  • Together with Robert D. Kaplan, De Balie will discuss the relationship between the West and Russia. The war in Ukraine shows how important both ideology and power relations are. What is exactly the current relationship between NATO, EU, and Russia? And the bigger question: how do we deal with Russia?

    DEALING WITH RUSSIA
With this four-part program series, we want to provide in-depth analysis of current affairs and facilitate nuanced debate, thus making complex material accessible. How have Russian-Western relations changed since the collapse of the Soviet Union, how does Russia view its relations with former Soviet States, and what motivates the EU, NATO and the USA?

I've just come across your channel, and it is a shame I didn't find it earlier. You invite some of the most interesting speakers from the globe. Great conversation and very interesting to hear questions answered by one of the US' most influential foreign policy writers.

With cost of “black gold” at 15-23 dollars per barrel, the USSR economy collapsed, and the sovok itself collapsed, and the "golden" horde ("russia") budget can only be fulfilled only with oil price at $ 42.4 and higher

Putin changed the Russian Army into a Russian Legion with combat troops signing contracts much along the lines of the French Foreign Legion but much shorter terms. Legions are great for small actions, but invading a nation and occupying it requires an Army. A legion is not up to the task.

Now that's t.v. worth watching. Only two suggestions: 1. Lose the "serious" reading from the unknown actress 2. Resurrect Patrice O'neil and include him on the panel. If resurrection is not an option Bill Burr is also a strong commentator.

It is not a question of "how to deal" with Russia, but simply the question how we should listen and try to understand Russia. And then ofcourse; To take what they say seriously. Non in the West did, but Russia doesn't bluff. We got what we deserved, because of our ideologicaly possesed, totaly insane and even childish "leaders" in the West

These De Balie guys quoted somebody as say "Putin was a nasty person". Well you can also refer to Biden and his "crime family" in nasty dealings in Ukraine when he was VP. When a journal goes down this personality bashing route, the conversation loses all analytic value and you can expect to learn nothing objective from it.

    1917 defeated by Germany
1920 defeated by Poland, Finland, Estonia and all Baltic states

Sorry Robert Kaplan, Putin say publically right in front of John Maccain as far back as 2008 (in Romania if I recalled) that Ukraine being in NATO was not acceptable to Russia. Putin had not evolved from that position.

He is a real hypocrite, leaving out a lot of facts and twisting the truth. Putin was a very "nasty" person? How about Cheney, Albright, Hillary, Rumsfeld, Rice, Sleepy Joe, etc. etc. They expect Putin to be nice to them when they have shown how nasty and aggressive they have been and still are??? Putin so bad and these dudes so so good! They are just upset because at every turn Putin has check-mated them. He admitted that he couldn't imagine that Putin would take military action against Ukraine! He must have advised his masters wrongly then.
