Liz & Jamie, I did it! I just signed up as an FTB Mate, I've been thinking about this since I watched Jamie's talk to the Royal Photography Society--I just have to support people who share the "Life Lessons" they have learned as they travel the world and experience new cultures. I appreciate your approach to travel and how you tell a story (and without advertisements as a bonus!). I challenge all of your viewers to join me in providing you with a little financial support. Cheers to you both!
Fantastic! That's so kind of you, and much appreciated. Jamie put a lot of time and thought into his RPS talk, and it's so encouraging to receive comments like yours. Thanks a million for becoming an FTBMate. ❤️ Now don't forget to join our Discord group where there is a strong camera and photography chat. Cheers! Liz... followtheboat.com/pub/
You two have the most genuine, authentic, and honest sailing channel on this platform. I do come and go as a viewer and every time I do watch I am inspired by what y'all do. Your humor (despite being British - haha) is a welcome relief from the chaos elsewhere in the world. Thank you for continuing to share your journey!
Hi Liz and Jamie, as a former photographer and film maker in the TV and event business I often had the problem with "producers" that I should have adapted my work to the mainstream to fit in more advertising and make everything look more modern. I have always refused to follow this. Ok, so I didn't become world famous with my work, but I was always able to keep the love and beauty for traveling and bring home stories from "beyond the horizon" the way I liked it. It's great how you show your travels on TH-cam. It is always an inspiration. Thank you for everything. Juergen from the Sailing Pilots
Isn’t it odd that the moment you start talking about TH-cam the algorithm cuts you out. 24hrs have passed and at the time of writing this there are only 5 views! And no comments! Jamie & Liz please know that your episodes are ALWAYS brilliantly put together and produced ( this one is an example of that in part 2) Thank you from a long time viewer You’re appreciated Blessings Nick
The fact is that yours is the only, “sailing channel” I still watch. What you do to my mind is the most unique that I know of. With the amount of adds that, youtube play during your vids I know they are making revenue from your content.
Soothing, serenity, removed, relaxing, blissful beautiful living. A huge benefit to the viewer are your candid discussions. The island and the culture there is a real trap 😎 Thank you for lifescape 👏
Liz your voiceovers are wonderful...relaxing, beautifully written and eloquently read. I love the documentary style, I am here to learn and see places, not tanned bods. PS: As a lifetime traveller to Bali, can I say that 99% of this island is not touristy and offers extraordinarily amazing travel experiences. Just saying, after your last video! 😊
Hey Simon. We'll freestyle a little of Bali soon and we completely agree. In fact we were surprised at how undeveloped the northern side is. We loved our time there and will feature an anchorage similar to Asahan soon.
I really liked this episode where you showed the ancorage at Lombok. The filming and the still pictures together with voiceover is great. Many "younger and bigger" channels just talks too much all the time. Maybe it´s because i´m getting older as well 😁
The best feature of your channel is your photography, especially Jamie’s street photography, photos of the local people you encounter. Great respect for your artistic skill.
I am still getting notifications of your videos, but I have been so busy lately that I am behind on all TH-cam stuff. One of the things I have always liked about you guys is that you don't try to sell us Japanese knives, VPNs, or vitamin drinks. I really do appreciate what you guys do and enjoy watching you. Thank you.
Thanks, Jeff, good to see you in the comments. What's wrong with Japanese knives, vitamin drinks and VPNs anyway? 🤔😆😀 Don't worry, we would never do that. 🙏 Liz
@@followtheboat So funny, it's the standard on those other channels, oh and apps, apps, and more apps. I'd like to take a fine Japanese meat cleaver to the ads 😅
I would have never guess that you were British lol I enjoy the channel because you two are genuine with your content that you provide, i.e. NO BS, No fake or put on type of content to get people to watch. I love Jamie's stills, like your story and history of the places you are sailing to. To me it is just Real.
I love this episode. Your new docu style video of the anchorage with voice over was beautiful. Liz, I really enjoyed your poetic voice over. The shell photography was stunning, and Jamie, your photos are brilliant. Thank you
I agree on the nonsense going on with Adobe, unfortunately I use it on a daily basis for my business. No time to learn a new platform software. I also get all of your notifications and enjoy every single video, thank you and keep up the stills. They are gorgeous!
@@followtheboat if you guys ever find a workflow without Adobe. I would love to see a video about converting and if it’s worth it. I only use the photography bundle as I already own FCP, but would love to get rid of that monthly bill.
I used to follow your channel as a subscriber but some time ago i didn,t see any new videos. Now that i found out that you were still making videos i had to subscribe again because youtube aparently unsubscribed me. On the positive side i have lots of videos to catch up and watch 😊 Love your chanel and the way you present your way of life. Fair winds ⛵
That's another thing that we hear frequently, being automatically unsubscribed. It's frustrating but glad you now have lots of episodes to catch up on!
Spot on wrt the algorithm. I am a subscriber, and this is the first time this year you showed up on my feed. My feed is dominated by these large youtube-shorts panels. That’s where it looks like they are driving traffic. I would love to get a main feed with just my subs and no shorts or “recommendations” on it.
Don't talk to me about Shorts, Stephan! I am constantly removing them from my app. There is a hack that removes them for 30 days but they come back. I wish TH-cam would allow us to filter out shorts. I'm often clicking on notifications that a new video has been published by a channel I'm subscribed to, only to find it is a short. Annoying as hell.
Annecdotal, but while I subscribed to your channel several months ago, for some reason it's been feeding me a steady stream of "Follow the Boat" recommendations like crazy this week. Here's hoping you've cracked whatever algorithm issues that caused your recent dip!
hit the nail on the head . Every big show has adds for products but you keep it clean and real. As for viewers the click bait shows are getting worse every week . It is this is my wife girlfriend in a small swimsuit. There are shows we don't even watch anymore . Yes I missed your show and had to look it up . Maybe more sailing would be nice
Hi Liz and Jammie, you were the first sailing "channel" i found. Channel is in quotes because i first discovered you over a decade ago with your podcast. I can't recall for certain, but i may not have even known about youtube at that time. I wasn't a sailor (still not) but i do love adventure and your voices were so pleasant to listen to. I made the jump to video's with you and what a world that has opened up. Thank you for putting yourselves out there for the world to poke at. I appreciate that your hobby has given me the opportunity to arm-chair-travel to exotic destinations and learn about cultures so different from mine. Safe travels!
Hi Liz and Jamie - had to be done, went and signed up on FTB Mate. Never done before, but really do appreciate the information and comments on the life. You speak my language - informative and conversational. Thank you and see you online again soon.
Thank you, Helen! That's great and we love you for it, much appreciated. You also get access to the private section of Discord and our high-res photo Dropbox account. We're in transit at the moment but I'll email details soon. Once again, thank you 🥰
I lived in the Philippines for 4yrs as a photographer. Doing walk a bouts was my heaven. Watching your video brought me to tears. I made little money those days. But my camera was my joy. Life as a visual artist is not easy. Never underestimate your gift. I love love your work
Hi Guys First off I really don’t mind if folks know we are the ones who wrote to you about the perception that you may be getting ‘special favors’ from people of influence in the region. I’m really pleased I mentioned it to you because having met you guys it would be wrong of me not to say anything and let the perception live on in others - so - you cleared all that up and your response to me on WhatsApp by the way was great 👍 -😂 your response to clear all that up here was fantastic - well done ! Already some of the folks wrote back to say maybe they have summed you up wrong 😊 so it’s great you explain how much you really make through YT and what your intentions are. We certainly didn’t make money when we were doing it - it cost us more. The only benefit was when we ran an animal welfare program and folks really came forward to help us fund all that - including a vet in an aircraft - that was amazing ! A second comment I made is that you had mentioned people venting on YT and that they shouldn’t - and what people wrote to me is they think you are referring to Nick on SRR - I wasn’t sure but as mentioned to you I don’t hold a candle for them because I think they have muted some of my comments (can’t handle that people like what we say after all these years of full time sailing and sometimes it’s good to bring perspective or balance to some comments they make that are wrong and when I back it up with facts - easy - they seem to have muted the comment and future comments 😝 - that’s their loss and also for the sailing community at large !’) But - I also get that SRR were sharing their current feelings - they had after all had a tough anchorage and then had to clear in by going in a dinghy in dangerous rip currents under a bridge, inflating a wet bag as fender because metal rebar could damage the dingy at the dock - and - hey - they vented a bit and I personally think it’s not bad because people need to understand the dangers ! We actually lost a friend in his dinghy in exactly these circumstances ! Also - all it takes is for one person to die doing what they did and really I think some people of influence there are ‘too sensative’ about defending their country and all it takes is being pro active and saying - ‘hey - point taken and let’s fix this for the sailors ‘ and not just defend themselves and do nothing to improve the situation ! So that was me sharing what we wanted to clear up with others and also trying to say I think SRR were under pressure and showed it ! As reference let me say this - when we were sailing in Indonesia, I made a big deal about all the fishing fads and stuff we had to avoid at night - it’s dangerous. Folks wrote on social media that we should not be saying these things and we are disrespectful saying it. Raymond Lesmana, the rally leader chatted to us about it and when we returned to Indonesia the following time things had changed ! They now have AIS and radar detection etc on a lot of these devices and it felt so much safer. When we arrived we congratulated Raymond - he said he took it up with fisheries and they agreed to do something about it ! We never got any thanks from the community who told us we shouldn’t mention these things ! But - Raymond is an exceptional person and an exceptional Rally leader who has first and foremost the sailors safety at heart ! So sometimes we need to see the bigger picture and this was why I came forward for SRR to some extent - I think they could have left the ‘beeping’ out but again- he was showing the level of stress in a stressful situation and it would make sailors think twice about landing there - unless of course - the people in charge made it better and asked them to publish that on a future video - that in my opinion would be progress . Cheers my friends and thanks for clearing all this up - amazing folks you are 🤗
Thank you, Brent, for clarifying. I didn't want to mention names but appreciate the follow-up. If nothing else I hope the video serves to illustrate how difficult it is to make serious money from TH-cam!
Interesting analysis of "The Algorithm". So sad that Google cares nothing about the content providers their revenue depends on. I've definitely noticed that I get many fewer notices that the channels I subscribe to have made new videos. On the other hand, I get notified that channels have published "new" videos that I have already watched. Pretty sure you are right, the people at Google have very little idea what their software actually does.
I have watched you too for years, and if you have not, I highly recommend you read the book or listen to the audio version of the TH-cam formula. It explains a lot and your trouble is you have a low count and it may be of some aid to you
Thanks, but we're really not that interested any more. We've kept abreast of the guidelines and it's exhausting keeping up, so we now just do what WE want to do 😁
Thank you for continuing to post videos (I've definitely seen some of the weird TH-cam notification issues you brought up). You've kept me going on my refit project restoring a 40 ft. steel ketch by reminding me of the end goal (two years in right now). I hope to join you on the other side of the world in a couple years. I love all the knowledge you convey, the exciting places you visit, and that you treat the locals with the respect everyone deserves. You said that you get nothing in return, but anywhere, if you treat people with respect, they usually return it. Keep up the good work!
BTW - I appreciate your efforts to share your knowledge and experience with the rest of the world without resorting to showing off your lovely wife in a bikini in every thumbnail to increase your views. You two are a class act. Keep up the great work!
We noticed that we are getting the notification of new videos days after they have being published. Interesting at how close I was on how much you were getting payed. We make videos just to capture what we are doing so we can look back at it. I also want my grand kids can see what we were are actually like. I think you got the right balance and appreciate you making the videos. People don’t really realize how much goes into making videos or the cost of the equipment , we just bought a new drone, new action cams , new video camera best part of $5000. If it ever brings anything in great but we are not banking on it. Have you also noticed the number of you tube sailing channels that are no longer making videos. We can think of a dozen so whilst the market is saturated I think there is still room for people to make videos. Amazing photographs and great video !
The whole followtheboat thing started as a way for me to tell my travel adventures for my family. It just grew over time and turned into a beast 😅 Yeah, I get notifications that are days old, and sometimes get the same notification over a couple of days.
I love my free time, I refer to it as therapy from the years of always chasing. I used to always have to fill my time up or else I felt guilty for wasting it and now I just feel present knowing that soon I will have a pile of boat work to work through and somehow we always do onboard UJUD. Great topic Liz & Jamie. Looking forward to meeting both of you soon in Langkawi maybe coincidentally in the same anchorage. ❤
@@followtheboatMoved to Texas from Montana. My grandchildren needed me😆. Went on Social Security so will see $ when I can. I have followed you both for so long you feel like family. J’s photo work keeps getting better and better!❤
Yep! Our three months on the same mooring at Asahan just before you picked it up was our battery recharge after all the go, go, go since leaving Australia and it is also our favourite anchorage we've found in Indonesia so far. Guess it's not a secret Gili anymore. Cheers Rob & Karen.
Hi Liz & Jamie. Thank you for your insights. On this late crowded sailing channels youtube, you guys remain on our (myself and my wife) short list of whatching for what I believe is your genuine style and fairness. Indeed some weeks if not months the greedy youtube did not notify us of any updates from your channel or even other channels. Something is very wrong with youtube and google generally. I look forward for other variants to leave youtube behind. Best of Luck and Good Health! 👏👏
Keep at it ! Love how you go about it all. Been following 6-7 years and still strongly look forward to your overall packages. No drama, just interesting valuable knowledge and stories. I agree you don't alert me any more, as with many other channels that dissapear for months at a time. Still subscribed so I've no idea why !
Much needed reality check for serious viewers putting into perspective our TH-cam experience. Interestingly I tended to float between channels looking for pertinent subjects related to our cruising needs and planning. I was particularly interested in your plans to visit Japan as it remains an intended destination but I also now see the advantage of just viewing the sea shells and the beauty surrounding our chosen path. You both do that so well! Thank you for sharing your hobby with our community and setting a standard for others to follow!
Guys been following you for a few years - why ! Love what you do - you tell it how it is - absolutely- loved part 2 wow - guys - Jamie your filming and photography are stunning - Liz your project- please tell more looks very interesting- lastly I have throughly enjoyed This weeks filming - yes Liz do one while sailing - like wise to you guys peace and fair winds
As from the start of your channel I follow. Why is all about your honesty. Humble , happy and a realistic. No bragging at all. Also at most episode you show the world how to behave as a “stranger” in a foreign country. I call it the British politeness attitude if I have to give a name. For sample the American way can sometimes blunt or even harsh for the receiving end. Tour a American group true Paris for that experience. No offence , it is that way. Being humble is not always gifted for some or a culture. About your video footage, your videos of the flora and fauna are always epic. Krakatoa was one of an super epic video. My favourite ❤️ Please keep up the story tell, filled with beautiful pictures or video. It’s relaxing while learning. Thanks for sharing. On you tube , I suspect that if you have long list of subscriptions you tube algorithm will be in disarray. Less is more 😊 SLV does have people at home that are helping with editing and so organise the media stream. It’s not all direct form that boat.
As someone with a younger channel (working on my refit currently) I found this unvarnished look at the TH-cam economy very interesting and relatable. Thank you. 🙏
Liz those photo's of your beach combing finds are truly beautiful!! And professional! I would love for you and Jamie to do a few minutes on how you do it. Things like that are important and can be useful in understanding species populations and changes over time. I'm sure there must be a scientific database somewhere that compiles that kind of information.
Thank you for the kind words. I'm in a couple of fb shell identification groups full of experts; so far I have found one new species of vexillum! I have a new website coming out which will showcase some of these shells. 🙏 Liz
Hi there! I know the title of the video is "How much money does TH-cam pay us?". However for complete transparency it would have been nice if you had included the income from Patreon and FTB Mate as well. My reasoning for this is that without the TH-cam channel and the videos you post there, the Patreons and FTB Mates firstly would never have found out about you. Secondly, the income from these sources is largely tied to the content you post on TH-cam (if I am not mistaken?). And finally you mention the costs of FTB Mates and the commission payment providers charge. But not the related income. Just a thought! Love your videos and content! Thanks!
I have watched nearly all of your vlogs (missed the refit and India) and have really enjoyed the sailing story over the years. This episode is terrific and your continuing honesty about what you really earn from TH-cam is refreshing. I love the current approach with the relatively recent introduction of photography stills. It’s the best format so far for me. I’d love to know the lens, F-stop and ISO you’re using for them but probably too much. Thank you for educating and entertaining us.
One of the most unselfish and honest channels out there with some of the best quality videoing , photography and commentary, thanks again guys for your tie and effort. Also one of the very few channels that make the time to respond to every comment.
It’s fascinating to hear real world info on your content creation and monetization. Pulling back the curtain benefits all viewers 👍😁There is no substitute for REAL cruising and live aboard information. Thanks for good informative content.
Please "STAY ON TASK" authenticity and your "SPOT ON" content is the glue viewers cherish... I remember a favored Shakespearean passage "NEVER SUFFER FOOLS, GLADLY"! Personally, at 77 years young cruising near and far on my CD 30 Ketch with "Sully" Labrador. May I humbly offer a cherished USN "BRAVO ZULU" (aka Well Done") you chose the path less traveled most inspirational for me. Thumbs Up & God Speed
I’ve been subscribed ever since I became aware of people sailing our oceans, and your approach is greatly appreciated and inspiring. But I have yet to become a patron and have only purchased a few items from other sailing channels, such as a t- shirt. I’m still considering to try some sailing because of your approach to life.
Bloody hopeless using any social media platform these days, they're all filled with companies selling crap and dopey influences selling bullshit. Such a shame. 🙄🙏 Liz
I really like the more artistic documentary style vids with voice overlay, but still very much appreciate hearing your perspective on things like this one. The photos are amazing, in particularly Liz's sea shells!
Love the photographic side of this week's episode. And yes, I would be delighted to see more episodes like that. I feel we get to linger and really enjoy the location with you.
Great! We're now getting our heads round shooting the right footage to go with the narration. We'll continue to include Jamie's images in our episodes, hopefully even more of them! Liz 🙏
I clicked the subscribe to all. I get alerts on my phone when you post. I subscribe to Free Range Homestead, formerly Free Range Sailing. There was a glitch where their videos didn’t alert when they posted. I'm caught up to date, but I had to go back and watch three that I missed. I do not know why. A TH-cam glitch of some sort. I unsubscribed from SLV when they posted sailboats being dismasted under a bridge from Hurricane Idalia. They were laughing and joking with the staff of Young Cruisers Association. The whole lot are as phony as the day is long. IMHO, they need the mental health they advertise to their viewers. Thank you for sharing an honest assessment of your TH-cam observations, associated cost, advertising, and the slim margins of money making for sailors not wanting a full-time business. And finally, please keep the folks in Beryls path in keeping. Especially Billy and Sierra from Tulas Endless Summer. 🤞
I love watching you both, you are almost like family to me on virtual vision,I have five videos on my channel but they are short and not awe inspiring in my opinion.safe sailing guys,Dirk.
Awesome pictures of the shells Liz.. What a great way to "collect" them. 26:20 = must have been a typo, or is it actually 40 cm long? Is it hard to identify the shells? How do you do it?
Love your stuff and appreciate your time spent sharing it. I must say, you don’t show up as often in my feed which is partially my fault as I have slowed my watching of TH-cam sailing due to covid ending and workload increasing as I struggle to keep up with the economy.
Thanks for the kind words. We know we're slipping off the radar, and maybe we'll do something about it when we finish the current passage to Malaysia! In the meantime, thanks for watching. Liz 🙏
As a sailor I have kept off from having a channel. Although we sailed Europe and Asia with enough interesting views. We are now discussing whether we will film our changed circumstances and circumnavigation… it’s undecided. Thanks for the insights. Btw we’re also in Indonesia.
Isn't Indonesia a fantastic place? I could live live here one day... We blogged in the Med, from Egypt to India, then to the Maldives and Langkawi. We morphed to video in 2014 during the refit. Don't do it unless it's a passion. 😊👍 Liz
@@followtheboat Yes indonesia is Beautiful as is the rest of Asia. I arrived in Asia some 11 years ago, met my now (Indonesian) wife. We tried making a living here. But its disaster, unfortunately after several lightning strikes hit our yacht, we could not leave the country timely. Stuck in the burocratic system I have come to appreciate the culture in a different way. (negative unfortunately) Spare you the details. We hope to be able to leave and only come back for holidays. As countries to retire, better go for Singapore ($$) or Thailand instead, from there it's still easy to sail here. As for the channel? We probably record and just use YT as a storage for family members. My wife thinks that by doing videos in Indonesian language she can get hundreds of thousands of followers and make it worth wile I take the position that it's fine with me as long as I do not spend my sailing or diving time behind the computer to edit. We will see....We met quite a few YT channels in person and can confirm they work very hard to make a living. Had I wanted that I should have started many years ago. For me sailing was the best way to get away from daily business calls, crossing the English channel, have a pint, read a book, and feel the breeze. sail back. That's living. Inviting patrions to join? Not for me. Our next boat will only have cabins for some real close friends and our children to explore the world. Happy sailing guys!
You don't need to shoot 4k for youtube. Just FYI most films at the cinema are still delivered in 2k. You can save a fortune in hard drive space and upload times by sticking to HD.
Future proofing our footage. We avoided 4K only up until recently but bear in mind a large minority of people watch TH-cam on 4K TVs and it is something that has been requested. TBH we've been shooting 4K for years so the storage issue is something we've already swallowed.
As you both know I never miss an episode sometimes the podcast do ramble 😮 . Please don't go away. You are correct on the notification sometimes I have to look for you. Jamie is a great photographer and I have always said you should close every week with still shots and leave them up for a little longer. If anyone doesn't want to see them they will click off. Again from this old man no one does it better than the two of you.
The update system doesn’t work properly. It is ridiculous. I find it very frustrating. And people like Vagabond are a business now… they don’t do all the Instagram stuff etc themselves. They have a team of staff who do that now. Delos has the same issues you do… even though they are big they have issues because they don’t run it as a business. The anchorage is on my list now… looks like exactly why I want to cruise. And loved the cinematic style really worked for me.
Just caught up with you, busy sailing. Being a new channel myself, I know how much work and cost goes into producing episodes, like you we do it for the fun, and being able to document what we do. We are not in the glamourous parts of the world, based in the north east of england, although currently we are sailing in north west scotland, a very wet and dull north west scotland. I have also seen the same as you Liz, channels I do watch disapearing from my reccomended lists, and I have to search them out to find new episodes. I guess the same happens with my subscribers and my content. I have noted that if you have a disaster, or an incident / accident then this seems to get promoted. My last video posted a few days ago documented a pan pan call we had to do, and that is over 5.5k views in 4 days, never been that high ever in such a short time. Also sex sells, we dont do that. hahah. I see plenty of new channels with only a few videos with thousands of subscribers and many thousands of views and likes, just because they have a scanterly clad person in the thumbnail, usually the content is very poorly put together. We have watched you for more years than I like to think, you are probably one of a couple of (I dont like the term but) influencers, that moved us onto a life living on boats. Keep up the great hobby. Dave and Janet.
We don't have a problem with scantily-clad bods per sey because, let's face it, in the tropics we don't wear much on the boat. Fortunately for the rest of the world, we put clothes on for the camera 😅
@@followtheboat I don't mind either, when the content is good. Something else I have noticed, the recommendations I get on TH-cam mobile are different to those on TH-cam pc, and different again on TH-cam on our TV, all on the same account. How does that work? Anyway like you it's a hobby for me, I see the few quid every couple of months or so as a bit of bunce. Keep up the good work.
Wow... Even not being one of the largest sailing channels, the ~USD$121.00/month is so low. TH-cam Ads certainly make them much more per video. Anyone hasn't started a channel over 15 years ago is certainly up to a huge wake up call, if they think they can live on TH-cam revenues alone. Some channels get very lucky and grow extremely fast (i.e.: WF channel, Peter McKinnon) but those are exceptions. I like your content and keep watching. Stay strong! 🙂
Yes, YT is a mugs game if you're doing it to make money (unless, like you say, you are a huge channel). Treat it like it was originally intended (as an online platform to house your videos) instead of a business then it's OK. I'd love a billionaire to start a rival, non-advertising, not-for-profit platform for ordinary people! Liz 😊🙏
Brilliant video as usual. I notice the yellow-hulled ketch at 23:41, do you know what type it is as it is very similar to my Hedoniste (three booms). :)
Hey David, great to hear from you. We don't know much about that boat other than it's a permanent fixture of Asahan. It's not been abandoned but the owners have been away for some time. If I find out more I'll send you a message on Telegram. I hope you are well.
Very insightful video (as always). Hard to believe that people even think you get perks from speaking in the interest of officials 😂. After the brief talks we had in Lombok this indeed would never come to my mind. Yume is finally back in the water after quite some delay so we are ready to head back West. Who knows whether we will bump into you guys again. In the meantime we also set up a TH-cam channel, but because of the high density of channels in the English speaking world, we focus mainly on mandarin speakers. Let's see how it goes. So far we have 33 subscribers 😅
Lovely to hear from you, and great news that you're back in the water! Sensible idea on going the mandarin route... I hope we meet up again, it would be lovely to see you all again. 🙏 Liz
1,453rd view; 287th LIKE posted. I've not even looked into how or the worth of trying to monetize a music-only channel. QUESTION: how does the length of your videos help or hurt the numbers of those who will want to take the time to watch a complete episode? TBH - there is the Speed settings option that always viewers to watch the playback in less time than posted. Would it be helpful TO YOU - to create videos that are only 10-20 minutes long; and do MORE of them? Cheers!
Hey Peter, thanks for the comment. Our videos have been 10-20 minutes for the last however many years, but to do more of them? No thanks, one a week is enough!
Top of my head, when we joined Patreon there was: Delos, SLV, White Spots Pirates and DrakeParagon. There were no other channels when we uploaded our first vids. 🙏 Liz
So sad to see that number from YT. I was hoping you had a sustainable number. I know that your friends and Patreon is much larger and makes it sustainable. But I really don’t. As someone in his fifties who would love to be doing what you are, but doesn’t have a ton of money or investments to “retire”. Love you guys and your content. Love transparency. I have other channels I’ve supported that weren’t very clear with their sponsorships. Wondering how often the contract with the sponsors limit the transparency.
I think it's always a compromise. The sponsored videos I appreciate are the ones that are clearly marked "includes sponsorship" at the beginning of the video (this is a feature on TH-cam, a box you tick to say it includes a promo), so at least you are expecting a sponsored segment. Double points for making it interesting or entertaining. Relevance is pretty important too.
One of the main issues with youtube, is being un-subscribed from channels I enjoy watching and having to subscribe again and again & ding the bell, the only gripe I have with some channels is paid promotions, I understand why they have to do these and I don't blame them, I blame google for poor payment levels, the revenue used to be quite good but over the years has been steadily dropping off in value from a dollar to cents and that spells the death nell for those trying to make it in the tube world, I gave up a long time ago and now only watch vid's when I can.
Yes! Being unsubscribed is intensely irritating for me, as a viewer. And even worse being subscribed by YT to channels I have no interest in. Of course, as FTB, it's frustrating that our content is no longer promoted. Thanks for sticking with us! 🙏 Liz
I’m seeing a decline in CPM as high as 30% in other non video related media as well, like mobile apps. One reason leading to this is the new Apple privacy policies and the new European policies that prevent advertisers to track user preferences and to show more target ads (what is in fact detrimental to the users, as the banned tracking is not at all invasive as people think and they will still have to watch the some amount of random ads). This is moving a lot of indie developers out of business. But I tough TH-cam was imune to this.
I didn't think targeted made any difference on TH-cam because they measure by time viewed, not click through. IDK, maybe they have different rates for each measurement. What I can tell you is that I have never seen a single relevant ad on TH-cam, mainly because I'm served up Indonesian ads in Bahasa!
The video of Asahan exhibits the feel of the Port Moresby I grew up in in the 50’s. When it comes to Patreon I can’t do that as it requires using PayPal which I refuse to use. If you have a bank account of credit card structure I can contribute. Is that what FTB Mates was about?
Yes, FTBMates allows Stripe payments using your credit card. Thank you! Asahan is a special place. If that's the kind of area you grew up in, I'm jealous! We've stumbled across a couple of spots like that in our travels and always wonder what it would be like settle roots in these places. You could do a lot worse, that's for sure. Which Port Moresby are you referring to? I only know the capital of Papua.
@@followtheboat Born in Australia, moved to Papua New Guinea for 7 years, back to Australia, on to New Zealand, Back to Australia, on to Old Zealand (Holland NL), now about to attempt to return to Australia in my Southerly 135. Some Netherlands facts: Netherlands Area: 33,000 square kilometers, Population: 18 Million. So the Netherlands is just half the area of Tasmania yet holds two thirds the population of Australia and earning nearly two thirds the GDP of Australia with natural resources of only some natural gas and lots of water. The Netherlands produces 6% of Europes food. As I mused over this I realized that Tasmania was discovered and named by Dutch Mariner Abel Tasman, who sailed by Australia then on to discover New Zealand, New Guinea, and Indonesia. I haven’t lived in Tasmania yet so that has to be part of my adventuring plan, perhaps after visiting Asahan to complete my following in the footsteps of Abel Tasman world tour by sail.
Now don't forget to join our Discord group where there is a strong camera and photography chat. Cheers! Liz...

Ah, what a kind comment, thank you. Apologies for the humour 😉
Jamie & Liz please know that your episodes are ALWAYS brilliantly put together and produced ( this one is an example of that in part 2) Thank you from a long time viewer You’re appreciated
Blessings Nick
Hey Nick, thanks for your message. The video is not yet published, only our supporters can see it, ad-free, until Sunday. Hope you are keeping well 🙏
So happy to see you both still doing it! Always thinking of you both from time to time.
The fact is that yours is the only, “sailing channel” I still watch. What you do to my mind is the most unique that I know of. With the amount of adds that, youtube play during your vids I know they are making revenue from your content.
Appreciate your feedback. We should be getting that revenue but somewhere along the line our income has diminished 🤷
I agree, all content creators should be getting a fair share. While the rich with the power they wield just keep getting richer.
Maybe it´s because i´m getting older as well 😁
Yes, I think age has something to do with it. When I watch something on youtube, I want to either learn or be entertained.
The best feature of your channel is your photography, especially Jamie’s street photography, photos of the local people you encounter. Great respect for your artistic skill.
Cheers, Brian. That means a lot.
Love the middle section with the scientific specimens and Liz’ voice over. So soothing. Good music selection too.
Many thanks for the encouragement! Liz 🙏
I loved the section with the mix of video, stills, and voice overs.
I would have never guess that you were British lol I enjoy the channel because you two are genuine with your content that you provide, i.e. NO BS, No fake or put on type of content to get people to watch. I love Jamie's stills, like your story and history of the places you are sailing to. To me it is just Real.
And we always look forward to reading your comments, Jerome. They genuinely mean a lot to us, so thank you.
Thank you, Valerie, we appreciate you leaving a comment. Yeah, Adobe, sigh... 🤷
@@followtheboat if you guys ever find a workflow without Adobe. I would love to see a video about converting and if it’s worth it. I only use the photography bundle as I already own FCP, but would love to get rid of that monthly bill.
Love your channel. You don't need to compete with the other channels. This recent type of vlogging is nice, bringing in a more artistic style.
That's good to know, thank you. We never know if we've cracked the algorithm!
hit the nail on the head .
More sailing coming up, Jim 😁
Thank you for the kind words, Billy. We appreciate it and are happy to know you were following our podcasts before our TH-cam channel.
Still one of the better, real sailing channels in my view.
It's a view I wholeheartedly agree with 😉 thanks for supporting us.
I love love your work
Thank you so much for this comment. Photography is one of the greatest passions, although I'm biased! I hope you are still taking photos.
Hi Guys
First off I really don’t mind if folks know we are the ones who wrote to you about the perception that you may be getting ‘special favors’ from people of influence in the region.
A second comment I made is that you had mentioned people venting on YT and that they shouldn’t - and what people wrote to me is they think you are referring to Nick on SRR - I wasn’t sure but as mentioned to you I don’t hold a candle for them because I think they have muted some of my comments (can’t handle that people like what we say after all these years of full time sailing and sometimes it’s good to bring perspective or balance to some comments they make that are wrong and when I back it up with facts - easy - they seem to have muted the comment and future comments 😝 - that’s their loss and also for the sailing community at large !’)
But - I also get that SRR were sharing their current feelings - they had after all had a tough anchorage and then had to clear in by going in a dinghy in dangerous rip currents under a bridge, inflating a wet bag as fender because metal rebar could damage the dingy at the dock - and - hey - they vented a bit and I personally think it’s not bad because people need to understand the dangers !
Thank you for telling your story. I helps me experience another life. Not bad, two for the cost of one.
Thanks for watching, Rob 👍
Awesome pictures. Thank you for sharing. There's too much beauty in the world to take it all in.
Cheers, Jason. Well said 👍
I have watched you too for years, and if you have not, I highly recommend you read the book or listen to the audio version of the TH-cam formula.
This is a good point, Alexander. Give out good vibes and you will get them in return. Good luck in completing your refit ⛵
BTW - I appreciate your efforts to share your knowledge and experience with the rest of the world without resorting to showing off your lovely wife in a bikini in every thumbnail to increase your views. You two are a class act. Keep up the great work!
I think those days are long gone, I'm afraid! Appreciate your honest feedback, thank you.
Still one of the greatest sailing channels out there. So, honest and genuine, amazing informative. The shell pics were stunning. 👏🏻

Yep! Our three months on the same mooring at Asahan just before you picked it up was our battery recharge after all the go, go, go since leaving Australia and it is also our favourite anchorage we've found in Indonesia so far. Guess it's not a secret Gili anymore. Cheers Rob & Karen.
It hasn't been a secret for a while, but most just don't make the effort to go there! So we have it to ourselves. Fair winds, guys. 🙏 Liz
Thanks for taking the time to comment. 🙏 Liz
Thanks for bringing us back to reality... Great video and honest assessment of boat life and effects on culture.

Thanks, Dave. Try hitting the notification bell icon, that may help. Good to know you're still with us. Hope you are keeping well.
Yes, I go flitting for subjects of interest too! I'm so thrilled you enjoyed this episode enough to comment, thank you. 🙏 Liz

My favourite ❤️
Please keep up the story tell, filled with beautiful pictures or video.
It’s relaxing while learning. Thanks for sharing.
On you tube , I suspect that if you have long list of subscriptions you tube algorithm will be in disarray.

SLV does have people at home that are helping with editing and so organise the media stream.
It’s not all direct form that boat.

As someone with a younger channel (working on my refit currently) I found this unvarnished look at the TH-cam economy very interesting and relatable. Thank you. 🙏
So glad you found it useful. Good luck with the refit! Liz 🙏
Thanks!
The title of the video was regarding TH-cam specifically, but I can tell you the average supporter submits around $4 per month, before fees.
@@followtheboat Thank you so much! I appreciate the reply.
I have watched nearly all of your vlogs (missed the refit and India) and have really enjoyed the sailing story over the years.

@@followtheboat BTW like the voice over and cinematic approach over edited content.
I very much enjoyed the style of the video.
Great, thank you. Appreciate the feedback.
Thanks for your comitment
As you both know I never miss an episode sometimes the podcast do ramble 😮 . Please don't go away. You are correct on the notification sometimes I have to look for you. Jamie is a great photographer and I have always said you should close every week with still shots and leave them up for a little longer. If anyone doesn't want to see them they will click off. Again from this old man no one does it better than the two of you.
Thanks for continuing to watch our output, it really does mean a lot to us. 🙏😊 Liz
Excellent episode- loved the photos & videography 👏👏
Glad you enjoyed it, we plan to continue with this style of videography. 🙏 Liz
This is a great channel with great advice 👍
Thank you 🙏
Such a nice couple and great info. I’ll be a new sub. Take care
That's kind of you, thanks for leaving your comment. 🙏 Liz
Thank you 👍
Just caught up with you, busy sailing.
I just checked and I had been unsubscribed!😮 I don’t know why that happens! ❤ you guys.
There is a pattern here. Blummin' TH-cam and its judgemental algorithm! 😆
Great to see you here, and thanks for confirming what I thought. Liz 🙏😚
True ❤
👍🙏
Liz 😊🙏
Like button mashed!
Give it some, son! 😆 Liz 🙏
22:40 yes
👍😊
🙏 Liz
DaVinci resolve .. only way to go
Indeed. I've dabbled already but need a couple of weeks dedicated to making that transition.
Would love to know who the other 5 channels when you started.
Google exploits video creators! Thanks for sharing.
That much is true.
