    I've used this watch for work on an iron ore freighter ship for a while now. It's been through some of the absolute dirtiest, wettest, nastiest harsh conditions. Iron ore dust will scratch glass very easily and get in any nook and cranny it can find. This watch has more than held up through it and still looks very nice. Only some very light scratches on the crystal from being scraped hard into a steel bulkhead while working in tight spaces. Definitely a super durable watch and keeps great time, highly recommended.

    As a kid back in the 60s, I remember the names Hamilton and Bulova being very desirable names in watches to aspire to. Then Timex began it's assault in the affordable watch market, and then came Seiko and the quartz crisis. I still have a soft spot for both watch brands, even though they're now Swiss owned.

    • @kdids
      @kdids 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Billy Shute Hamilton was not swiss in the 60s and Citizen didnt exist - they were both great american brands that were respected. Timex was also good but it was an intro brand but still better then the intro brand they are now.

    Bulova is an old brand with a long history. In my opinion they could make much more out of it and in a higher price point. I agree this is a nice watch, 50-100 meters WR would be perfect.

    Definitely like the finishing of this Bulova compared to the Hamilton Khaki. The red 24 hour numbers are great. Dial and outer case have a deep rich distinct color. Little too think, and really should be priced the same as the Khaki. I don’t have any Bulova’s but am looking.

    I love this watch. But you’re right, the water resistance should be better. I’d bet a screw-down crown would help, and there’s no reason not to have one (unless it’s hand-wound, of course).

  • @paulschmolke188
    @paulschmolke188 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Bought one, like it but needed a better strap and I don’t like the second hand being dark. Very accurate and plenty of endurance. I’m happy but for the dark second hand. The supplied strap was comfortable but sorta blah. I added a nicely padded Hadley Roma in smooth black.

  • @BrendanW0214
    @BrendanW0214 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I bought one of these as my first brand new watch (I do have a small collection of US military watches from the war, a Bulova from the 1920s, and a Vostok Komandirskie) a couple of months back and it’s a fantastic watch, and it was actually this video that sold me on one. The only thing I really didn’t like was the strap as it was very uncomfortable in the summer months in the southern US where I live, so I ended up replacing it with a bond striped RAF strap which really compliments the overall look of the watch.

    Mineral glass, not in-house movement and that thick, for a price that close to a hammy khaki field. I don’t know. Still a beautiful watch, I love Bulova, have and had some, but for that price I’m not sure.

    • @ajiebkp
      @ajiebkp 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Well, technically Miyota and Bulova are owned by Citizen... Though, I agree for that price, the movement and 3bar WR are kind of a letdown. I think for around 100$ cheaper, the Bulova American Clipper (ref96A242) is a better value proposition (granted, non-hack).

    Great colourway, including the deep green of the strap.

    • @catlike1
      @catlike1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Agree. Nice watch but the water resistance is subpar for a field watch. That said, the Hamilton Khaki Field mechanical is only 5 atm, and it's not until you get to the Field Automatic do you get 10 atm.

  • @scottlynch5804
    @scottlynch5804 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    I love the aesthetics of this watch. It's a great little homage to military field watches. However, Bulova has fallen short on the specs. This style watch and being an automatic is going to appeal to enthusiasts only. It should have a sapphire crystal, a minimum of 50m of water resistance (100m preferred) and 20mm lugs are so much better for strap options. I think money would be better spent on a grey market Hamilton with either an ETA hand wind or automatic movement. As usual, great review Teddy.

    My first automatic was a Bulova back in the mid-70’s and I hold a great affinity for the brand. But, as I watch this I’m wearing a Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical purchased a year or so ago, from an AD, and, for less than $50 more than the price for this piece. The Bulova looks to be a nice watch but at this price it simply doesn’t compare. That said, at $250 this one joins my collection. I enjoy your vids...

    The mineral glass is very vintage looking it really adds to its style,I own the black dial with red it really is a beautiful dial no nonsense but practical along with the subtle brushing of the case.My only criticism would be the thickness but I don’t have a big wrist and it looks great nonetheless.I’ve stuck a geckota leather strap on it and it really is a beautiful watch which is surprising for a field watch!it’s my go to piece for the weekend. I do own more expensive stuff in my collection including Hamilton but this watch is almost an exact copy of the original used in ww2 like the Hamilton so merits the same respect of horological history as a Hamilton.It’s a watch I thought that’s ok I’ll get that and once buying it and seeing it I have thought wow that’s fighting above it’s weight and holding it down…by the way ,not being rude but Hamilton didn’t invent the eta movement that’s a swatch owned movement. The bulova uses a citizen group movement and it’s not eco drive which are good but inappropriate for this watch.

    I have4 or 5 Bulova watches and found while they look expensive, they don't perform like it. Not easy to hand-wind with crowns sliding back in too easily. Power reserve on the Accutron and Accu Swiss appear to be less than 30 hours. Two had to be sent back for warranty repairs. A $1695 list price is silly for a watch that you can buy for less than $500.

I sometimes would gain 50 seconds a day (consistently during the week) That’s insane. I mean, If I’m going to wear a watch - it should be decently consistent with time-keeping. Also, $360 and it doesn’t have an open case back? Additionally, a mineral crystal with terrible loom? Timex has better loom! Bulova has went extremely downhill since their first lunar watch. Mineral glass & 30m WR on a $360 field watch 😆 same problem as with Hamilton,you're paying for the name only.

    A $360 Bulova with a Miyota movement? GTFOOH!! I'll take an Orient Star RE-AU0202N00B for the win! Screw-down crown, display back, in-house movement.
