but anyone who's anybody in the finger style world, is very well acquainted with keaggy and his stylistic prowess of his Olsons over the years.

Phil lives close by. I had the opportunity to hear him play to a small group at a local Music shop. Seeing his ability close up was a treat. Nice guy. His Olson guitar cost more than my first home. Thank you for respecting his Christian faith.

I have seen, and talked to Phil many times. He is truly a humble man and a dear brother in The Lord. Last time in was in Jax, FL, I took my Les Paul to the concert in Murray Hill. He played, Happy-of which I sang the intro-then he signed my guitar. What I love about Phil is he plays every note and he loves The Lord through his music.

My favorite way to see Phil live is when it's just he, an acoustic guitar, and his JamMan. He does a lot of layering and becomes a one man band. I don't know if you're looking to feature him again, but here's a clip like I described. He does some nice intro stuff, but the song really takes off at about the 2:10 mark. th-cam.com/video/3wpn6LVxX0s/w-d-xo.html

I was lucky enough to see him at a show in like the mid 90s he was incredible! Even got to meet him afterwards, nicest guy ever. I’m a atheist and I have about a 200 song Keaggy Spotify playlist that we listen to all the time. It’s mostly his acoustic instrumental stuff. 1991s “Beyond Nature” is my favorite album from him, it’s so brilliant and peaceful, I’ve been sleeping to it for years! 👍🏻

    • @Kwaded
      @Kwaded 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thank you for your kind and respectful words about Phil. Also, I really appreciate the heads up on the “beyond nature“ album as I somehow missed that one and will now look it up.
BTW: I to have found that religion seems to bring up more questions than answers. I am a hyper analytical person - the most analytical person I have ever met actually. That can come in handy, of course, but it can also present some con founding challenges. One thing that becomes increasingly clear to me though is that there is a spiritual unseen realm Dash a reality in dimensions beyond our mortal three dimensional reality. I have become convinced but there really is such a thing as a very dark, evil, malevolent room as well as a kingdom with all the opposite attributes. Irrespective of the many unanswered questions, I’ve concluded that , Of all the religions, the Judeo Christian story or narrative explains most closely the force is that I have come to believe are real.
As I write this on October 30 of 2021, Eric Metaxas is releasing a new book called “is atheism dead?“ If you or anyone else reading this comment wants some very intelligent and reasonable observations and commentary on this whole topic, I strongly recommend that you get a copy of this outstanding book. While Eric unabashedly comes from a Christian worldview, I find his treatise fair and very well thought out. Perhaps the thing that most readers will appreciate most is the extensive outside knowledge that he has researched and compiled in this book from various leading experts and authorities.

the great thing about seeing Phil live, is about half of it is improvised. On his Philly Live DVD, in the commentary, he mentions that the opening song was just something he was playing around with backstage as they were introducing him! He is so good at improvising that his sound guy started recording his sound checks because he would have many magical moments. His CD , "Roundabout" is all recorded soundchecks. On his album, "On The Fly" which is played entirely on a Parker Fly, he has one jam that is over 30 minutes long, totally improvised. He said he was in the zone and would have gone longer, but he looked over at the reel to reel and saw it was running out out of tape. He also has a song on "Acoustic Sketches" called "The Marionette" , it was an improvisation he did as someone read a poem called The Marionette. He did a second take, but ended up using the first one

I've seen Phil over a dozen times live in all kinds of venues and settings. I saw him play in front of 10,000 people and a group of 6 fellow players at a guitar summit. He was the same player and person each time. A genuine soul and one of the finest players ever. I saw him walk into a room at 11:30 in the evening after a full day of teaching and playing at his guitar summit. The group was a mix of new and very experienced players but Phil had the ability to encourage and instruct each one at their level. I actually got to play with him for about an hour that night and having been a new player at the age of 42 his encouragement put my playing on another level. The best advice he gave was don't be afraid to mess up. He encouraged us to stretch ourselves and with that we would experience failure. But that was ok just part of the process. Hard to believe but he is a finer human being than a player and his playing speaks for itself. Thanks phil...

Thank you very much Fil for analysing! Greetings from Germany.

Fil, as always, an enjoyable and insightful analysis.
In my opinion, Phil Keaggy is the best living guitarist and I do not say that lightly. His technical prowess is only exceeded by his sense of melody, harmony, and rhythm. As you correctly stated, his legato is face melting but I would point out his contrapuntal movement in multiple rhythmic centers. Phil is the master of the instrument.
    Well done, sir!

Phil has been one of my favorites for decades. I followed him as a teen. I saw him play once in Scotland in the mid-80s and a couple of more times on the east coast in the States. An absolute maestro on guitars, both electric and acoustic.

Phil, I have a message from Phil Keaggy for you. I have known Phil for over 40 years now and I am doing a story on the 50th Anniversary of his "What A Day" album. The first record he did after leaving Glass Harp. In researching for my story I came across your video here and sent Phil the link... this is how he replied... "I wish I could meet this Phil….
He’s so intelligent and gifted at what he does!" Then he wrote to me... "I bet you could make a connection and if you do please tell him I like his videos!" So there you go - well done. I have booked Phil at least 15 times over the years to play at concerts or conferences for us and I published Christian Musician magazine for over 20 years. Phil was on the very first cover of my magazine and many times after that over the years. He played my wedding even... as my bride was coming down the aisle Phil was playing the 'Wedding March" on his acoustic guitar through his JamMan. I thought to myself, "Lord, does it get any better than this?" Anyway, thanks for what you do. I learn a lot from your videos. Bruce

I have met and I have had the honor of playing with Phil. What an awesome human being and musician. I played with him and Lincoln Brewster on a third stage at a 3 day christian concert. the guy is so humble and full of smiles and so willing to give advice both on guitar and life with a gentle smile and love. The man will always hold a special place in my heart even though I know he won't remember me.

Phil is a Christian. Had he hone out in the world at 20 years old or so he would have set the world on fire. However, he chose to do Christian music. His song Who Will Speak Up for the Children is so powerful. Way ahead of his time given the subject matter. Awesome performance. Majorly responsible for my acceptance of Christ.

I saw him back in 1975 and then probably another dozen times through the early 2000's. Amazing player. His improvs in the mid 70's thru the early 80's were rivaled by very few. Interesting that his very best studio solos were never done on his own work. "He'll do the Same" and "Which One are You" by Paul Clark feature Phil as the lead guitarist. Take a listen - you'll be blown away and wonder how he was not mentioned in the same breath as any of the very best in the rock genre. Trust me; check it out.

So glad to here you critique this amazing video. Phil flatly denies the rumor concerning Jimi Hendrix. I had the chance to see him in Tulsa, Oklahoma. After the concert I looked for him to get his autograph. Only to find him giving free guitar lessons to a large group of small children. What a privilege that was to watch. That alone was worth the price of admission!!!!

A great summary of a great player. Hearing guys like him, and others in that quality class, makes one feel vastly inferior and question why in the world one continues to play. At the end of the day it has to be the love of music that is the key to it all

I have this on VHS! Great video. One of the best things I learned from it was him talking about hearing guys play things he can’t play but rather let it bother him, he gets inspired to create his own take on what they play. I’ve seen him play play live twice. Incredible show!

Phil is from my hometown, Youngstown, Ohio, have a friend that roadied for Glass Harp, still have their album. Youngstown also home of my friends guitarist Gary Markasky from Michael Stanley Band & drummer Myron Grombacher who played with Rick Derringer Band & most known for Pat Benatar Band.
