    No other musician has added as much joy, hope, instruction, tears (except for maybe Debussy), and pure enjoyment consistently over the past 41 years. When I get to heaven, King David will be second on my list to hug to Phil Keaggy. Thanks be to God, to Phil, and to you for sharing

    Well, if nothing else, I didn't know this guy 3 minutes ago, and I'm still watching despite TH-cam's relentless attempts at making me see commercials so... you've accomplished at least that much. Thank you very much.
    I know all these old tapes are long out of print and it'd be a real shame for all that wonderful material to simply disappear without all the new generation of young musicians having the chance to check them out and learn from them. Once again thank YOU very much.

    The Wind And The Wheat is where Phil started showing his heavy Holdsworth and Hedges influences. His Master and the Musician album was inspired by Anthony Phillips' The Geese and the Ghost. And frankly, I think Phil's album contains stronger material. But the second track on the Phillips album with the Phil Collins vocal is a beautiful song.

    • @kickstar1
      @kickstar1  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Interesting. I don't know who Anthony Phillips is. I know Keaggy was really into Holdsworth but I've never heard him mention Hedges.

      @@kickstar1 Oh, he's mentioned Hedges in the past. Where do you think all that acoustic fretboard tapping came from? Phil started doing that all the time after Hedges released his acclaimed album, Aerial Boundaries, in 1984.
      Anthony Phillips was an original member of Genesis. He left after their first album and he doesn't tour so he's mainly know to guitar enthusiasts and old Genesis fans for his many studio releases over the years. The Geese and the Ghost was his first major release back in 1977. And of course, Phil released The Master... the following year.

      @@kickstar1 He sure did. Over a lot of years, running into each other allowed us to become friends, which is pretty crazy because he is the reason I started playing guitar and my guitar hero. Long story short, someone stole my ebow when I was playing a show in Nashville. I was going to play Let everything else Go at church and didn't have an ebow and was fairly broke at the time. I emailed Phil and asked him if had a used one he might want to sell. They last for ever but I thought he might have one not in use. He told me to come over to his house, that he had one. I showed up next day and he gave me the one he has in this video, which is the first ebow he's ever owned. He used it on the Master and the Musician and a bunch of other records. I used it that Sunday and immediately retired it to a nice spot on the mantle. That dude is such a humble and sweet person. He even played a ripping solo on one of my songs, which is over on my youtube channel. I think you'd dig it.

    I always liked Phil because he was the only player I knew back then that sounded like Allan Holdsworth. I used to attend church at a place in Southern California called Mount Soledad Presbyterian and one Sunday evening I brought a friend to church with me and lo and behold, Phil was there and was going to play that evening. I met him and we chatted for a while. He's a very nice man and a great player. Unfortunately, the pastor I liked left the church for another opportunity and the guy who replaced him was flakey and prone to superstitious "laying on of hands" where he physically "encouraged" people to feint, or fall over like there was some power in his hands. It was bogus. I left that church. I didn't hear from Phil Keaggy again, I don't know what happened to him.
    The Christian music scene flopped really hard after the Amy Grant incident, and many of the artists I listened to disappeared. Twila Paris, Margaret Becket, Will McFarlane, Benny Hester and Koinonia were on my short list of Gospel groups, along with Amy Grant. I saw DC Talk play at a show in South By Southwest in Austin in the late 90s but it did not go down well. The opening act was a group from New Orleans that was a blues band, and clearly not a Gospel act. They were African American "Negroes" and I think the crowd was "uncomfortable" with them. Some of the audience raised a huge protest and they came in and shut down the beer taps and alcohol sales at the venue. They band was out of there soon after. I was embarrassed for the New Orleans group and the horrible booking they got. DC Talk was pathetic that evening, jumping around like they were "rock stars" and I realized something that had been on my mind for a long time. The Gospel scene does not cross over well with secular music in America and most of the Christian community is narcissistic, hypocritical, and racially prejudiced. They are also mostly ignorant of world history if it is not mentioned in the Bible.
    Phil talks here about Pat Metheny and Eric Johnson, both great players though not Gospel based. I have always thought Phil sounded like Paul McCartney meets Allan Holdsworth. I'm sure he was influenced by both. At one point in time I was in a Gospel group and wanted to play for a living. It was not meant to be and I eventually gave up on various Christian churches and their desire to raise a lot of money and build big, expensive compounds to support preachers and their lackeys in their "Mickey Mouse Club" social organizations. These days I try not to throw the baby out with the bath water, and realize I only wanted to be decent, play guitar well, and not fall into the "Sex, Drugs, and Rock-n-Roll" dumpster fire of the eighties. I love Jazz, Rock, Blues, Reggae, and Surf-Western. I just don't care for lyrical content and ideology that is ignorant or dangerous. There were so many anti-Christian groups in the 80s. I fell into the huge battle going on in American society at the time which was the Christian community (right wing) wanting to control lyrical content during the Reagan era. These days, most of the evangelicals seem content with Trump and Q-anon and other nonsense, thanks to a long string of Evangelical prosperity teaching television ministries that have gone down in flames. No thanks. Adios Christianity, do some research. Investigate world religions and world history. God is bigger than that crap. Religion was made for man, not man for religion. But good luck Phil! it was great to meet you! I love "The Wind and the Wheat"!

    Phil Keaggy is, without question, a brilliant guitarist and a genius. However, that doesn't make him a great teacher. Even his slowed down passages are nearly impossible to decipher. He could perhaps teach at Juilliard to students who already have a professional skill set. That said, if you don't expect to really learn from this video, you can still appreciate his mastery of his instrument and his music.

    • @kickstar1
      @kickstar1  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's important to keep in mind this was released long before TH-cam so any repeatable video was massively instructional. But yeah, if somebody is looking for Keaggy to teach you how to hold a pick then this won't do much for you. But in 1989 making the jump from trying to figure out what he was doing from listening alone to being able to actually see it was huge. Still is.

      Yes....
      Alot if what he is doing is minor pentatonic scales mixed in with the blues scale, harmonic minors and chromatics for that jazzier outside tension.
      Look through those scales and see where the bends occur. Most are whole or half step bends.
      Alot if his slides or glisses are sliding in and out of the first parts of the scales.....
      Not for the beginner but not something a beginner can't work up to.
