- The plane crash that tragically claimed the life of Buddy Holly occurred on February 3, 1959. Alongside Holly, the pilot Roger A. Peterson and musicians Ritchie Valens and J.P. Richardson (The Big Bopper) also perished in the accident. The incident, which occurred in Clear Lake, Iowa, has since been referred to as "The Day the Music Died." Holly chartered the plane because their tour bus lacked heat and Richardson was suffering symptoms of the flu, so Waylon Jennings gave up his seat to Richardson. Valens got his seat on the plane by winning a coin toss. This event left an indelible mark on the history of rock and roll, as it claimed the lives of three talented and influential musicians, cutting short their promising careers. The event inspired the song American Pie by Don McLean.

So young and talented. We'll never know what could have been. So terribly sad. May they all rest in peace.
In Loving Memory 🕯 😔
Buddy Holly is the best ever! RIP
RIP.
The day the music died, bye bye miss AMERICAN PIE…….
We lost a lot that day 😢
Ritchie had a fear of planes
Truly, the day music died, we lost three accomplished musicians.
Waylon himself sings about this in "a long time ago" and when you hear it itll make you tear up.
Did Richie Valenz really win the coin toss or did he really lose the coin toss?
Good point.
Ooooieeeeee I look just like buddy holly
Could have been avoided by not riding with a "Pilot" without a licence and bad weather.
