    just a heads up, peltor comtac downleads are not proprietary, they use a TP-120/U174 style plug. Pretty standard in the military and in aviation.

    I run the comtac III single leadwith a Kenwood u94/A PTT (amplified ptt) and a 48" foldable antenna with a gooseneck adapter. Pretty good for closed comms. Still learning about HAM comms.

    Baofeng should really be making its own headsets, probably will be saving everybody a pretty penny too.

    Technically you need an amp in the circuit as comtacs are low impedence systems and baofengs and other civilian radios are relatively high impedence

    • @waylonk2453

      You're totally right. Additionally, I hear that some baofengs don't have a preamp, so the signal from the peltors to the radio will be wicked quiet. In a radio with a preamp or adjustable gain this should not be a problem since the radio deals with it on the input side of things. The trick is knowing which chinese radios have these features :D

    Not sure if anyone will be able to help. Bought a set of contacts 2s second hand years ago in the military and never used them. They have a weird smaller 6pin plug rather than the standard connector most contacts have. It’s not the standard nato 6 pin that’s on the radios but way smaller. Anyone know what this connector is called so I can try and source an adapter?

    • @jacobjstoffer
      @jacobjstoffer 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      technically you need a ham license either way with the baofeng bc of the power level it transmits at and being capable of going to other freq.

  • @rbollard21
    @rbollard21 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    How is the sound when you talk out because I thought it had to be amplified a certain way that’s why people don’t use the actual pelator ptt and buy a whole new ptt system.

    • @PreparedAirman
      @PreparedAirman  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      So I haven't had any issues. Its slightly quieter then an actual 152 but its not so quiet you can't here anything. Its definitely usable.

    Hey, great content, I watched your Communications/Radios video too. Do you ever have issues with the Kenwood 2-pin having an inconsistent connection with the UV-5R under heavy use? I'm in between getting the BF-F8 or the UV-9R. The BF-F8 is an 8-watt upgraded UV-5R with the Kenwood 2- pin, but the UV-9R has a multi-pin motorola xts-like connector that screws in. Disco32 has ptts for both, but the UV-9R is only about 4-5W over 440. Do you think there is a discernable difference between 4 and 8 watts anyways?

    • @PreparedAirman
      @PreparedAirman  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have had a couple of connectors fail on me before. I would say its common but it does happen. In my understanding wattage increases range but also reduces battery life. So it's a trade off. Talk longer distance for shorter time or talk a shorter distance for longer time.
      I would say it depends on your intended use.

      If your peltors have a single or double down lead attached then you are good to run coms. If you don't have a down lead already attached then you do not have a comms capable unit, to my understanding.

    Do not do business with Disco Tactical! They don’t give a Fu$@ once they have your money.
    I’m new to all the adapters and the different options. I called over the phone to ask for help after the first adapter didn’t fit. Paid shipping to send it back. They sent the wrong adapter and when I called the conversation basically went as follows.
    “Yeah you are past the 30 days from your original purchase and I have plenty of business so fu&$ off”.
    I was in shock. Now I’m out $350 with adapters and wired that don’t fit my Sordins. I emailed too to make sure it wasn’t a fluke. He only responded “your stuff has been delivered”
