed heavy here which results in heavy ammonium, barium, strontium - it alkalinizes the soil. Apparently- rabbits defoliating the eggplant causes radiation burn and turns eggplant orange. My oregano is growing it’s ass off, though. 😳 My basil failed. In Georgia. How DOES that happen. I always cut multiple bouquets & root in water to keep it going. It’s almost unrecognizable as basil.

      I grow in raised beds & have paid good money for compost & cedar chips for mulch. I’m perplexed. And a little embarrassed when my friends / family visit & look as if I poisoned everything. It’s crazy

      Dahlias blooming their hearts out. Even garlic chives never bloomed.
      I planted 65 sets of leeks - maybe 4 will get to scallion size. I amended the leak bed when I noticed a lack of growth. Never had an issue with them before.
      Not whining ( even though it sounds like it- trying to noodle out a solution)
      I am a 1 person family. With a dog /cat. I grew corn for the first time ever. Beautiful plants, produced ears. The ones I harvested early were ok. So - I let time elapse a day or two thinking they’d develop more sugar - they rotted. Unbelievable. I’m Totally organic because I have honey bees & they are PERFECT

      It rained every single day of July & August here. Not continuously- it rained - was 98 degrees- and then rained again. Repeat. 60 days. My grass is amazing. Looks like Florida grass. Have never once fertilized it. My pecan tree is dropping pecans. There is ZERO FLESH in the pecans. Squirrel population has declared a state of emergency. Damned good thing there’s an Aldi close by - but their inventory shrinks weekly.

      My garden did terrible as well! I have raised beds. The only thing that did ok was red potatoes and herbs. Basil went insane! I planted a bunch of onions and got 2 very tiny ones. No peppers or tomatoes except Roma tomatoes. But those don't have time to ripen. I also planted sweet potatoes and got one! Carrots also got pretty much nothing. It has rained pretty much ALL summer long! And hot as blazes when not raining! Guess there's always next year but really frustrating.

    I would get a crab apple tree as they are fantastic to make preserves. I can them whole in a light syrup with cinnamon and a spiced rum. Delicious on ice cream. That day bed would be gorgeous reupholstered. 🥰

    love the day bed but please no pattern. The yellow velvet is lovely but it will depend on where you will use it and how it will work with the rest of your decor.

    My "vote" is a SOLID COLOR VELVET" ...lucky and great find! Perhaps you'll find another "color/type/upholstery color, etc." UNDER THE YELLOW...MAYBE lift a corner and see. I really like the versatility of the piece.

    Save your iron piping! It is better on containing the noise! We replaced our's as we where doing something similar moving things about in the bathrooms, what a mistake!
    Two years later we opened the wall up from the kitchen side and put back the iron piping! BIG difference! Use plastic piping under the cellar floor or outside and use PEX fo your water services!

    I have something to say! Like the second velvet sample for a couch the piece on the left was too light for a seat.(might get a bit dirty). Some of the old yellow looked okay ish . You could save it as a pillow. Is the velvet silk by any chance? Or maybe make a yellow new cushion. It’s a chateau so do ‘live out loud’

    I would choose a neutral color that would go well in most rooms for the day bed. That way it will go well anywhere you put it.

    Mistletoe was traditionally purposely seeded under the bark of apple trees for aesthetic reasons. You could always keep the tradition going and the tree with hollows I say keep it.
    It's a chateau of an hotel for flies and fauna alike. Fig trees on a south facing wall however you need to restrict roots n a purpose built bed otherwise you get huge foliar growth and little fruit sometimes none.
    Live your place
