Had a soccer coach my freshman and sophomore year of high who was there since he started the program back in the 80s. Ran 30-45 min before practice, did doubles the first week and a triple one Saturday. The team made it to states because they could outrun the other schools. Coach retires, new coach comes in, no more running or doubles. First season, the team went 0-15-1.

Man thats so relatable it actually hurts lmao. My soccer team I was with for 6 years, we were dead last the first year playing together (0 wins, a tie and all loses) LOL. For the next 12 months he made us come out every Saturday, even when the season was over. We had to run 5 rounds of the Scotish Mile (entire team runs in a single file line and the last person has to sprint to the front, then rinse and repeat until the mile is done). After that year we went undefeated every season or 2nd place because we simply played the last minutes as hard as the first minutes cause we were so conditioned.

That no water shit made me laugh, the varsity coach in highschool used to hold a pre-try out "champ camp" where we didn't touch pucks for the entire time, just four days of skating for an hour straight. He made us ring a cow bell in order to take a drink of water and wouldn't let us bring it on the ice with us. I coached my neohews football team for 2 years in a row 2 years ago. I'm 29. I was just supposed to help because no one volunteered to coach. Well the head coach was the "now" coach and the rest of us were "then" coaches and we led a mutiny on him and he was demoted from head coach to coach who talks to annoying parents so we didn't have to.

Our water was a hose attached to a pvc pipe with holes drilled in it on a shopping cart. During our 3 a day hell week (2 weeks) we didn’t get the shopping cart. My “then” coaches did more to prepare me for life than any teacher did.

My "Then" coach was a former HS star QB. Had dreams of playing it big. Always screaming and yelling at us. I swear dude had issues. One day guy gets so pissed he backhands one of our players with a helmet. Sent the kid to the ER. God I miss that man.

His interpretation of a hard ass coach falls pretty short. My coach was a maniac at times, but he worked our ass in three a days and we were superior in our fitness and stamina. A great man.

Exactly. That was awful. Instead of building discipline it was a distraction, like all I could think of was "when are we getting some water?" We had PVC pipe troughs with holes spraying water and, when allowed, I would be so thirsty I would wrap my lips over the hole to maximize my ingestion. Good old days.

I actually think both sides are being mocked for their extremes. It’s funny how much people love to put on the rose colored glasses for their perception of how great they truly believe this tough ass style of coaching is. This is perfect for humor, but neither of these examples should be aspired to in the real world.

My high school coach had us so programmed that we knew every single thing that we'd have to "take a lap" so when it happened we just took off before he even said to. Mainly because if he said anything you'd be running 10 laps or be completely forgotten about. That was my favorite.. If you messed up on something he'd been on you about for days you may legit end up getting a "drop the ball and go" and you might not stop running your laps until practice was over or possibly even be the last one out of the gym. I tested it a lot, but in the end I always lost lol I loved every coach I ever had growing up, they truly made me into the man I am today, and I still hear them in my head a lot when I do certain things.

All the people who think either of these coaches are good are crazy. Then coach gets you overly masculine wife abusers, and now coach gets you "yes men" who have never been challenged. Maybe we should be reasonable and realize that the ideal lies somewhere between these two.

Sometimes what you really need is a figure in your life who shoots down all the anxiety, over-thinking, and circling in your brain. It feels so good to have that kind of old school no B.S. energy; It's motivating, simple, and pushes you to do better than you think you can. Therapy and mental well being is important too, but you also need a good kick in the ass to get in gear. It prepares you for facing life's ACTUAL hard challenges in a safe environment where you have a team and coach that looks out for you.
