My boss and I have been using these for a while, I didn't know what the 4th mode was for till now, thanks for reading the manual for me.
They are a great tool, I highly recommend them.
I am in my second year of my electrical apprenticeship and have noticed I’m already ahead of many journeymen just for the fact that I read the directions and instructions for equipment.
That 4th mode is kinda stretching it for them. I think its pointless and just means one more technical thing that can go wrong. 2 speeds is good enough

yeah, it was a bit baffling to me, too, when I got an m-18 surge last year.
I have the older version of this and it's an absolute BEAST it's so practical that I rarely have to use my m18 Fuel version.
I can only imagine how good this new one is I'm drooling right now just looking at it.
It has replaced my M18 entirely. I've never ran into anything this couldn't do, but if I do one day that's when it's time to pull out the mid torque because it's not gonna be a screw, it's gonna be a large lag bolt
99 dollars right now on Home depot. Tool, 1 battery and charger and case. Not sure how long it would last. Best deal I've ever seen for a new tool like this

The first HD said they were only available online and they were getting rid of the M12 in favor of the M18. I called BS, went to a second HD and got the 99 dollar kit with a military discount. Thanks for the tip!

I got this as a kit with the high speed ratchet, a winning combination.
I just bought the impact driver/hammer drill kit a couple days ago. The m12 line is for sparkies that love themselves. I can just holster the driver in a tool pouch, and can barely feel it. My m18 tools are just for when I'm doing roughs, now. They're too heavy and awkward hanging from a tool belt/pouch to justify carrying around for trim jobs. And, the m12 versions are still surprisingly powerful for how light and small they are. Love them. I didn't always understand the point of 12v tools, but I kind of think they should be the standard, now. I almost never need the full power that 18v offers, unless we're talking about stuff like circular saws, so for most jobs, it's not just overkill, it's bad for your hips.

I really like my Surge. same action as an impact driver with half the noise.
Yes, the Surge is very nice as well.
The surge impacts are nice. The main thing I love about them is that they operate more like pneumatic impacts, in that they engage the impacts basically once you start driving the fastener, so it's a much smoother, more consistent feel, and less likely to lock up, and start stripping out the head of the fastener, like normal impacts sometimes will.
@@jackxv that is more about specific models than about the drive tech. the only real difference I noticed between my traditional impact and the surge was the noise, and they were both milwaukee.
@@kenbrown2808 I'm talking about both being Milwaukee, too. I used to install the roofs on mobile homes, and when we built FEMA houses, we would have to drive hundreds of 4-1/2" spax screws into the gables of the roofs. My gen3 would do it faster, but since it didn't engage the impacts until it near the end of driving the screws, the screws would often bind, and the head would get stripped out, and I'd just to break that screw off, and put in another one. When I tried using the surge, I didn't run into that problem, anymore, because the impacts come in as soon as there's resistance.
Granted, those screws were also shit, so it's not a problem that everyone is going to encounter. But, in a situation where you can't just tell your employer to stop being a cheapskate, having a tool that can baby the material you're working with definitely helps.
I have the previous model, but since i'm a tool freak, i also bought the m12 surge and since then, i just stopped using my normal m12 impact. Surge is smoother.
And much quieter!

Dewault had their chance but we all got fed up with the battery and Performance of it. I roughed out an entire home with a Milwaukee gun. No more angle drill!

I had a older version of the M12 impact but when I tried to crank down on rusted pole light bolts it wouldn't make them budge. It looks like a nice backup impact driver though.
12 volt, from anyone, isn't good for that.
@@saulgoodman2018 my M-18 sheared my socket adaptor on rusted hardware.
@@saulgoodman2018 my M18 made quick work of them, oh and I'm talking about the U bolts that fasten the lights to the pole that's at 90 degrees from its base towards the road.
Honestly, I know my m18 impact is plenty strong for most things, but once we're talking about rusted bolts, I generally get out the impact wrench. I'm not trying to torture the components in the collet and anvil mechanism, just because the motor is technically strong enough. Lol.
Would really like to see how it does installing drywall. My gen 3 M18 does not begin to impact until the screw is already sunk too far. Older gen 2 M18s have a better feel for doing more delicate tasks like drywall.

What I'm interested in is how many screws can you shoot with a 2.0ah or 2.5ah HO battery before the battery runs out? There should be a test because I think there are a lot of people interested in this issue
ALOT, seriously, you could go all day long with a few batteries. I have 5 or so, so I'm never worried but with just 2 you can go along while

That would be interesting to see. My money would be on Milwaukee, though. I haven't used Dewalt's 12v tools, but I've used both of their 18v (20v max) tools, and Milwaukee pretty easily outclasses them, there.
@@jackxv I think you are right. Milwaukee M12 tools do outperform the Dewalt Xtreme tools, but the Xtreme tools are lighter, more comfortable to hold, and can handle 95% of the jobs I need it for. If I need more horsepower, I’ll break out the M18 fuel tools.
@@MrStanwyck Same. My m18 stuff is only for when I really need that extra horsepower. I don't know how comfortable the xtreme stuff is, but I actually like that the handles on m12 tools are a little fatter. It's a taste thing, I guess.
