Thanks!

This game is a masterpiece. 20+ years later, I am still looking for a game equal in terms of its ambience, its tech tree and all the content that came along with it.
The tech tree and game were nothing without the incredible voice acting and narration. This game was so eerie at times and yet so wonderful and full of life at others. Every faction had its own heartbeat and driving force that was delivered exceptionally through each leader. This is the one game I would give anything to get a remaster of.
i used to send emails and shit out begging for a modern remake. and then one day they announced Civilization: Beyond Earth and i fucking cried tears of joy. and then the game released and i did ONE playthrough and all my hoped and dreams died right then and there. especially since i refuse to have anything to do with mods. shits shameful
Alpha Centauri was more than just a game. If you choose to sit and have a think about what it is these quotes are actually saying *about* human nature, the experience is very, very different than a regular game of Civ.
@@stevenmugnaini2938 2K: What do I care for your suffering?
I agree, it's absolutely brilliant and when I tire of new games, I always come back.
Unfortunately, it was a commercial failure, even though critically acclaimed. Brian Reynolds left to join Zynga, which is focused on mobile and social media platforms. There is more money from easy mode games, which is sad. It means that those people don't want to think and devs can make more money catering to them. Check out the story behind Cow Clicker, which was meant as a satire of Facebook games.
So I can't blame Reynolds for throwing in the towel. As far as games go, SMAC's' science fiction story was not eclipsed until 2017's Horizon Zero Dawn. But replaying SMAC is a lot more fun.
this game is a science fiction masterpiece
It really is. The Future will seek out this game as a source of Knowledge and Wisdom.
@@charlespage8692 meanwhile, Vekta is better....
Its non fiction. All that game. Prime function prevail
Please don't go. The drones need you. They look up to you!
I can't believe I watched the entire video... what a trip down memory lane. It's also surprising just how on the nose some of the speeches are especially Pravin Lal, "Beware of he who would deny you access to information, for in his heart he dreams himself your master."
Huh. At the end of Morgan's faction intro, you can hear his voice actor say "Cool."
You mean @ 35:08 ?

@@Deveyus I agree, it sounded like the director.
So fucking good, dude. Not even Deus Ex reaches the intellectual depths of this work of art.
Dude...
Deus Ex is really underwhelming as a piece of science fiction, it's just "what if all conspiracy theories were actually true???" It even includes the conspiracies about 12 Jewish bankers secretly controlling the world with MJ12.
"Alpha Centauri was one of my all-time favorite games as a kid. Played it ever since and got it again from GoG.
This game was my first introduction to philosophy / sociology / economics / business / science (well, more advanced science) that I then further studied in later highschool and college. Playing this game again as a full-grown adult now has a different feel to it somehow. Maybe I can put myself in the various faction leader's shoes more? A true masterpiece of a game that I haven't really seen since."

This game had few equals. Intelligent Sci fi !
I'd say the deepness of this game was unmatched and it's so infuriating to see how Firaxis butchered this legacy with the "Beyond Earth" game.
How a company with today's budget & resources not only denied to, but couldn't replicate the formula they had all those years is beyond me!

And in all the million ages to come, I will never breathe or laugh or twitch again. So won't you run and play with me here among the teeming masses of humanity? Very nihilistic sounding at first then switches to beautifully life embracing.
Honestly the original game was a gem. The expansion actually diminished it somehow in my opinion. Partly by tinkering with the formula and adding unnecessary mechanics. But mostly because the expansion characters were dumb. The relatability of characters like Morgan, Dierdre and Chairman Yang was the magic. In the expansion there was like a cyborg, a hacker, a pirate... bleh.
I agree. I didn't like the expansion factions either. They never had the ideological tension or magic the original ones possessed. Although I liked some of the new mechanics (but some were also terribly overpowered) I always find myself go back to the original factions.
Never got the expansion. Seemed unnecessary.
The two aliens : okay, especially their diplomacy lines.
the original took ethical boundaries and made them into groups of people, whereas you just have class distinction - far less important or poignant.
Watching this video makes another element of this very salient: the voice acting for the expansion characters is not at the same level. I'm guessing they had a smaller budget but they seem to have gone all out on the wonder clips.
There needs to be a remaster of this game. Don't touch anything other than the graphics, and maybe reanimate the video visuals, but that's it.
God yes, just fix it - no changing haha
There are *some* niche areas for improval. For example, let's be fair, the AI always does a terrible job with its terraforming. And for all the space improvements, it could be even more fun, why not have an orbital bombardment mechanic, like the Ion Cannon from C&C? Or more Planetary Council proposals?
Gimme more of that sweet sweet nostalgia
It's incredible how ahead of its time this game was.
its wasnt ahead of its time. It was right on time. Many eerily appealing games are from the 90s, no?
"Risks of flowering: considerable . But rewards of GODHOOD: Who can measure?" always loved that line paired with unsettling ambiance, chilling.
Quite possibly the deepest/most thoughtful and greatest game of all time.
eh, Not the Only one out there.

Oh yeah, goosebumps. The videos were so good, so ahead of time and still so true in their core messages. Also Zakharov main. All hail the science dictatorship xD

Network Node is the most legendary. I died the first time I heard it in game. Came out of nowhere. Amidst the hardboiled sci-fi future struggling to survive in a literally alien world slowly losing humanity. And then suddenly. DEIDRE'S GOT A NETWORK NODE!
This is a brilliant game. Even tho it deals in hard sci-fi and asks tough philosophical questions, it’s also not afraid to take itself less serious, like with the South Park-esque clip the plays at 13:56. Or the clear dig at Microsoft with the Network Backbone cinematic. Or the “are you sure” audio that plays when you try to quit a game. Or the list of works attributed to you when a game ends like “The Little Terraformer That Could.”
Or the "Please don't go. The Drones need you. They look up to you."

I would venture to say you could tell a lot about a person by which factions they chose in this game.
Also I suspect those factions changed through life.
"Changed through Life" indeed!
Here's the official birth dates and country or origin for each human faction leader:
Deirdre: 05-28-2025, Scotland
Lal: 05-03-2006, India
Miriam: 04-04-2014, Christian States of America
Morgan: 02-24-2005, Nambia

Hello there.
Anyone can send me a valid link to download every SINGLE audio files of the game? I wanna to put into my phone and restore some faith in humanity. Thank you.
The voice acting really fell off for the expansion huh. It's a shame because the ideas for the "native" factions emerging after years of colonial development are generally quite interesting but with the voice acting they all blend into one, whereas a big strength of the SMAC factions is how distinctive they were.
