Conservative peer Daniel Finkelstein says he’s picked up “a bit of talk in government circles” that Rishi Sunak could call a general election in July because the Tories “don't think that things will improve”.

You're thinking about it wrong. They're all assuming there's some kind of clever calculation going on in Sunak's head to pick the best time for the election from a political point of view. But he has no political instincts and is almost entirely passive, reacting to events. He'll call the election on the last day that he's allowed to do so, because anything else would require him to make a proactive decision.

I think the idea is that he has to go to another country to do tech because his own government has invested so poorly in this area at home, or allowed our own companies to have been sold for peanuts to foreign buyers and dismantled.
