It's a very visible color, especially during winter season. And if I get a daugther in the not too distant future, she'll have a lot of pink knives to pick from. ;)
I've only just ordered a ULB 3V green linen w/red liners standard grind from DLT . Looking forward to it arriving of course but these videos are making the wait a bit easier ….. Haha . Coolest dog man ! Great knife collection !
The feathering is dependent on the micro bevel on the edge. It's tricky and I use a power leather strop wheel to make the changes. A fat convex edge works best. I like those knives
Thank you! I'm always happy to be of service. Both the ULB and the Mini-Aurora are fantastic little knives, in their own respective ways. Oh, and Haglöfs Rugged II Mountain Pants are among my very favorite pants for all seasons of the year. I do have a few other brands I enjoy, but these are among my favorite ones. I should maybe make a video with all the different types of outdoor pants that I own. Could be interesting! Have a great day!

Have you seen the new dlt exclusive bushcraft scout in magnacut? I was able to grab one myself and it is super thin and slicey I think even with a dull edge it'd still cut better than a thick blade with a razors edge lol
That was a great review, Fredrik. I've always been a big fan of full height (full flat grind) grind blades. It's interesting how often I see people that are big scandi grind proponents being surprised and grudging admit that the full flat grind works better for tasks that a knife is supposed to be doing....cutting things. If you're concerned about blade strength, then I realize a scandi ground blade is stronger because there's more metal. But for cutting, like you said, a full height ground blade is slicier. Hope Bolt enjoyed his run in the forest!
Thank you, Rick! I can see the pros and cons of FHG, especially on a thin blade like the ULB. I'm happy to own both versions, and tbh, I'm not too concerned about the blade strength myself, since I know how I intend to use this specific model. All in all; I've got to say that the ULB is a fantastic little knife!
A better way to strike the ferro rod is to hold the knife blade down in the Tinder steady, then using the top spine of the knife, you position the ferro rod on top, and pull the rod towards you leaving the knife still. This will throw the sparks right into the wood without knocking it over.
For all intents and purposes the Mini Kephart is pretty much like a FHG ULB. Pretty much identical in size (a bit more blade length on the MK). I have both an ULB and an MK, and mostly EDC the MK (in the ULB sheath - just slips into a front pocket). Fantastic slicer. Just pointing this out in case someone who'd like a FHG ULB can't find one.
I don't own any knives in the BRK Kephart-series, although I'm thinking of pulling the trigger on a Kephart 4V (5") and Mini-Kephart (3V). What made me unsure about the BRK Kephart-series, is the "non-contoured" handle. Also, the 4V-version may be a tad bit long for my taste with a blade as thin as it is. Also, I'd like it in 3V instead of 4V. Then again, there are a few Kepharts (in 3V and CPM-154) on the BRK Production Schedule for 2018, so I'll try them out for sure this year. The handle will be the most interesting part for me, personally. I do believe the BRK Kepharts to be AMAZING slicers.
The MK is not a big knife (obviously) - the different handle shape is a non-issue in practice; if anything, the MK handle fills the hand better than the ULB, having a bit more volume. Both are 3V, same blade thickness and height, with the advantage of the MK blade being 4 or 5 mm longer. More straight edge vs. belly portion as well. Like I said, the MK is my preferred EDC right now...I'd recommend it over the ULB, nice as that is. JMHO
I'm even more intrigued by the Mini-Kephart now! I have heard a lot of good things about both the Mini, and the larger size ones. I'll see if I can find a nice Mini to order in my next batch of knives.
If you do get an MK, I'll look forward to your review here - always appreciated. One more thing, though - the sheath my MK (actually two I own) came with is a lot more 'clunky' than it really needs to be. That's why I carry it in the ULB sheath. If you have the option when ordering, ask for the ULB type sheath...hope that makes sense, just look at the sheath options before ordering. Don't know why BRK sell a 4 ounce knife with an 8 ounce sheath (generally speaking), but they they tend to do that, if you know what I mean...
I also have a few ULB's, one with a FHG. I also have two Mini-Kepharts. I agree that the MK actually fills the hand a bit more (although I actually rounded and thing the butt-end of the my MK's for more comfort both in hand and in the pocket. I prefer the looks of the ULB but the MK actually works slightly better for me in use. The best thing is they are just so damn light to carry :) Enjoy your knives Gentlemen...
Great video my friend. You have a gorgeous dog. You’ll have to check out someway videos I have a big white dog as well as a small German Shepherd. The big one is an Anatolian shepherd but she’s white. I love all those knives. I have the Bushcrafter and the Aurora I don’t have the minis in either one of those. I just got a gun Gunny Vortex. Might just be the one I got but I think the tip is so delicate that if I get it near anything hard it’s going to snap off. Luckily I don’t use my name since prybars. Be blessed my friend. You live in a beautiful country. Do everything you can to hang onto it. John
Thank you! Bolt is my best friend and my number one forest companion. ;) I'll be sure to check some of your videos out! Seeing some outdoor action combined with both dogs and knives is always very enjoyable. Wishing you all the best!
Thanks for the video. I'm always interested in the topic of blade geometry vs feather-sticking. IMO feather-sticking is a core technique in all of bushcrafting. Bark River has an ever-growing collection of small knives (I just took delivery of a Woodland Special in Cru-wear yesterday). I do have ULBs and mini-kephart -- but not yet a mini-aurora. I'm interested in discussion of any/all of the mini Bark River knives vs feather-sticking.
I'm 100% sure we'll see an upcoming run this year. I also know that the Bushcrafter 3V will be made in the near future, which might be an interesting model to check out. I know I'll get one.
I know I'm super late but do you notice any damage to the edge of the full height grind ulb due to there being less material behind the edge vs the scandivex
Hey Junior, No worries, and by now I've gotten to put my FHG ULB to A TON of use - so in that regard, your timing is actually pretty good! I can report that I've had zero issues with the edge. It has hold up great, despite being put to some serious use from time to time. Then again, CPM-3V is one tough steel!
@@PinkG10 good to kno about the fhg I cant agree more about the 3v I love that steel I've been on the edge of sending my bushcrafter 2 in to bring the grind up to almost a fhg but was worried about not having enough meat behing the edge but I feel alot better about it now
To be fair to the Aurora, the first two knives had every advantage in terms of the grain, whereas the Aurora had the worst angles in the grain to contend with. Every feather would have been harder to initiate, more chattery to cut, and wanted to snap off at the end, being unsupported.
I know that the Mini-Aurora doesn't look that great in this video, despite being a fantastic little knife. Even so, there IS, imo, a difference between the ULB (regardless of grind) and the Mini-Aurora. The Mini-Aurora is one of my favorite (small) blades, I even have three of that model, but the ULB does outperform it in certain wood tasks.
Is the ULB with the Full Height Grind a special order as I do not see it listed by either Knives Ship Free of DLT? Nice demonstration in cold, snowy conditions.
Thank you! The dealers had a few FHG ULB's when they were released a few weeks ago, but you can always buy a "regular" one and request it to be HFG (or just a somewhat higher grind etc.). Still, the "regular" ULB is fantastic as it is. The FHG is just a tad bit better at slicing.
Nothing more fun than running around in the woods with your best friend. I'll be doing the same tomorrow with my best pal, Sunny. All the best to you.
Indeed! I hope you have a great time together with Sunny - live life to the fullest!
Pink is about the last color that would have come to my mind but it looks good on these knives. Informative video; thanks.
It's a very visible color, especially during winter season. And if I get a daugther in the not too distant future, she'll have a lot of pink knives to pick from. ;)
What a beautiful dog ,I love animals their love is unconditional nice knives as well 😃
Fun knives! And it's cool how Bolt tries to hold you while you hold him.
Fun knives, indeed! :) And yes, Bolt like to be close to me. And I like being close to him too, so it's a win-win situation!

Very nice Video ! Nice informations about the Grinds. 900 Abo's are soo deserved!

You're correct, Patrick. I did spend some time on the strop with these knives, and they all feather nicely now.
Sold!
I just need this knife
Awesome video man
I also own a few pair of the rugged mountain pants from haglofs
Love them
Greetings from Holland

Hi, i have ths 2! Of course with white bone micarta handles!!! Greetings from Germany!
White Bone Micarta is a nice handle material, although somehwat difficult to find if dropped in the snow. ;)

After 5 years do you still have these knives? Do you still prefer the mini aurora or did the ul bushcrafter win you over?
Any thoughts on Becker BK21 ,Kershaw Camp 10 or Bark River Bravo machete
Also what boots are you wearing
The feathers kept falling off Fredrick!

Great video! Wanna sell it?
Was the steel the same on both ULBs?
Yes. Same steel on both; CPM-3V.

What a bad place to be cutting.
