Thanks for doing my tag. On The Beach sounds like a book I might like. A Short Stay in Hell seems to have a very interesting premise. Adding to the TBR ASAP. 😊💙

A Short Stay in Hell is one of my favorite reads of all time, I think you'll love it! Great tag idea!

A Short Stay In Hell really in frightening. It's the scariest 109 pages ever.

Those 109 pages are in my head almost nightly it seems, I've never been so obsessed with a book.

It was a surprise to see On The Beach mentioned. I thought it had disappeared from view these days. I was a kid when it came out and my parents read it, told me a bit about it, but would not let me read it. Years later I was at university and got a copy. If somebody was to use the same theme these days the book would be very different. The nuclear fear of the 50s has morphed into something more like, "Everyone would get radiation sickness but they'd survive enough to form a dystopian society so I'd have something more menacing to write about."

Absolutely, there is a bleak inevitability about the fear that birthed that book, that just doesn't exist today in a lot of writing I think.

I've read The Grip Of It. It was fine. The ending has stuck with me though so it's got that.

I know I DNF'd it for a reason, but after making this video I haven't been able to get it out of my head, I'm going to end up having to read it now.

Fantastic job with the tag and thanks for the mention! I heard a recommendation for The Grip Of It just the other day, but it does get very mixed reviews. I plan on reading City Infernal over Halloween! 😂 A Short Stay In Hell has also stayed with me. Such a haunting, terrifying, thought-provoking little book!

Thanks mate! I'll hold out for your review of City Infernal, perhaps watching it will reignite my memories of it! Since recording this I have been eyeing The Grip Of It every time i look at my shelf, I'm sure there was a reason I DNF"d it, but it does sound really cool :D

Thanks for tagging me. I've forgotten a lot of what I've read. I have even found myself inadvertently rereading a book and realizing after 40 or 50 pages I'd read it before. Some books I remember well even after years or decades like 1984. I remember On the Beach, too...I read quite a few Nevil Shute back in the day. A Short Stay in Hell sounds intriguing.

Ha that hasn't quite happened to me yet, but I'm sure it will soon. I haven't read anything else by Nevil Shute, but I really should, any recommendations? I think you'll love A Short Stay in Hell!

@@BenjaminsBookclub I liked The Far Country by Nevil Shute, it is not like On The Beach. It is about moving to Australia and the struggle to prosper in the Outback. His most famous book is a Town Like Alice about an English woman who moves to Australia after being a prisoner of the Japanese in World War II. In Australia she invests her inheritance in a small outback town trying to raise it up to be like Alice (ie Alice Springs). None of his other books are like On the Beach.

You’ve got me wanting to read Valuable Humans in Transit. It sounds so good! Also, I’ve had A Short Stay in Hell on my list for what seems like forever, but I’ve not run across a copy I wanted to purchase! (Sorry, I don’t buy anything from The Evil Empire!) Thanks for doing this tag!

I believe the first draft copies of some of the stories in Valuable Humans in Transit are available on Qntm's website so you could check them out there! Both are such brilliant books! If you do end up grabbing a copy somewhere make sure to come back and let me know what you think!!
