    My grandfather told me a story one time. He was a boy, this would have been in the late 1800's, and went to an old time carnival. There was a tent with a big sign that said "Learn The Secret Of Life". He paid his fare and went in. An old man was sitting, whittling. He said, "Whittle away from yourself boys and you'll never get cut." I still laugh when I think of this.

    Title: Woodcarving for beginners
    Narrator: “Now, I’m not going to teach you wood carving because I don’t know how”

    • @RichardVelazquez
      @RichardVelazquez 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      That jumped out at me, too. As well as comments like "one of the things carvers tell me is that you will quickly start.... etc etc.". I'll just find a video of an actual wood carver in that case.

    • @Spacehamster1OO
      @Spacehamster1OO 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      One of the best ways to learn is, Ironically, by trying to teach. Some weird phsychology trick.

    • @zacknicley8150
      @zacknicley8150 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Spacehamster1OO No, you’ve completely misunderstood that concept. The best way to show you understand something is by teaching it to someone else. Many people claim to know something well but when asked to teach it their ignorance and lack of insight becomes clear. Fumbling your way through a tutorial is not a proven psychological trick to learning more effectively. Teaching to others sounds what you already know down deeper into your heart and mind strengthening your conviction. It does not somehow grant you greater knowledge.

    Very interesting video. Thanks for sharing. For sure it's a type of woodworking what anybody can start to do without the need of having a (well equipped) shop.
    The chisel-set/toolset, an anti-skid-mat and a kitchen table should do. As a left-hander I wonder if some of the chisels/tools exist also in a left-handed version.

      I watched professional carver Mary May on Roy Underhill's Woodwright Shop and she said that pro woodcarvers learn to work with either hand. It's partly because of what Colin just experienced about grain runout, and partly so they don't have to spend a lot of time reorienting either themselves or the wood. I make no claim to being a woodcarver, I'm just passing along what she said.
      In another episode, Roy had on an older woman carver who he noted had made a mistake because 2 of the pieces she was working on were supposed to be identical, but weren't. She said, "Carvers don't make mistakes, they just change the design." Good words for all craftsmen (craftspeople?) to live by.
