Please read Blindness by José Saramago!!!! I’m currently reading it and it’s so good, I really think you would enjoy it. It’s about a disease/epidemic that makes people go blind all of a sudden (a white blindness)
Edit: I’m not sure if it has sexual violence, I haven’t finished it yet, but I’ll let you know

I don't hate the cover of The Last as much as you, but as a Swiss person I am very bothered by the type of building the designer chose for it 😂it both seems very English in style and just feels super out of place in the Swiss alps - it just doesn't seem like Switzerland to me

The Road is probably the most depressing book I’ve ever read. It’s not an easy read but since you’ve seen the movie, you might have a better time since you know the story going into it. High school me was not prepared.

I just finished “The Last One” by Alexandra Oliva. It was a great post-apocalyptic novel following a start on a reality survival show. It questions the role media had on our perceptions of reality. No SA, but there is one scene of violence against the main character.

I'll have to check some of these out as currently I've been left wondering if post-apocalyptic is for me at all. I tried Swan Song, The Stand, and even The Road and I wouldn't really say I enjoyed any of them. It just tends to be the doom and gloom and woe is me that makes them hard to enjoy for me. And some authors (looking at King in particular) REALLY lean into the graphic details.

Also a post apocalyptic fan, first time finding your channel. Our book club read Wanderers this year and it was split about half and half liking it and the other half DNF’d. I was in the loving it camp. Great twist ending. I agree it went on a bit long at times but overall I had no problem. If you haven’t read Good Morning Midnight yet I would suggest it. That was one of my top books from all of 2023 I read. Much more cerebral than action, even though I tend to lean toward the action type I loved this book. Looking forward to more recommendations of post apocalyptic books.

A Canticle for Leibowitz is my all time favorite S-F. Don't expect much action or character development, it's more an idea book. I love the idea to anchor the plot around a Christian monastery, it seems so out of place for an S-F novel, yet it works so well. I must warn you that it is slightly preachy, but it's mostly in the last part and not in-your-face kind. It's also very approachable for non-S-F readers, because there is next to no technobable.

Most of the post-apocalyptic fiction I've read has been of the zombie apocalypse sub-genre. My favorites from those are:
The Girl with All the Gifts by M.R. Carey
World War Z by Max Brooks
Feed by Mira Grant (1st of a trilogy which I enjoyed much more than books 2 and 3, but 1st can be read as standalone)
Survivor Song by Paul Tremblay (and Tremblay's A Headful of Ghosts was straight horror rather than post-apocalyptic but so good)
    plus one non-zombie post-apocalyptic series I loved:

I tend to avoid male authors when it comes to gritter settings at least with authors I'm unfamiliar with i get the feeling that for some unwarranted reason they'll be some sa for plot development or character building no actual deeper discusion. Just some. random sexism, not from the characters, but in the writing or poor female characters maybe none at all. I just don't have the time to care anymore. I really liked The Moonday Letters by a finnish author Emmi Itäranta!
And I just realized that I have no idea what you're saying in the beginning of your every video XD lol

Thanks for the rec, a Finnish book that I liked recently was The Core of the Sun by Johanna Sinisalo
PS she says "Hey everyone it's Emily Fox, today's video is going to be..."

LOL, Good Morning Midnight is actually an old man and a young girl alone at an otherwise abandoned Arctic research station, and a bunch of people (both sexes) on a spaceship returning to a suddenly silent Earth (no SA!) I think you'll like it!!

I haven't been a turbo watcher for a while now and I was wondering if you ever got around to On The Beach. Smh
I see a few people recommending Blindness and while I agree be prepared for great walls of text and the common post-apocalyptic underwhelming ending.

Thinking about what you said about the Last, have you read The Last Policeman by Ben H. Winters?
It's an impending apocalypse, and the main character is a Detective, and is also kind of distracting himself by solving a murder.

I did! I liked the concept more than the book itself but it was an interesting idea!

I read the next two novels to The unnamed midwife. The book of Etta wasn't for me, more violence, more angst, more action. The third book The book of Flora had a different vibe, loved that one, so if the second one wasn't for you, still you should give the third a chance.
And I wouldn't say they are companion novels, you definitely need to read them in order to understand certain things of the plot.

I thought Parable of the Talents was way too gratuitous and I could not like the main character anymore because of just... so many things. Telling the women in her group it's better to let SA happen to them than other alternatives? That was the straw the broke the camel's back but there was so much more too. I don't care if it's Octavia E Butler, I'm still going to be uncomfortable with it.
My favorite recent post-apocalyptic book was Station Eleven, even though it was too realistic in some aspects and kept freaking me out. lol

Omg you're gonna read Metro!!! I don't know if I should be happy or scared that you might not like it haha
And if you continue the series and don't like Metro 2034, Metro 2035 is so much better... (hence my fear)
I would even say, maybe skip the book in the middle? Probably not the best thing to do since the last book sort of ties the whole story together, but at the same time, the middle book was rather disappointing for me
Knowing that the author was inspired by the videogame based on the first book to continue the trilogy really goes to show the power of videogame storytelling, in my opinion
Thanks to the Metro series I got to truly bond with a very dear friend of mine, who is a fan of the videogame and suggested I read the novel, I did and I loved it, and we would do discord calls in which we compared notes between the videogame and the book, a lovely experience that I couldn't have had otherwise
Thanks for giving a chance to such an important book for me
