    An overlock stitch is a great way to finish the edges of fabric to keep it from fraying. The most common way to do this method is by using a serging machine, but it can be done by hand - and we will show you how.

      OMG, me too! I’m 72 and I can’t tell you how much I wish the internet had been around when I was young. So many things I couldn’t do back then because I had no one to ask. And also, the times have changed too. I’m just starting cross stitch. When I was young, there were very few supplies or good designs.

    I have some old jeans that the hems on the legs are starting to fray and an old sweatshirt that the cuffs are fraying, this looks like a good stitch to mend them both. Thank you for sharing this.

    Is the stitch being demonstrated also known as the blanket stitch? And at 2:16, there is another stitch underneath the stitch that you showed. Is it possible to sew that stitch by hand?

    • @figeepoet

      Yes 😊 I learned it as 'blanket stitch' ☺️
      That one underneath just looks to me like more blanket stitch, but with the stitches much closer together 🤔😊

  • @despaahana
    @despaahana 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Will making the stitches closer together make the fabric less liable for fraying?

    • @tic857
      @tic857 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      If your fabric is very fine you'd be looking to tuck the edges in before doing any edge stitching. Closer does work but generally the blanket stitch is pretty good at controlling fraying even when spaced out . It becomes more of aesthetic. You can go closer to have a cleaner look but it takes much longer with more thread.

    How is this any different from blanket or hemstitch? An overlock stitch requires two needles.

    • @onlinefabricstore
      @onlinefabricstore  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This stitch is also commonly know as a blanket stitch. There are many types of stitches that could be called overlock stitches from a broad definition. This is the most basic hand sewing version but it also refers to the complex stitching by sergers or overlock machines which often use 2 needles.

    That's actually blanket stitch and not overlock stitch, overlock stitch creates Vs along the edge, it can also be done by hand but is quite different that that.
