A New Approach to Disney’s Robotic Character Pipeline

- Designing a bipedal robotic character with impeccable balance is impressive, but simply isn’t enough when you consider Disney characters strut, prance, sneak, tromp, shuffle, hustle, saunter or meander. Disney Research recently unveiled a new robotic character prototype that combines procedural animation, modular hardware, and reinforcement learning to be able to design and program a walking character capable of these unique gaits and traits. Even more impressive? They can do this within months, not years! The ability to have a new robot design learn to imitate artistic motion in a simulation environment before it’s being built advances Imagineering’s innovation pipeline … and we can’t wait to see what more can be done with this exploration!

If Disney could make these for home use, they could sell millions of them immediately.
a similar one exists, called Anki Cozmo 2 and Anki Vector. They're also highly emotionally expressive and emotionally interactive
How ? It has no hands. My company is selling human like hands they can work even in deep sea or space and definitely can be useful for home use on any kind of mobile robotic platform.
Problem is they don't work the way you might think and the expense of building them is insane. Remember them showing the robot of the rabbit on Rollerblades at one of their previous conventions. Disney's been doing stuff like this a lot longer than people realize most people don't remember that Disney animatronics that they started building back in the 1960s for their theme parks and for science fairs. I'm sure some people remember the big golf ball Expo 86 or Expo 85 at one of the Disney theme parks where are they built a big vision of the future attraction for Disney inside a giant golf ball looking thing back then Disney did a lot of stuff to do with animatronics and robots but that side of Disney kind of got forgotten and shelf for a long time. I still remember in the early 2000s talk about Disney theme parks shutting down and the entire Disney Empire going away and then all of a sudden they bought lucas films and a bunch of other stuff and just suddenly started pulling money out of thin air and buying one Studio after another. I'm kind of surprised they're not trying to build a more functional version of R2-D2 and Wally when you see them doing something like this this kind of thing is more meant to be something you rent at a Disney theme park then something that they're actually planning on selling to the public that's assuming it's not a remote control unit being operated by a puppeteerJim Henson puppeteering Studio was doing stuff like this back in the 1980s. If anybody remembers Johnny 5 from Short Circuit he was a very elaborate puppet operated by multiple puppeteers if I remember correctly it was made by Henson Studios and Hansen Studios has made similar puppets that look very different without their latex bodies
Disney should partner with Boston Dynamics, it would be a Win-Win Partnership 👍
They could, but they won't.
I've never seen a robot with so much personality before. The animated expressions it makes are so good.
Then you need to see more robots, there are many good options in market, look for Cozmo or Vector
It's doing something similar to Keepon, the robot yellow snowman thing. Except it can now walk around and prolly chop off your fingers if you happen to grab it wrong. lol
Wow that is one of the best walking robots I have ever seen. It's also very Star Wars-ish, and could easily be a great robot character.
It looks like it’s based off of BD-1 from Star Wars
I think a few large sticks and some Ewoks will topple it.
Lookup Boston dynamics atlas
it's literally based on a BD droid
you should see small walking groot
these are exactly the kind of beautiful machines i want to make
Same
And you can do it! I believe in you.
Same
well, what are you doing about it?
Great! Now make droids walk around Galaxy’s Edge.
About that….
@@castorvolk yes, I saw it.
It’s amazing.
They already are. :)
Disney should partner with Boston Dynamics, it would be a Win-Win Partnership 👍
@@thenotoriousgryyn342 yes
It's a BD-1 prototype droid! That's awesome! And I didn't know the imagineers had their own YT channel. Subscribed!
I came here looking for this comment!
Yes! I need a BD-1 in my life!
Love seeing robots have more interesting builds than the basic humanoid or cat/dog. These look inspired by duck/geese anatomy and have a bit of wobbliness that makes them look organic. Honestly fantastic work.
given the head movement, chickens.
dodo bird.
@@jacobhargiss9909 I'm thinking chicken cos that head movement is an insect-eater not a grain or berry eater. And a dodo was a grain/berry eater, they're a type of pigeon.
@@thekaxmax true, I just cant help thinking dodo bird based on the structure of its body.
@@jacobhargiss9909 true as a visual, but they're based on the original droid plus mechanical constraints.
OMG this almost exactly like BD-1 from Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order!!! Please keep up the great work!!!
So they made BD-1 from Star Wars
That they did lol!!!
Ok this is absolutely incredible - well done to the Imagineers engineering team for coming up with all that you had to do in order to create such a well balanced, dynamic robot with personality. Wonderful touches to the antennae, eye blinking, and head/body bobbing that help tell a wonderful story. These will be a delight to watch roam through the parks.
Adorable, magnificent engineering.
Bro that's a billion dollar bot. You can't tell me every kid wouldn't love one of those things. Heck, I'm 41 years old and I want one!
unfortunately it costs a billion dollars.
Get an aibo. Or for a less advanced option, a vector, or emo robot.
By the second half of this year, robots are gonna be everywhere, trust me. You'll have one more lifelike than this one for cheaper.
Imagineers at their best!!! We need to see more of this in the parks!!!
“Our kid is growing up so fast” - WALL-E to EVE
This is why the entertainment sector is important for tech development, and why the Imagineers have always been amazing to me. It takes a talented engineer to build a thing, but it takes an artist to actually bring it to life.
Disney just over here casually making real life BD-1 droids...
The flashlight to look where you're point is such a good character moment.
Living in the future. Great job again Disney!
walks and behaves like a cute duck!
Holy crap that is amazing. I can't wait to see this being used in a live action Star Wars project!
Imagine having a dozen of them walking around a star wars themed park.
@@BGDGr81I mean it totally looks like a BD-unit droid.
Great design! I really appreciate the beauty and balance. It looks both natural and like a machine.
I can't wait for the dystopian Disney Arms and Robotics division.
Moves like its animated..crazy
For decades, everything has been going virtual. Now the virtual things are becoming real. So exciting!
That's extremely impressive. Use of the head as a counter balance is smart. Kind of like a bird with a long neck.
Oh my God, it's adorable.
Geez, the code on that must be insane. Sooo butter smooth and lifelike. I wanna see how they coded it. I gotta know if they used HD method with Quaternion matrices or just stuck with screw axis matrices or maybe something I haven't learned yet. Such an accomplishment 👏 🙌
Yes, it's very interesting, but there is no information (
It is most likely a four-layer neural network with very few parameters.
This is the first time I have actually seen a happy robot. Idk how you did it.
The moment in my life when I most felt the power of an individual's dream was not when I encountered the concept of Tesla or the iPhone, but when I was looking up information about EPCOT. The inspiration and admiration I have for the concept of EPCOT drives my business today.
That's would be very cute practical effect in some upcoming movie 😊
You know, it's astonishing that Walt Disney Imagineering channel only has 31k subscribers....
That's litterally bd-1 from fallen Jedi order
I'd love to work on stuff like that!
the possibility of robot movie freedom like movie Finch for example, can be unfathomable
Reminds me of Boston Dynamics' work, very cool!
I usually don’t like when robots make these small steps but with these stubby legs it works really. Well
This is exactly what Walt would have wanted.
Thanks for sharing!
It's a chicken, and I love it. Makes me miss my Henbane.
I recognize this little droid. I so hope it means what I think it means if they build this little guy.
that is so incredible ! WOW. I am playing around with robotics for sometime now and this kind of project makes me dream ! I would buy one right away if it would be possible.
I went to Disneyland for the first time this year and I really have no idea where you get these people or how they do what they do, very smart engineers.
super awesome!😍
SDK? Dev kit? Download so we can dump it into our own personal robots with mods? 3d files? Give us moreee
I will absolutely buy BD-1 when he becomes available.
So awesome! Great job Disney Research
make more!! this is so cute
That's seriously impressive work
Instantly the coolest robot ever.
This is great! It's this kind of thing, along with many others, that makes me want to be an Imagineer. I would love to help make this sort of robo-buddy and share creations with guests
you can buy one like this it's called Anki Cozmo 2 and Anki Vector. They're also highly emotionally expressive and emotionally interactive
Its like Wall-E SO CUTEEE
Wait, it can shine a flashlight? My dad is gonna disown me!
So much character in the bobbing!
This is amazing!!
Sweet! Now I want the "plans" so that I can build one!
This is so cool! I want one!!!!
And this right here is why I would love to help out in imagineering! ❤❤❤
This is one of the best things I've seen Disney do in a very long time. Focus on this!
This little guy has quite the personality!
This is awesome!!!
Imagineers are the bright, beating heart of the future of technology. So happy to witness the beginnings of this science and magic.
It's funny how so many fictional ai and robot characters like Hal, Kitt and R2D2 can actually come to life.
I appreciate that they thought this one through more than the BB8 droid. Having the head floating on top of the body makes it unstable and difficult to create a single power source.
I'd love to have one!!!
Loved it
BD-1!!!! He is so cute and funny
this guy boutta get struck by lightning and go on an adventure
When you know a company has too much money.......now sell this to me!
That is adorable!
Nice to see a well animated robot, since most robots I see are animated in a linear motion.
This isn't an animation this is a real robot
These are way too cute, I hope they add toys of them to the droid depot.
Impressive...!!!
I need one NOW
I think disney can work together with boston dynamics to make a lot of pretty cool robots
very cool!
Definitely gives off Droid vibes
Yeah, like BD-1 from Jedi Survivor
I, for one, welcome our cute WALL-E-esque overlords
a lot of works needs to be done, to even come close to the fluidity of motion boston dynamics offers.
As for walking in nature, the legs should have knees, and maybe even longer legs, so it's less likely to stumble on trunks and branches.
I want this one!!!
Wow amazing robot this is so cool!!!
Nossa, estão muito evoluidos esses robôs. 👏👏👏
all we need now is Cal Kestis at Galaxy's Edge
This is amazing
How are you going to prevent someone picking it up and making off with it like Hitchbot?
this is so cool!!
do you have the video with the presentation?
Can you share step to do it. What knowledge for this and you book can help me do it, thank you.
I'm sure if that was for sale it would make every kid get off their phone to play with it I mean I I just had a statue I would still stare for hours.
So I mean that's definitely BD-1 right?
Okay, @jamesbruton, time for you to make one of these too!
Nice job! Sell these puppies and I'll be one of the first buyers. Finally, a Disney product I can get behind wholeheartedly.
omggggggg thay nailed it!!!!!!
What if funny is out of all the robots we have seen, this one I want at home NOW! :)
Great work WDI R&D
“Park attendee - please put down your weapon! You have 20sec to comply!” Little Eddie 209
Looks like Wall-e and Eva had a baby, and it has legs! Very nice! I love the chicken-like neck movement when it walks, and the antennas with their movements are a genius idea!
Wow what a time to be alive
This is pretty cool
These are clearly inspired by Boston Dynamics spot, its so awesome to see WED move on to new frontiers!. SICK!!!!
