w/ autumn setting in (mid 40's)... he was a lot like cash or even frost.... wrote what on the surface seem relatively simple lyrics. yet symbolically laden w/ so much depth.

Saw him in 1977 at the Derby Eve Jam in Louisville KY. During the break in this song when there is a long pause, I jumped up and yelled “I LOVE YOU BOB SEGER!” It was very loud in that quiet hall and people cheered and when he got done with the song, he said “I love you too Louisville” and the crowd went crazy again! It's crazy because as a teenager when this came out, even though Bob was describing all that sexual tension, and being devil may care, we all felt it was more of a
cautionary tale of "Autumn Closing In". It was strange to hear the song back then looking forward, and now at 60 with Autumn Arrived. The song is timeless.
"Against The Wind" we run the race, we have to finish our course.

You do know that Motown refers to detorit, MI, right?
Born on May 6, 1945 in Detroit and raised in Ann Arbor, Seger's interest in music was inspired by his father, who started his son's musical trajectory by teaching him to play the ukulele.

All time classic song. And yes it is about the literal Night Moves that the young folk working and practicing in the backseat and trusty woods... But it is also about looking back on your life and remembering those times. So the lines about Autumn closing in are also about a man approaching or in middle age looking back on those times when you just didn't seem to have as much to lose. Lines like that are what make Bob such a masterful storyteller in addition to the class A instrumental musicianship and performance.
And soulful is a perfect word to describe his voice. Takes em to church at the end!

I love how the seasons are a metaphor for his lifetime. In the beginning, you're thinking it's just a story about having fun with his girl in summertime. But by the end with the slow part and all the 'remembers', you realize he's an old man nostalgically replaying in his mind his youthful exploits, as 'autumn' closes in.... As you do. Perfectly capturing of both stages of life.

This is a story of how it was from mid fifties to late seventies . This is how we had to roll , cause taking your girl up to your room was as taboo as the thoughts you had in your head ! Parking under the full moon , going to the drive-in and have to leave before the second movie got half way through , to get your girl home , before her dad came looking for you . Great times and so innocent learning without any clues . Good job guys !

Summertime is a metaphor for our teenage years. With Autumn closing in is referring to our adult years. As a teenager " we don't seem to have as much to lose" is referring to the responsibility of adulthood. When the song slows down in the middle, I think he's reflecting and feeling sad about how life goes so fast

One of my all time favorites. Nobody is a better story teller than Bob Seger. Everybody remembers their teenage yrs with your best girl practicing your night moves. Its one of those Timeless songs. You can walk into any dive bar in America and drop a quarter in the juke box and play Seger and I promise you you will not be the only one singin.

I saw Seger at a place in Flint MI called Sherwood Forrest in 1968. It warms my heart to see a younger generation appreciate him too.

This song is about the seasons of your life. When you are in your teens/ 20's you are in the summer of your life. As you get older going into middle age at some point you realize you are getting older. That is the thunder. Then you start thinking about dying. "How far off I sat and Wondered." That's autumn closing in. This song is about just sitting back and remembering your life and the experiences you had. At that point, you just don't seem to have as much to lose.

The first time I heard this song was in the animated movie "American Pop" (1981 -- for adults, not children) and never ever forgot it. ("I remember, I remember.) It's about the rise (and fall) of a music idol. Have loved Bob Segar ever since. That piano gets to me every time I hear it and I start to play my air piano and chair dancing.

I'm always amazed at the way young people want to classify every song/singer into a specific "genre". Good songwriting comes from the heart, doesn't it? Kinda puts the technical stuff aside when inspiration enters the picture.

It would have be hard in the mid to late 80s to find a southern boy that didn't know Bob Seger, CCR, Alabama and George Straight. The rock songs and country songs crossed over each other.🎶
