Imo you don't know Mamamoo until you've seen them on Immortal Songs - they're some of the most spectacular vocal performances you'll ever see by a kpop girl group. My favorites are Delilah (a Korean version of the Tom Jones hit from the 60's) and the beautiful ballad Backwoods but you might want to start with their debut performance on the show, Wait a Minute. Hard to believe they were raw rookies at that time. Paint Me is the theme song of their four album series 4 Season 4 Color. The song and the deceptively simple MV introduce the main concepts and cyclical symbolism used throughout the 4S4C project. Paint Me is one of MMM's main vocal masterpieces in a recording studio along with I Miss You and Where Are We Now (the song you said you loved and asked for the title). The clip with Moonbyul rapping on Paint Me is from an alternate "orchestral" arrangement they performed to start their 4+ hour long 4 Seasons F/W concerts in 2019, a year and a half after Paint Me was first released. Moonbyul sang rather than rapped on the original recording and she added that rap verse for the concert version. They later recorded the orchestral arrangement of Paint Me on their 2 cd career retrospective album I Say Mamamoo: The Best in 2021. Btw, there are other layers to the 4 Season 4 Color project besides matching the music to a season and a color. Each title track explored a stage of love in a four part relationship cycle corresponding to the seasons and there are hints of an ongoing series of life cycles via reincarnation and various other ideas from Asian philosophy such as yin & yang and Taoist 5 element color theory. I’ve been trying to figure out how to do more Immortal Songs reactions. I just finished filming some and tweaking the edits. It’s been a pain. Thank you for elaborating on the Four Seasons. That makes for an even more interesting story. Other groups might do it too, but the ones who have similar thought provoking themes are (G)I-dle and Dreamcatcher. For them to have such foresight for years to come is so amazing!!! When I saw Hwasa perform Maria at one of the awards shows, there were no subtitles and I was stuck on the vocals and the choreo. I’m thinking now that the slower parts of the song were her struggles in the industry and built up to that familiar confidence.

This excellent video essay about MMM doesn't really address the question posed by the clickbait title but one piece of evidence is the 4 Seasons project. 4S4C is the most complex project ever done by a girl group and it represents a landmark artistic achievement in kpop history yet in 2018 & '19 Mamamoo was overlooked for Artist of the Year and Best Female Group awards. Imo Mamamoo isn't underrated (almost everyone agrees they're the top female vocal group), they're taken for granted. I don't think Maria is structured the way you're thinking, which sounds like a journey from a difficult place to a brighter one. I think of Maria and LMM as conversations with herself in the midst of her struggle to be at peace with herself and the world around her. Rather than a story with a happy or at least a better ending Maria is more in the nature of a report from the front in an ongoing existential battle.

Yes, Hwasa co-wrote and co-composed Maria and LMM with her main creative partner at RBW, songwriter/producer Park Woosang. He was involved with many MMM songs until he left RBW and he's still tight with Hwasa and Wheein.

They have not disbanded. They have no desire to disband. I think there was even a reference to the path Sistar took. All possible future group activities are wide open.
