Sensei Taiji Kase - A Shotokan Master

  • Sensei Taiji Kase was born in Chiba (Tokyo), Japan on February 9th, 1929. In his youth, he trained with Yoshitaka Funakoshi, the son of Gichin.
His father was a judoka and by the age of 16, Kancho Kase was already a Nidan in Judo. In 1945, during WWII, he started to practice karate at the Shotokan Dojo in Tokyo. Shortly after the war he became the youngest 3rd Dan karateka in Japan.
As one of the most qualified instructors of the Japan Karate Association, he got the honour to lead and train the team of instructors sent to a mission in 1965 to present Shotokan Karate in South Africa, the USA and Europe. In 1968 he settled in Paris, where he lived until his death in November 2004
The development of competitive sport karate, as well as many turbulent changes in the world karate policy, has often poisoned the international karate community. Sensei Kase always remained devoted to his choice in life - to practice and teach Shotokan karate as it was taught to him, free from any sport's or political conditions.
Kase Sensei had reached a level of absolute control, depending on a state of harmony between mind and body. His amazing ability to generate and control his inner energy, gave to us a new and unique dimension to Shotokan karate as well as for life itself.
This deep humanity made Sensei Kase a perfect reference to everybody who loves karate and are willing to follow the way of Shotokan karate as it was passed on from Gichin and furthermost Yoshitaka Funakoshi to Sensei Kase more than 50 years ago.
Sensei Kase 9th Dan died on 24th November 2004. He's buried in the famous Pére Lachaise cemetery in Paris.

Probably one of the greatest exponents of Shotokan Karate I ever had the pleasure of training with. A truly inspiring karate man and a true gentleman. I was honoured and privileged to train under Taiji Kase for the last 17 years of his life and what an hoour it was. A great innovator and true to the line of karate established by Yoshitaka Funakoshi. One of the last great samurai...Domo Arigato Gosaimashita, Dave Wilkins 6th Dan Shotokan Ryu Kase Ha.

I trained with him once. He could barely get his kicks above knee height but , such strength and energy. Those kicks would easily break legs. Unique and phenomenal

I trained with Sensei Kase once in 1987 after the death of Nakayama. Like yourself I believed my youthful speed and technique would allow me to catch him with an attack (this was my first time seeing Kase and he seemed overweight to me). But when I faced him for a demonstration he easily avoided my attack and went behind me to counter on the back of my head, laughing at me in good humour. He was without doubt the fastest person I have ever seen in the flesh in a karate suit, despite his weight!

My teacher was with Taiji once. I asked him was he really fast as they say.... He told me that you could hear a wind flying out of his punches... It was a long time ago, but that is the first thing that goes into my mind when somebody mention this legend....

Magnifique, incroyable, presque surnaturel.

During one of the karate seminars in former Yugoslavia, Kase, assisted by Jorga brothers and master Takashi was demonstrating some katas to the group of younger Yugoslavian masters. At that same time, in the corner of a dojo, where a big boxing bag was hung, Jorgas and Takashi were "having a sort of a good time" - they were punching that bag, competing in terms of who will punch the bag harder and send it up higher to the ceiling. Kase, a bit annoyed left his students for a moment, approached those three and - all of a sudden, lighting-fast turned to the bag and stroke it with what looked like a horribly powerful gyaku tsuki, and calmly, without giving a glance to the bag or to those three assistants came back to the group. But presently, everybody's eyes were concentrated at the bag....which HASN'T EVEN BEEN MOVED, only a tiny little bit shaken! People were confused - what to think, what was it, how come the bag wasn't put into motion??? Then one of the assistants came closer to the bag and his face got PLASTER PALE - apparently, a huge hole, as if inflicted by a cannon shell has been made in the bag and the sand was silently pouring from that hole... Kase, for the few following seconds looked in the air, with just a trace of a grin in the corner of his mouth, pretending that he wasn't aware of the sensation he caused and then continued with the kata demonstrations...

Thanks for the reply. I agree that judging is wrong, however speed in martial arts is very important. I don't think this can be denied. Two people with the same experience/technique where one is over-weight and the other not so much would surely favour the lighter of the two? Also, for this reason many martial arts promote respecting your body in every way..

Resistance maybe, stamina no, stamina is a result of being fit and healthy, heavy people tend to gas faster OR be a lot slower as a result. Obviously I'm not trying to insult heavy martial artists it's just something I noticed with Karate in particular. Judo as well now I think of it but there's an obvious reason for that.

  • @AlessandroMagnoI
    @AlessandroMagnoI 15 ปีที่แล้ว

why are lots of men who do karate over-weight. no offense but its the truth. i dont see over-weight people doing Taekwon-do, Muay Thai kung-fu, or any other martial art. This is a serious comment i hope people responding treat it as such. I just dont see how you'r going to defend against the speed of people in other martial arts or even people completely untrained when most of the people who i have seen are very slow and heavy in their movements whilst practicing the art of Karate.

The mening of the "bunny hops" are unknown. Some say its there to bring the kata back to the original starting place in order to facilitate competition.
Other karate styles have either dropped them or replaced them with other techniques.
