What do you think every bike should come with? Share your thoughts below! 👇
Every bike or frame sold regardless of brand should include at least one spare hanger and a clear description including model number of the hanger. With UDH this will become less of an issue but any bike not using UDH should have this as standard and there should be no guessing on the part of the owner which hanger they need.
Excellent idea! Even stamping the product number into the hanger would be a huge help 🙏
I have the luxury of a large frame with a bent top tube (Knolly Warden). Previously I have just used a hip bag that stored all my tools but recently I picked up a Granite bottle cage mount and paired it with a OneUp 100cc pump.
The bottle cage mount is an extended aluminum plate that attaches via the bottle cage bolts. I am able to strap tire levers and a TPU tube (in an air pods case) on the lower portion with a Lezyne bottle cage to the upper portion. I can fit a 750ml bottle on this setup.
The OneUp 100cc pump has the EDC V2 tool and plug / pliers kit stashed internally. The pump is also connected to the bike via the water bottle bolts and sits under the Granite plate.
Boost Thru-Axles, UDH, Standard 73mm Threaded BB, 31.6 seatpost, external routing...
...but here's my big one: SHORTER SEAT TUBES !!! TALLER STACK !!!
Oh yeah, and 203mm rotors should be the standard on every bike both front and back.
yep, 150 dropper as minimum, 200 standard: if I wanna drop that saddle, I mean I WANNA DROP THAT SADDLE
This. All of this. Especially threaded BBs and external cable/hose routing!
I felt that "SHORTER SEAT TUBES". I was going to buy a Radon Swoop Carbon and I didn't because of that. 520mm on the XL. That's nuts.
With the exception of short travel trail bikes and XC rigs, 203 post mounts really should be on any bike say with >150mm travel. It’s one of the first upgrades I see on ‘all-mountain’ trail bikes in the bike shop.
I had to change my 203 back disk for a 180. I am light, no need for a big disc in the back
Frame protection already installed, throw in extra alternative decal colours too
Bikes should come with a lower price as standard👍
I personally like internal routing IF it's tube-in-tube and not through the headset, especially for the derailleur and dropper, because how often are you really changing those cables? Transition does it best, with an external rear brake and internal everything else.
As for stuff that should be more common than it is, the biggest one for me is 34.9 droppers; they're way stronger for longer (200mm+) posts, and they can be easily shimmed down to accommodate legacy 30.9/31.6 posts.
Also, I'd love to see more downtube frame storage, and not just on CF frames, as Specialized and Trek have already proven it's totally doable with AL frames.
Strap a water bottle on the bottom of your down tube, been doing it for years, just let air out of fork and find good placement. Get a one up edc pump with tools. I wrap rain gear around my waist. Clif bars in pocket.
Yep, I use One UP EDC pump with tools inside pump, and use a seperate mount one each bike. Just put the pump on what ever bike I am using at the time. All of my bikes have a quick link taped to brake line, as mutliple different chains being used depending on the bike
Nothing makes me happier than external cables. And every bike should use udh
I just love listening to Anna and Owen’s comments on bike tech!!! Very pleasant show!
Space for two bottles is a must
2:50 I don't care about bottle cage as I exclusively use hydration backpack with a 3L Hydrapak. I prefer to use backpack, to have all stuff I need with me, and never take anything out, apart from camera and tripod when grocery shopping. I have an Evoc Explorer Pro 30L so fit all I need, plus a full frame camera with lens and a Peak design Tripod, and even room for more.
I got a Geometron G1, but you can buy plastic Fidlock mounts that camp on the top tube, down tube. Nicolai did not want to compromise tube strength for bottle mounts. If the tube diameter is the same it can work on other bikes too. If you want to use any type of bottle you can use a TWIST uni connector so you attached the twist system to the bottle of choice, it uses Boa to secure the bottle.
Handlebar mounted bottle cages exist for regular bottles. Dual handlebar mounted bottle holders exist, you can have two bottles. Easier to reach than down on top of under the down tube.
More fun,more compfort,less competiton:)❤
Internal routing, standardized upper ports with universal grommets and larger lower ports to ease routing with standardized lower grommets.
Specialized SWAT stands for "Storage, Water, Air, and Tools" and I want to say that it started in 2017.
Instead of stretching a 26" tube DH or not, the one tube for everything should be a 29" tube. Need to fit it into a smaller wheel? Just roll a section of the tube into itself like a sock. You can get it to fit even in a kid's 16" bike if you had to, and the rubber doesn't have to be overstretched, especially where the valve is patched in and doesn't stretch the same amount and ends up looking like a balloon animal.
Great idea! But sounds very fiddly 👍
34.9mm seat tube. The larger diameter allows them to make better dropper posts that don’t rattle.
Forks should standardize on the Rock Shox “Torque Caps” standard.
Every bike should have a built-in hiding spot for an AirTag.
does this affect frame geometry such as tire clearance in smaller sizes?
its 1.5mm, seat tubes should probably be farther forward anyway, a mountain bike only uses its seat when climbing or accelerating@@philhunt1442
14oz wattle bottle. Downtube (towards the front) bottle cage mounts (along with the regular downtube mounts).
UDH, and well sealed internal down tube storage is a must for me as well as tube in tube cable routing. Swat stands for storage, water, air, tools.
Ergon grips and dropper post on every MTB pls
SWAT stands for "Storage, Water, Air, Tools." It was introduced by Specialized in 2012
Can I just say, I love this newer guy! He’s great, and very knowledgeable (dare I say better than the H guy)! And the whole thing feels right. Cheers 🥳✌🏼❤️🍻
UDH is a must in my opinion and please please sue Acros at the hague for the cable routing through the stem.Thank you!
i would generally have a coupla mountain dwarves running along behind me carrying all my gear... they make tea too..
I certainly agree with the comments about Universal Derailleur Hangers, and threaded bottom brackets. Only interested in internal cable routing if the frame comes with internal tubing for the cables. Not a fan of the fiddly work using magnets.
Looking further into the future, and because I absolutely love the Rohloffs I have on both my bikes, I would like to predict that internal gearboxes will become a new industry standard.
Cool video specialized on board tool set wasn't it in 95? Storage, water, air, tools I just know this with my mates bike with a door in the carbon frame but like
You said at the start all bikes need this wee door or on board tool storage definitely!
Miss my old pace 303 that was stolen of me 4 years ago loved it ran 27.5 wheels good bike
I love a press in bb because I never mess with it and I take it in to get it fixed it changed if I ever need. Seriously not a big issue. On my bmx bikes all of my threaded bb cone loose and the threads are never the same after multiple changes.
6:33 Some have issues with the ergonomics of this remote and prefer the previous remote. I've not tried it. But I see why.
#GMBNtech if you have internal cable routing, bikes should come with some housing damper. Such as Jagwire internal housing damper foam. #silentbikes
Yes internal cables, but it’s easy when they all come out under the bb.
Quiz answer: Specialized SWAT stands for, storage water, air and tools.
All bikes should come with UDH, a sandwich box/pouch, space for a LARGE water bottle, and internally routed cables (with guides) are a must. I bought a park tool kit for my old trek remedy and it was infuriating, so glad my pivot doesn't have that issue anymore. also, I think all bikes should come with adjustable brake mounts (or supplied with different sizes) for the off chance you want a larger/smaller disk
Frame only options are preferred by me, but often find the price excessive when you compare to a complete bike build with that same frame.
This is a bit of a weird list… maybe depends on price point. Just bought a gravel bike for focus on one day events and races. My must haves were 1x, tubeless & hydraulic brakes. It was amazing how many bikes didn't come with these and I had to keep going up the price point to get all 3
SWAT = Storage Water Air Tools, it was first released in november 2017, it's basically ways of storing water/tools and such on your bike/you
No pf BB. Make frames that don't need separate hangers. The holy Grail would be internal gears like the pinion gear box which takes a lot of maintenance out and makes the drivetrain nearly bomb proof.
Thank you
I’m trying to find a 500ml ish stainless steel bottle for my bike but they seem to be impossible to find my 750mil bottle doesn’t fit my new bike because it hits the shock.
Have a look at Bivo bottles
Thru axles front and back. Most new mountain bikes with an MSRP under $1500 come with quick release axles. I would much rather have thru axles instead of internal cable routing. Most bikes over $500 come equipped with internal cable routing.
Would gave liked to see pace use square tubing on their frame.
is the new pinion electronic shifting gearbox for non ebikes going to be the end of the deraliur, Intrested to hear weight comparisons with deraliur drive trains and measure efficiency of the system. keep up!
All bikes, no matter the manufacturer or price range should come with boost 148 through axle prep on the frame.
Every fork should have a marking on he steerer showing the front centre
UDH on all gravel bikes too!
Question: as a heavy rider just between 2 sizes. I can take both height wise. Should I go larger or smaller ? Does it matter?
Would a larger frame take the beating better over time?
Every MTB bike should come with a dropper and/or seat tube water bottle mounts that allow a dropper - some low-end stuff f***s it up.
All new trail and Enduro bikes, forks, and frames should have their brake caliper mounts for 203mm rotors. Having to use adapters is annoying, and 203mm rotors should be the minimum for modern Trail and Enduro applications anyway.
DH cake sounds steezy
SWAT stands for Storage, Water, Air, Tools
Mudguards? My Trek Roscoe comes with Fox Rhythm 36 fork and I can’t find a mudguard suitable!! Some people suggest some models, and then other people tell me no they don’t fit!
Mudhhugger Evo will fit, it comes with mounting holes for Fox 36 and Rockshox forks. But for EXT ERA you have to make the holes bigger, I did that with a packaging knife.
Decent brakes! Would rather have a budget drivetrain with a decent set of brakes than a low spec brake set with a mid level tribe train! But following that thought I’d actually rather see more manufacturers offering customers spec choice we can choose! So we can decide where to prioritise the money etc!
I’d say that Tubeless set up needs to come as Standard… 😎
Most bikes nowadays come tubeless as standard, just without the sealant! But that's for a good reason, the bikes tend to be in storage for a while so if the sealant was added at the factory it would be solid by the time it get's to you 🤙
I just much prefer the water pack than the water bottle. But for convenience, water bottle is the way to go.
a reasonable pricetag should be on any bike.
UDH = yes, bidons = don't care, onboard tool storage = don't care.
I wish all bike came with the possibility to convert them into 2 by groupsets.
I just don't get the trend of 1× and I fear my next bike will only have one chainring because the industry impose it
Storage Water Air Tools (SWAT), and 2015?
External cable routing.
Forks and rear shock should come with remote lock ouy switches a lot of new bike's don't last year.
Some people aren't a fan of the extra cable but on an XC bike it is very useful!
I have a 2022 Specilzed Enduro Expert and It has a water bottle storage and tools, but I hate the water bottle. I would rather wear a camelback. But I love you guys!!
Swat= storage,water,air & tools.
Specialized's SWAT is Storage Water Air Tools - 2016 for Apparel and I think the first bike was the Stumpy?
SWAT: Storage, Water, Air, Tools
A drivetrain that isn't SRAM SX.
All of that
Long travel dropper post (or at least enough room to install one). I ant understand M size bikes (that's for around 180cm height for most brands) coming with 150 or less post travel. Some bikes won't even have space to fully instert 150 dropper. I am running 210 one up and will not get new bike that will make me downgrade that more than 2cm.
Lower price tags
uncut steerer tubes
Storage Water Air Tools (SWAT)
Every MTB should come with:
UDH
Thru Axles
Boost
Tubeless Ready Wheels
Everything else is just being nit picky 😂
Many strong points here. I would add some weird future tech: Square seat tubes (for square seat posts), frame integrated dropper posts to save 200 grams, pressurized top tubes for tire inflation, air pump functionality for dropper posts, and more controversially, gearboxes and belt drives like my bike.
Storage, Water, Air, Tools
Specialized S.W.A.T.
Around 2013?
Bikes in general should be equipped with better brakes! It's outrageous how much bikes cost these days and manufacturers still equip the bikes with cheaper brake models... There is no reason bikes don't have to top brake models starting from a certain price-range
I want every screw to be a T25 or T20.
Have a look at the new Intense, as the designer was an Ex-Pro mechanic he made sure all the bolts were the same if not similar!
I can’t fit a water bottle on my bike and carry a pack on every ride. Unfortunate.
Even bigger Internal frame storage would be better. Make that down tube larger for more storage.
Every bike should come with an adjustable head set. The Stumpjumper Evo has the best example of this.
Just wear a small ruck sack type thing. i got everything in my camelpack my bike is 100% in order before i ride and 99.% of the time nothing goes wrong really just prep and bike maintenace i hate drinking a shitty dirty water bottle thats got grit and mud all over.i get it maybe on narathon xc rides maybe but it aint a big deal like people seem to make like crying over 2 bottle mounts on a bike
I'm gonna get roasted for this by the Mountain Bike community for my idea of what every bike should be coming with, but I'm ready for it. 😂 KICKSTANDS! Yeah even big box Walmart brand bike companies are even stopping their installation of them, but I still think center mounted kickstands should make a comeback or at least an option because riders shouldn't have to spend extra money to store their bike because it can't stand up on it's own like more expensive (or just as expensive) motorcycles. If safety really is an issue like I've read, then make them easily removable. "So you mean to tell me this $10,000 bike can't even stand even on it's own when a human isn't on it? Wooooowww...."
Yes. Standardized and toolless removal.
i'd love a kickstand. my last mtb had one n it was super handy.. never mind them that judge.. they'd only be secretly jealous!!
I have never had a moment where I wished I had a kickstand. Running the risk of peglegging a corner is not high on my list of desires.
Its a matter of safety for you and basically for the frame, its possible to stuck somewhere - roots-rock etc and crack it...
You even get Cat3 rated stands, for example by Scott which fit into a mounting at the rear which was made for that. This kickstand don't fold down on trails.
I'm not sure if they offer that too for enduro.
_UNCONDITIONAL_ _WARRANTY_ - that is what too few bikes have now. It may be for only a year or two, but must not be in the way "send us a frame, we will have a look and probably sign you off a discount voucher for new purchase"
Nah. I’m not interested in paying a higher purchase price to subsidize other people who crash or damage their bike and want “warranty”.
@@GHinWI problem is, you already are. Replacement cost accounted into price is a thing. Difference being it goes to legal department instead of actual replacement.
Besides, crashing an MTB is part of its daily use. It ain't a commuter
@@feedbackzaloop : I’m saying I don’t want to pay for other irresponsible people. I take care of my sh!t. If there’s an overly-generous warranty, that means they’ve added more to the price to pre-pay for the claims.
@@GHinWI OK boomer. If you consider intended use irresponsible, suit yourself then.
Meh, on the water bottles. I honestly couldn't care less. I guess it's a nicety for XC racers or Enduro racers. But, I personally like to keep all the stuff off of the bike. I've never understood the practice of counting grams, then slapping a bunch of crap to the bike. It makes no sense.
but where dya put ya whiskey then.. sod the water!
@@fugoogle9757I put it in my belly of course.
This is absolutely the truth....and to be honest anyone going for distance in the heat need way more hydration than a couple water bottles provide.
After 20k everything you had on you, backpack, water, tools, start to make their annoying presence, after 40k its not comfort at all, so, if everything is on the bike and not on your back is extra comfort for long xc rides, from personal view ofc, ✌️🤟😃
@@manitolas it's never been an issue for me
Is this an Orbea advert???
Orbea are one of their sponsers...
I despise the phrase " entry level" 😡
I feel like the industry is pushing everyone to go upto 29" and I still love having 27.5" front and rear instead of this mixed wheel option all new bikes are being released with.
I though we were over this water bottle talk once we entered the 2k's! Sorry, nothing worse than grabbing a dusty or
muddy bottle and trying to pull the top open with your teeth.. 🤮
Every bike should have external cable routing.
Noooooi
No thanks.
...and a reasonable, realistic price tag.
Every single trail/enduro mtb should now have;
Intelligent internal routing that doesn’t require internal routing tools/coat hangers & doesn’t go around the BB she’ll.
Room for 1 bottle. minimum
UDH
Boost spacing
Threaded BB
Sensible linkages with decent sized bearings
Absolutely NO cables going through the headset bearing (absolute deal breaker) retarded design.
And sorry, but if your bike is missing any of these things then I’m looking elsewhere. Simple as that.
