I was already an adult when this came out, but I'm pretty sure that if I'd seen it as a kid, that innuendo would have gone entirely over my head. Sure, you've got the suggestive finger wag, but a finger wag can also just be a general "nuh uh" gesture.
And can we take a moment to recognize the amazing talent of the voice actors on this song? Grey Griffin, Nika Futterman & Tara Strong CRUSHED this episode!
Brave and the Bold is probably my favorite Batman cartoon. Between the definitive characterization of Aquaman (OUTRAGEOUS!), the first Bat-Mite episode, and Diedrich Bader's portrayal of Batman (also great on Harley Quinn), this show was an underrated gem.
At the time I thought Batman the Brave and the Bold was a terrible incarnation of Batman (my first introduction to Batman was Christian Bale), but over time I did grow to appreciate it. I sorta had the same arc that Bat-Mite had in the show. Also, Gail Simone's "Cruise Shipping" joke is comedy genius.
Here from the International Daily Planet - Polish division, we report that here the finger wiggling version used to be played quite often... the whole team of jurnalists has this song stuck in their heads every now and then, as well as the Music Meister or "To Król Muzyki" episode... This episode is available on Max, with the finger wiggle. I never watched Brave and the Bold at the time because I thought it looked aimed at little kids. Now I've watched a few episodes (thanks to Sasha) and I really enjoyed it!
I saw the finger wag version and I'm in Canada... I'm also surprised that was the line, I thought "I'd like to see his secret cave," was the most gasp inducing joke.
This show was my introduction to Silver Age elements of Batman and tons of lower level villains and heroes. As a kid I was exposed to much less subtle innuendo and it all went over my head just like this moment. I just thought it was a cool show, and it's still one of my favs.
I'm in shock every time i hear that birds of prey song, i cannot believe the BATB team got away with it! I'm so glad they did though, its absolute gold, a masterclass in toeing the family-friendly line. Brave and the Bold is so underrated, im really glad you mention it a lot
"Won't someone please think of the children?" First of all- wonderful show and a great reminder that campy doesn't have to mean bad. Second, this is a bit silly and a reminder that even the mildest form of innuendo is somehow worse than decades of violence in cartoons. Then again, this is after the time when a song about repressed urges could get in Hunchback of Notre Dame and the film got a U rating in the UK (definitely wouldn't happen now!)
Also the UK had its fair share of daft censorship- the original Ninja Turtles was called Hero Turtles (for some reason the Conservative government of the time had a problem with ninjas. But then Labour government came in and John Prescott had a sweet right hook so there was no issue there). Also for a time Top Cat was called Boss Cat because there was a product called Top Cat in the UK and for some reason people thought idiots couldn't tell the difference.
I was already adult when this aired, so I knew they were doing, Brave and the Bold did a lot lol Also, all the male heroes mentioned in the song who have to see Dinah and Helena later on: "Ladies, what the FU-! We heard about the song, and why did Bats and BB get off easy?!"
That facial expression during the finger wiggle though! It’s harmless fun. If your kids are old enough to ask you about these innuendo, they are old enough to get answers. The ones who just giggle already know.
Here's the power of animation. The most suggestive thing about that clip is Huntress looking at her finger with a smirk before wagging it. That's punctuation. You know exactly what she's talking about without even hearing it. If there wasn't that initial emphasis, I bet it would have gone through without issue.
I remember picking up a DVD of Batman The Brave And The Bold for my kids back in the day, thinking it looked childish, then when i watched it with them it became one of my favorite Batman animated shows right up there with the original animated series.
The episode aired unedited in Australia first, and when clips of the song made it onto TH-cam in advance of it being shown in the States, CN censors saw the TH-cam comments ie "How did this get past censors?" etc and that's what motivated the cut aways and new animation. Ultimately the episode never aired in the States and the first appearance, besides youtube, was the blu-ray as I recall (or maybe as an extra feature on the dvd release).
Seeing the three ladies singing together reminds me of the "Gilligan's Island" episode where Ginger, Mary Anne & Mrs. Howell form their girl group, " the Honeybees", and sing a song called "You need us". There was a line "like a ding-dong needs a bell." The slang meaning of dong and the alternative spelling of belle ( girl) raised some questions about hidden subtext.
I was one of those people that wasn't sold on the art style right away when this show came.out. However after watching a few episodes I grew to appreciate it. Even more than that though it was the writing that won me over. Brave and the Bold was so much fun and borrowed from all over comics history in a way that should delight any long time bat fan. I vaguely remember seeing the version with the finger waggle when I first watched it. To be honest I feel like anyone getting worked up over this bit is engaging in a little pearl clutching. The song is probably going to go over the heads of the majority of the younger audience. Teens and adults though? Its perfect for them. Which isn't unusual for this show. Like many good animated shows this one made sure to appeal to a broader audience. It made sure that even if its target audience, kids, were watching with an older sibling, or parent, or whomever, the odds were that you'd find at least some part of the episode that interested you.
Funny how the finger wagging is the thing that got heat when the song literally suggest that they would like to do things to batman's secret cave. I guess that joke went over their heads.
Something that always catches me off guard with this song is how low Catwoman can sing. One minute, she's singing like the others, and the next she takes low notes that only dogs can hear.
Batman: The Brave and the Bold along with Justice League Action were impressive follow-ups from Justice League Unlimited from the Cartoon Network series that could have extended 5 seasons.
No, "over the head" jokes should be allowed no matter what. It let's people think back to what they used to see and visualize a light bulb above their heads turning on.
Brave and the Bold was an awesome series and an underrated gem. It introduced fans to older heroes and villains they would have never know otherwise; especially younger fans.
I watched this as a kid in Australia and I reamber the figer joke as what was shown I did not know there was a version that cut to a fish tank. Every time this episode was shown I saw the finger joke. So cool bit of info I just learned thanks
Fun fact: Notice how they don't mention Superman or Martian Hunter. Why? Superman is A: The man of steel and B: Entirely devoted to Lois so the 3 of them have no idea what he's like in bed. Martian Manhunter is a shapeshifter, so he can become whatever they want in bed, so they can't really diss him either.
Here I thought I had seen all the episodes of this show but this is a show I didn't remember at all. My favorite episodes were the ones where B'Wana Beast showed up.
This might be the most infamous episode, but despite it's reputation as being the camp and silly Batman show this series did get way darker than any of the previous animated shows. I especially remember the episode where Batman has gone back in time and has to handle being around his good friend the original Blue Beetle who had died. The episode ends basically with Batman saying goodbye for the last time, knowing he's going off to die. There's also the one time we see him take the mask off, when he confronts Joe Chill, struggling to not kill his parents' killer. And there's an opening short where some judgemental magic hero who's name I forget turns a criminal into cheese. Ha ha! So silly! Except then they fade out on his still aware, terrified eyes as the sounds of rats squeaking is getting louder... 😬
This episode is one I point to when I want to talk about why BATB is easily BTAS's biggest competition for "Best Batman Animated Series." Simone's work here is brilliant.
My sons were just the right age to love this show when it originally aired and I loved watching it with them. A really wonderful example of a kids show that parents could sincerely enjoy too.
Funnily enough, i am not american and remember this episode as a kid. It was translated and it was exactly the version with Huntress wagging her finger. So, outside of the US it was distributed
I remember this episode being one of my favorites of the series. I really just loved the dynamics all the characters had, and it was fun to see a Batman who committed crimes.
8:20 in the original Yu-Gi-Oh series, there was an episode on which a couple security guys point guns at Seto Kaiba, but the scene was redrawn to make it look like they were just pointing their fingers at him. It looked so janky.
@@CasuallyComics Classic 4kids shenanigans... Oh, do you remember in Dragonball or Dragonball Z, young Goku or Gohan (I can't quite remember which series it was in), but in which ever scene, they were just naked, and in the American localisation, they added kinda floating, black underwear, that looked like they were on a different cell, covering his "lower waist" area. Don't kill if you can wound, don't wound if you can subdue, don't subdue if you can pacify, and don't raise your hand at all until you've first extended it” I feel one of the best writers in comics.
It was an Adult song where they were hoping it Went over the kid's head. I remember coming up the episode, but forget which episode. What I want is a Batman Brave and the Bold where they Meet the original 7 incarnations of the Doctor of Doctor Who.

Aquaman can never catch a break 😂
Funny how the finger wagging is the thing that got heat when the song literally suggest that they would like to do things to batman's secret cave. I guess that joke went over their heads.
I think Shrek has more “inappropriate” content and most people don’t have a problem with that
Poor old Aquaman. Never any respect.
It aired with the finger wiggle in Europe, repeatedly
innuendo is my favourite innuendo
Let us not forget that huntress groped bats mid death trap and his only reaction was annoyance that she did it then
No, "over the head" jokes should be allowed no matter what. It let's people think back to what they used to see and visualize a light bulb above their heads turning on.
Brave and the Bold was an awesome series and an underrated gem. It introduced fans to older heroes and villains they would have never know otherwise; especially younger fans.
I live for these kinds of videos. More of this please!
Aquaman doesn't have a small fish. He has an octopus, Topo
Back when I was a kid I saw many cartoons with adult jokes, etc and I just didn't understood, the thing now is that adults also watch cartoons 😂
I watched this as a kid in Australia and I reamber the figer joke as what was shown I did not know there was a version that cut to a fish tank. Every time this episode was shown I saw the finger joke. So cool bit of info I just learned thanks
Seeing this title my first thought was “THE time? Singular?” Some weird stuff happens in this show
Fun fact: Notice how they don't mention Superman or Martian Hunter. Why? Superman is A: The man of steel and B: Entirely devoted to Lois so the 3 of them have no idea what he's like in bed. Martian Manhunter is a shapeshifter, so he can become whatever they want in bed, so they can't really diss him either.
I don't even remember this episode even being in the boxed set from the library when I watched the show. Huh
"Incredibly poor taste, they clearly went too far." - Aquaman
They sure made a mountain out of a mole hill with this one. 😂 Brave and the Bold was great viewing.
Solid reporting as usual, miss Casual. Keep up the great work!🔍😏👍
I was 7 years old when I first saw it, and being from Europe, I saw the finger wiggle version, but I didn't understand anything
3:33 appreciate her not using the other shut it down meme
I couldn't believe it when I heard the lyrics back when this episode came out. It was stuck in my head for months.
Canary calls her husband gay. 😂😂😂 Just like my wife. Y'all are cruel 😂
As a kid who watched this episode as a kid. Every single joke went over my head, but looking back now it's super funny
I didn’t get the innuendo at first, but Huntress’s finger was enough to make me understand
Lore of That Time Batman The Brave And The Bold Got Too Saucy momentum 100
Batman throws his batarang, what a weapon, what a bang.🥲🤨🤣
Here I thought I had seen all the episodes of this show but this is a show I didn't remember at all. My favorite episodes were the ones where B'Wana Beast showed up.
Sasha, thank you, as always, for the great work that you do🙏💖
I didn’t understand the innuendoes as a kid so I think they’re fine.
I'm pretty sure that I saw the original version. I also thought that the "last straw" moment was the line about Batman's "secret cave."
the finger wiggle happened and it as air on TV i remember watching it clearly
When you spend a lot of your time in cold seawater, there's gonna be some shrinkage.
The finger wag being censored is hilarious, as if that makes the lyrics to Aquaman any less degrading 😆
6:14 "a Kur fuffle" this made me smile and this is why ill always be a loyal fan. Sasha your the greatest 👍
It's hardly any saucier than a lot of Bugs Bunny's jokes.
Exactly. Bugs Bunny's jokes were WILD at times.
As someone who (fairly) recently binged the whole series, I didn't even really notice the "so-called" innuendo........
8:20 in the original Yu-Gi-Oh series, there was an episode on which a couple security guys point guns at Seto Kaiba, but the scene was redrawn to make it look like they were just pointing their fingers at him. It looked so janky.
I remember those lol
@@CasuallyComics Classic 4kids shenanigans... Oh, do you remember in Dragonball or Dragonball Z, young Goku or Gohan (I can't quite remember which series it was in), but in which ever scene, they were just naked, and in the American localisation, they added kinda floating, black underwear, that looked like they were on a different cell, covering his "lower waist" area.
PS- I'm leaning toward it being Goku in Dragonball. He was also catching fish and cooking them....
This may be off topic
But in the og the outer limits
One espisode caled ZZZZZZ had a women named V(a certian part of her body) were her name is used through out the episode.
I love Gail Simone and her twitter... That redheaded bear must be protected at all cost. (the bear is an inside joke for those that don't follow her twitter). for every joke about Flash being too fast we get the wonderful statements Wonder Woman made, "We have a saying, my people. Don't kill if you can wound, don't wound if you can subdue, don't subdue if you can pacify, and don't raise your hand at all until you've first extended it” I feel one of the best writers in comics.
the mask episode actually just reran yesterday on Cartoon Network australia
4:34 I know right?!? Jaime being in this is just...off. The rest of the song is pretty dope as I love me some good puns.
It was an Adult song where they were hoping it Went over the kid's head.
I remember coming up the episode, but forget which episode.
What I want is a Batman Brave and the Bold where they Meet the original 7 incarnations of the Doctor of Doctor Who.
This and Batman 66 are my favorite versions of Batman. Thanks for covering it. When I was watching it on saturdays I watched the unedited version. I actually didn't even know there was a version where they changed it.
I saw this when it aired on cartoonnetwork in the US. I never saw the censored version
