Hi Adam, thanks for the great video. I followed all of your console recaps since 2013 and I can't believe, how fast time flies ... I'm looking forward to your console recaps for the 9th gen. By the way: Do you think that both Sony and Microsoft will continue to sell disc-based systems in the 10th gen or will they finally die out? Nice to see you include the Wii U. Still my all-time favorite console from Nintendo and really this past generation, too. "Past Generation?" Wow, that feels weird saying that now since the 8th Generation is now old news.
I was actually going to ask if this video was essentially part 1 of the 8th generation retrospective series, but man, I honestly can't believe it's been 7 (8 for the Wii U) years since these consoles came out, I remember watching you unbox and review these consoles for the first time, I got my PS4 5 years ago (I waited for a bigger Hard Drive, and a Star Wars limited edition lol) then got a Wii U that same year, and an Xbox One S the year after. It's unbelievable how long it's been.
I actually think that Microsoft trying to get rid of generations and implement Smart Delivery means that as long as developers are willing to compile the game to run on an Xbox One, Microsoft will let it play on an Xbox One. So some of these indies that are not that intensive might be released on the platform for a long time.
I mean are generations still a thing? Nintendo scrapped the Wii U in favor of the Switch. PS4 had a Pro version, XB One had the One X. Also XBox One and Series X/S all have Game Pass and many games on it are older OG XB and 360 games which some get upscaled. The generation thing might be over now?
The digital versions of the next gen is what scares me. I feel like next next gen will be full digital, and that's when gaming for me will not be the same.
I can't wait to see the 8th gen retrospectives. You're retrospectives are always the best. The comment section on the Wii U video is going to be crazy since the Wii U is so polarizing it's the Israel of video game consoles.
Not when you can play them on the Series and PS5, prices will remain higher. You can still find plenty of cheap Xbox One and PS4 games though so... i don't see where you're coming from on this.
well online prices for PS4 and Xbox One are still bad most used ones go for 200 dollars plus, but if you we're to go to a Gamestop or a Pawn Shop you can find them for 140 or less
The reason this generation feels so short is because the last generation before it (PS3, 360, Wii) lasted so long due to the economic recession. It's still a strange feeling seeing these consoles lives come to an end so quickly.
Assuming you mean this generation starting in 2013, then it was only a year shorter than the previous one (which in turn was also intentionally started prematurely by Microsoft with the 360).
I look forward to your thoughts on these consoles each year Adam. Your wii u first year perspective was my first video of yours that I watched and have subbed and watched every video and podcast since. Keep up the great work!

Switch is 9th gen it just came early and will last the full generation it’s 3 years old so as most main Nintendo portables it will last 10 years meaning 7 years to go.
@@wizzgamer Incorrect, the Dreamcast far outweighs the technological capabilities of fifth gen consoles, it also came out multiple years after the majority of them. It also was released only a year prior to the PS2. The Switch lacks the technological capabilities of even a base Xbox One, the console that launched four years prior. It also launched a full three and a half years prior to the XSX/PS5. The entire life span of most generations is only four years. The Switch is by no metric a ninth generation home console. If you consider it a portable, then it might work there.
@@AdamKoralik True the Dreamcast was much more advanced compared to 5th gen consoles and I do myself class it as 6th gen. However The gap between generation launches is similar Dreamcast launched 4 years after Saturn and PS1 which both launched in 1994 with Dreamcast first launching in 1998 and Switch also launched 4 years after 8th gen PS4 and XBOX ONE which launched 2013 and Switch 2017. There was also similar time frames for the respective succeeding generations for example PS2 was 2 years after Dreamcast but Xbox and GameCube launched 3 years later in 2001 PS5 and Series X also being 3 years after Switch. It’s normal for portables which in reality is what the Switch is with just the ability to play on your TV to come out before the next gen home consoles which is also why it’s slightly behind Xbox One same as the Game Boy was slightly less powerful than the NES and PSP was to PS2 etc. Look at it this way the Switch will spend most of its life alongside the 9th gen PS5 and Series X as I suspect it will be around for another 5-7 years before Nintendo releases a successor.
@@wizzgamer Sorry man, just no. The Switch is an 8th gen console if we consider it a home console. Generations are one part timing, one part technological advancement. You can often wedge a console into a generation if it meets one or the other, though generally it needs to meet both. The Switch satisfies neither. There's no universe in which the Switch can be considered a ninth generation home console.
/F to pay respects. Thanks Adam for making another one of these. I am always down to hear you ramble about consoles, it's always so interesting to hear your take on them.
It's so odd when I think back to when these came out. It's basically like measuring my life in console generations. I'm a nearly completely different person from then, though I still watch videos about consoles that I don't even intend to own lol.
Man, it's so weird to see these consoles go. This is the first and, so far, only generation where I own all three consoles, and I have so many games for them that I'm probably not upgrading to 9th gen anytime soon. Still, thank you for sending off the last year these consoles, this was definitely nice to see. Also, the Wii U launched on November 18th, not 19th. The original Wii launched on November 19th. Maybe you are more fond of the original Wii?...LOL.
My favorite kind of video. A bit of criticism: I miss the times you would show a stack of videos games for each platform. Also, I'm surprised you didn't put the Switch in this video, since even Wikipedia categorized the Swich as an 8th gen console.
The point about disc pressers is actually an interesting one. Nintendo stopping production of Wii U optical discs makes sense since it was a dead end for them, the Switch uses a completely different kind of physical media. PS4 and PS5 both use blurays and the new console is backwards compatible with the old discs, so presumably the production and certification process would be at least fairly similar, so there's a good chance LRG and others can get PS4 titles made possibly as long as PS5 discs are being produced. I'm also wondering that because of the whole backwards compatibility angle, how soon we will get PS5 / XSX exclusive indie games. Unless your game is really pushing the envelope (or using nextgen features like DualSense), devs might as well keep their stuff backwards compatible to take advantage of the large previous install base for quite a good long while.
On some reflection, the one thing that might be worthwhile to note - or possibly not - about PS4's final year was the one accessory release Sony gave us (last December, wasnt it?) in the form of the DualShock 4 back button attachment. At the time, a lot of people, me included, thought this would be indicative of the PS5 controller, mainstreaming the idea of back buttons on controllers at last. I'd love to know if that was just a weird one-off or if further developments along those lines are forthcoming.

How is the Wii still getting Just Dance games if the WiiU is literally being blocked from getting new titles already? Did Nintendo not block Wii titles, or are they unofficial releases or something
So the Nintendo Switch is part of the 9th gen of home consoles; PS5/Series X/Nintendo Switch, correct? The Wii U was a part of 8th gen consoles; PS4/XBOX ONE/Wii U. The Nintendo Switch has had a three year start over 9th generation of consoles if it is considered 9th gen.
@@AdamKoralik - Thanks for the reply, but what make you think that? So, Nintendo released two pieces of hardware in the 8th gen? Wii U/Nintendo Switch.
@@NYCJoeBlack Generations are one part tech, one part timing. From the tech perspective, the Switch isn't even as capable as a base model Xbox One. From timing, it came out three and a half years before the XSX/PS5. Previous generations in history had an average life span of four years. So it doesn't meet that definition either. It's not unheard of to have two consoles in the same generation. Atari did it, Sega did it, and SNK did it. Nintendo is just the latest.

@@SeaSlug A 16 inch screen? Are you insane? That's bigger than most laptops, and you're certainly not going anywhere with a console the size of a doormat, regardless of how thin it is. Even if they did make a Switch with a 16 inch screen, it's certainly not going to do many favours for the scaled-down performance of the Switch in handheld mode. Part of the reason that the Switch manages to achieve such good visuals in handheld mode is down to the small size of the screen, which means the pixels are much denser (hiding the fact that it's only 720p) and the display being smaller also allows for things like reduced draw distance and simplified lighting compared to docked performance to go relatively unnoticed. Also the PS4 got so many games like the PS2 back in the day and my favorite this year alone were Dreams, Nioh 2, Final Fantasy VII, Spider-Man Miles Morales, The Last of Us Part 2, Sack Boy Big Adventure! I got more fun out of the PS4 this year than I got out of the Wii U in 4 years!
I'm really thankful for the free upgrades Sony is offering on PS4 games that are also on PS5. It definitely helps fight off the FOMO of the new console generation and the anxiety of having to hunt one down right away. Right now I'm in no hurry to hunt down a PS5. If this is the last gen that offers an alternative to all-digital systems, than it will definitely be my last (well, at least Nintendo will surely continue some sort of discs/cartridges a little bit longer).
Greetings from Germany, stay healthy and keep up the good work!
I think that'll be dependent on way too many factors right now to be honest.
Nice to see you include the Wii U. Still my all-time favorite console from Nintendo and really this past generation, too.
"Past Generation?" Wow, that feels weird saying that now since the 8th Generation is now old news.
Same.
It takes years for these videos to occur...but I always look forward to them. You sir are a gaming historian legend.
Wii U is 8 years old and PS4 and Xbox One are 7 years old. Now I'm starting to feel old but just wait until these consoles are retro.
I can't wait to see the 8th gen retrospectives. You're retrospectives are always the best. The comment section on the Wii U video is going to be crazy since the Wii U is so polarizing it's the Israel of video game consoles.
I am hoping that game prices for PS4 and XBox One drop drastically so that I can start collection for those systems easily.
You still haven't bought a ps4 or x1?
I was searching good prices on new consoles and I found a One S for 100 euros (and 229 for the All Digital ._. )
Not super likely. Both consoles are backwards compatible, AND there aren't that many current gen games yet.
7 years OMG I'm getting old
Everyday is a win.
@@ninjamaster3453 so true
Yeah, talk about it
Great video Adam 7 years already for PS4 dam.
The reason this generation feels so short is because the last generation before it (PS3, 360, Wii) lasted so long due to the economic recession. It's still a strange feeling seeing these consoles lives come to an end so quickly.
It was because of a recession?
Son of Tiamat I don’t know if that’s actually true or not.
8:28
Scott the Woz just did a video on that.
Listening to this made me nostalgic about your birthday videos for the 8th Gen Consoles.
I was in High School back then, now I'm 22 and working while in College! Man, time flies...
What have been some of your favorite 8th generation games?
Far Cry 5 tends to float to the top.
The funny thing about the 8th gen is that we saw a lot of people reveal how young they were when they were shocked that the PS4 took off like it did and the xbox one and wii u came in a distant second and third. The PS1 and PS2 took off a left everybody else in the dust and yet since so many people grew up in the 7th gen a lot of young people never realized what a powerhouse playstation was in every other gen!
Minor correction. The one S was not discontinued yet.
Great video Adam, I appreciate you making this! I wasn't sure if you would given the fact that the consoles are now OBE.
Thank you for doing this each year for us Adam. It is a treasured gaming tradition.
Great Shirt 👍 and info on the wrap up phase.
I think the nintendo switch is 8th gen on home console side, and 9th gen on handheld side
Haldhelds aren't usually factored by the console generations. And Nintendo controls that market anyway.
@@WAX1138 yeah, but if you look at this you will see that 1st gen in handheld is the mattel autorace, 2nd gen is the microvision and the game and watch, 3rd gen is the game boy and the atari lynx, 4th gen is the game gear and the turboexpress, 5th gen is the game boy color, 6th gen is the game boy advance and n-gage, 7th gen is the nintendo ds and psp, 8th gen is the 3ds, ps vita and new 3ds and 9th gen is the switch

ADAAAAAAAM! A few years ago I bought an Xbox One because of one of your videos. I enjoyed it for a year until I traded it in for a PS4, which I enjoyed even more. Thanks man!
I wonder if PS5 and Series X still support patches for PS4 and Xone games. I think gen 8 and onwards is going to suffer greatly once patch data can no longer be obtained since lots of games either came out incomplete or broken.
We're really in the 9th gen, now. 😞. Man. Does anybody want to pump the breaks on time and slow it the heck down for a bit? 😅. Tired of seeing everybody and everything aging so fast.
Thank you for enabling CCs on your video and for making these videos. They're beyond cool exams of console history. Have a good day!
What crazy about 2020 is that Sony gave the PS4 the best last year for a console ever and the PS5 a great launch.
They published:
Dreams
Nioh 2
MLB The Show 20
The Last of Us Part 2
Iron Man VR
Ghost of Tsushima
And had Final Fantasy 7 and Persons 5 Royal as exclusives for PS4
Then had Demon Souls, Spider man miles morales, sack boy, astro's play room in November!
I can't believe that ps4 had a better year than switch and Xbox one combined so late in its life!
The long awaited end of 8th gen has come at last.
I remember adam's 7th videos... I'm old :(
Great video. I love your videos on consoles the way you do them is unique I don't see many people doing console retrospectives,Predictions stuff like that.
Time, time, time for another console war.
Time stands still for Iwata 'till he evens up the score.
You can still see his wireless body stalking through the night, In the LED flash of Nintendo's Switch home screen.
One X and Pro could last a long time if they were not paired with such a terrible cpu
Right? The new consoles getting actual desktop class processors is absolutely massive. Even at the time of release for previous gen we knew that the AMD Jaguar cores were lackluster.
well that's basically the difference between 8th and 9th gen
@@quajay187 does not really apply to the base PS4 and Xbox one because those gpus are dated.
@@Edmundostudios yes im aware of that but if you were to swap out the Jaguar cpu with Zen2 on the ps4 and Xbone you would see similar performance as next gen. Just lower res. Basically, the difference between CPUs is much much bigger than GPUs
@@quajay187 Yes the cpu is a huge bottleneck in these systems.
Very good video. I like how you inform your viewers by going over each console from the same generation
Thank you Adam great video stay safe 👍🏼👏🏼
I just bought my PS4 a month ago, and have never owned an Xbox One or Wii U.
I'm loving the PS4 so far - so many great games!!
I'll grab a PS5 in two or three years when they make a slim version :)
Switch is 9th gen it just came early and will last the full generation it’s 3 years old so as most main Nintendo portables it will last 10 years meaning 7 years to go.
It's eighth gen. It doesn't meet the technological or time frame definition of a new generation.
@@AdamKoralik Then that would make Dreamcast 5th gen going by that logic.
You know, it was probably because of I was thinking of Shenmue 3's release date. Too many dates in November to remember.
Always insightful Adam! Thanks for your time and effort
My favorite kind of video. A bit of criticism: I miss the times you would show a stack of videos games for each platform. Also, I'm surprised you didn't put the Switch in this video, since even Wikipedia categorized the Swich as an 8th gen console.
March.
R.I.P PS4 thx for all the amazing memories 2013-2020
There goes dang Adam again ! Good stuff
Great stuff
Adam: if youre watching it the day it came out...
Me watching it the day after:
On some reflection, the one thing that might be worthwhile to note - or possibly not - about PS4's final year was the one accessory release Sony gave us (last December, wasnt it?) in the form of the DualShock 4 back button attachment. At the time, a lot of people, me included, thought this would be indicative of the PS5 controller, mainstreaming the idea of back buttons on controllers at last. I'd love to know if that was just a weird one-off or if further developments along those lines are forthcoming.
Big papa style gaming channel. Just watching Dawn of the dead 1978 new 4k second sight releasing in HDR10+ on my xbox series x. What a film. Big Adam in the house.
Had no idea we were getting a "7 year later" video! This and the generation retrospective type of videos are my from Adam!
I always look forward to these Videos. I didn't even know the Wii U was still getting a few games.
Always enjoy your video Adam and I watched your Ps2 slim last night as I traded in some stuff for it. Luckily it was pretty clean. Also, only 95 more Dreamcast games for a full U.S. set. I figured I'd share that with you. I look forward to watching more!
Nicely summed up Adam. Looking forward to your 8th gen coverage.
Edit: Removed game titles that I presumed were absent from the video but were in fact present
Ghosts of Tsushima was mentioned, even shown in this video.
Yakuza 7 is designed for the Xbox Series X, not relevant to the subject of the video.

Wow it was my junior year in hs when the Xbox One and PS4 came out.
But where is the Ouya!?

10:03 The Xbox One S (1TB model) is actually still being produced. The og model, aka the vcr, was discontinued in 2017 and the One S All Digital and X were discontinued in June 2020.
Yeah my bad, I was thinking of the digital version.
PS4 becoming retro. My god that is insane
How is the Wii still getting Just Dance games if the WiiU is literally being blocked from getting new titles already? Did Nintendo not block Wii titles, or are they unofficial releases or something
The Wii doesn't get new titles any more.
The Switch is 8th gen.

The best thing about the 9th gen thus far is that it fully embraces the 8th gen. Xbox 1 and PS4 games are BC and nearly all the major WiiU games have been ported to Switch. Not lost to the past like happened before at times.

It’s been a strange but good generation. Lots of new things like mid gen machines, surprise announcements aka backwards compatibility by MS, great exclusive from Sony. I think going into this next generation will be a lot closer in terms to who takes front stage. This generation seems to be a bigger jump in terms of quality, features, overall game experience. So here to the next 7 years. :)
7 years??? why does it feel it was "last year"??
Excited for the retrospective
Great video Adam. I always find the end of a console generation bittersweet. I love the PS4. I really do think it’s a fantastic console.
Adam, please try to discuss the games that came of that year more, like you use to do before. Great video 👍
Did not feel so long ago that people started speculating about the 8th generation and complained that the 7th generation never ended.
And now we have gone through another generation
Weather you like the Playstation brand or not, there is no denying they have been on a roll in 2020 and this year ending last gen strong and beginning the 9th strong as well
They gave us so many Game of the Year contenders last year and if Horizon makes it this year and Kena is as amazing as it looks they got 4 Contenders this year with 2022 looking to be insane as well with God of War and PSVR2
They honestly havent had a weak year since 2015 with only bloodborne, the order, and uncharted collection that year
if they keep this momentum up were in for a crazy 7 years
C'mon guys keep it civil no console war shit down here in the comments.
There hasn't been much.
Last week, I put my PS4 and Xbox One in my "retro" game rack and installed the PS5 and XBSX in my main theater rack. I thought that was a little odd, but exactly as you pointed out, they are now technically "retro" gaming consoles ;)
Cyberpunk for PS4/Xbox lol. actually cyberpunk was made for the older consoles which makes the fact those versions don’t work even more baffling
I wonder when the Switch 2 will come out 🤔
I just want a switch xl
A switch with a 16 + inch screen I can take and play anywhere in table top mode without the need of a ac power supply
2021 we will see a new version, Nvidia has updated their Tegra X SoC, nothing spectacular, but support for 4K videos, probably we will also see a 1080p screen.
Blowing up the screen to such a ridiculous degree would only make it look worse.

I don't like handheld mode I just want to go play with friends and randomes at the mall in card shops or anywhere like waiting at an air Port with somone .
@@SeaSlug You'd be better off investing in a portable monitor. Nintendo definitely aren't going to make anything like you described. If they do make an XL, the screen will be 1 inch larger at most.
Oh my gawd it’s time for this video!! We’re so old
I finished archiving dumps of my WiiU discs yesterday.
That was "fun" I tell you but it too reminded me that I still haven't completed Mario 3D World which I really consider doing before the Switch Version gets released.
Of those three, the WiiU is still the most interesting and useful console
Bruh, I remember 2013/2014 thinking the base PS4 was a 1080p60 beast... Not as powerful as I remember but damn what an exciting time! I picked up a dreamcast that Christmas instead 😂
My favorite thing about this generation is how so many people were predicting either the Wii U or Xbox 720 (Before the Xbox One name was known!) were going to be the market leader but this gen ending up being sequel to the 6th gen! Honestly I never thought Sony would ever be profitable in the Video Game Hardware market again but in somehow in a single year they pretty much recoupled all the PS3 losses in the PS4's best year (2018)!
Other than Dark Souls, there's nothing else that can't be played on PS4. It makes me happy knowing that I'm not permanently settling for an inferior version of the game.
Thank you 8th Gen. Certainly gone but never forgotten 👍
Hope you been doing well Adam. I actually just finished recovering from Covid. Only had a mild case but not being able to smell or taste really sucked.
Stay safe son
Please do a video about your complete Wii U collection!!!!
One thing to keep in mind is that MS will most probably release an xCloud app for the One S to keep it going even longer. If you have GP Ultimate then it’s already part of your sub.
