Should you install stainless steel brake lines for the Toyota Land Cruiser?

  • I'll probably catch a bunch of crap for talking against the Lord's anointed on this, but it's just not the right fit for me. In this case, Toyota/OEM is king! Slee offered to make an exception to accept an opened return but I'd rather express my opinion without owing any favors.

    Since Clay went to the effort to make a video and explain everything that is wrong with our lines, I would like to add our responses. Obviously everyone needs to evaluate any part they buy and have to be happy with their purchase, but I thought that some clarity on this would help as well.
    Banjo Fitting Location.
    The elbow that Toyota uses is not available to our supplier (which is one of the largest hose manufacturers in the US that produce DOT certified lines). We have enquired about it and they have checked. This is one of those cases where there has to be some compromises with producing aftermarket parts. If exact OE fitment is important to a customer, we will always suggest that you stick with Toyota OE parts.
    Copper Washers
    I am not sure I understand exactly what you are referring to. However it is not uncommon for the OE copper crush washer to be deformed and jammed onto the banjo bolt. The washer we supply are correct for the application and 100% serviceable. We provide the washers as a service but if OE spec is important the washers can be substituted with Toyota parts.
    18mm Wrench
    Again this is similar to the answer on item 1. Also it is not uncommon for aftermarket parts to use fasteners that are not exactly JIS spec.
    Tightness of retaining clip.
    We install these lines in the shop and we have never found this to be a problem.

      Thanks for the response and all reading this comment should know that Slee's customer service is not to be faulted: great communication and upfront in every way.
      As we discussed in our emails back and forth and in the video itself, the "issues" aren't what's wrong, just deviations from strict OEM fitment (which was my eventual preference).

    Hi ... Interesting informative video ... however Hmm *scratch head* its great that you raised those points ... however ...
    1) being braided brake lines - intended to be more heavy duty naturally the fittings such should be more heavy duty in size - this case 18 mm nut.
    2) the fact that the support bracket is tight fitting is a good thing (in my opinion) - means they are well made and secure - stainless steel - vs rubber and aluminium;
    3) copper washers are used because they are meant to absorb of the fitting to give it that secure fit (acts similar to a spring washer) - yours being bent and damage - possible that you over tighten it;
    4) braid brake line - not secured with OEM support bracket comes to oversized lines - made for heavy duty
    Lastly - I am from Australia - off-road and 4 wheel driving is in our core DNA - Toyota Landcruisers 200 series and the Prado (Lexus 460) most popular SUV - usually people do not upgrade to braided brake lines unless they have done some suspension height increase or upgrades to the shocks and springs - otherwise OEM ones are used.
    However - I can not speak for everyone and every case - perhaps this could be a SLEE or car specific issue.
    I have installed many SS braided lines - yes installation slightly different but no issues.

    I believe your complaints are legitimate, but will say that maybe it's a bit unfair to single Slee out. If you want SS lines, I do believe Slee offers one of the best alternatives out there.
    All stainless lines will have similar issues. They are all aftermarket and will never be exact fitment to any vehicle.
    A couple of your specifics:
    1. Copper washer should not jam onto the banjo bolt. That is a definite issue, maybe incorrect size in your kit? Annoying and shouldn't be that way.
    2. Different routing. The OEM sits in the tabs on the caliper to hold in place, and SS does not. However, it is still out of the way and SS is much, much stiffer than the rubber line. There is no risk of it twisting out or moving, as a more flexible rubber line might.
    3. Being US made, i'm willing to bet it's not a 18mm fitting, but a SAE size.
    Another thing you didn't mention is that it's not uncommon for SS lines to leak at the 10mm hardline end, and you have to file the lip of the hardline to fit correctly. The domed seal inside the SS line is slightly different than OEM, so it is sometimes an issue.
    For perfect fitment, OEM is the way. The ends are specific and match perfectly as designed, but that goes with all OEM stuff. Especially Toyota.

      Agreed that if you want OEM fitment, Toyota is the way to go. I just expected that Slee, being the best of the best for Land Cruiser aftermarket, there would have been fewer deviations from OEM.

    Just wanted to say thank you again! I just went back to get the part link for the upper control arm ball joints from one of your previous videos. Now that spring is here in the northeast, I can get some work done on the LC. I'll be changing ball joints, shocks and a tie rod end in the near future. Hope everything is going great for you and your family. Take care.

    I recently did replaced my rear brakes and went with oem lines over the slee. Glad I did bc I wouldn’t want those weird and random issues to rear up down the road. And I did happen to get some TRD rear pads to go along with new calipers.

    When I replaced my brake hoses, I considered aftermarket braided ones, then I thought that considering the Toyota ones had been on there for 20 odd years already, new OEM ones would probably work just perfectly and I was sure that they'd fit....
    OEM where possible is where I'm going when it comes to maintenance parts.

    I was wondering about these, thinking I would get a better pedal, and having a 99, it wouldn't hurt to replace them anyways, but now I'm not sure for sure, slee does some weird stuff, again for sure, thanks for making these videos !! Slee should check the products before making them available to sell to public! With my 99 I always go stock for parts like these.

    Problem I'm noticing, atleast on my 80, is the old brake lines are becoming frayed and look like they are going to brake in half in just a few years. With these stainless steel lines from Slee, this is not an issue.

    I had a similar issue with their SS 4" extended kit on my 80 series, and definitely felt the same way about how visually they looked great, but installation wasn't as seemless as I'd hoped. In the end I kept the lines to get on with my project, but have since repurchased OEM 4" extended lines to replace them at a later date.

      I’ll do a video installing mine on my 80. I’m more worried about the rusty lines on the rig. These look a lot like the extended lines that were made for my truck. Impression I got standing in the warehouse was Slee has everything made for them. It would be nice to figure out who’s making them for umm. Could probably build them out how you wanted. My race bike stuff was like this. Can’t be all that many being made here.
