I love that you didn’t like reading until your wife talked to you! And now you’re so in love with books!!! lol love watching your channel. I liked Fourth Wing but yes Iron Flame is so hard for me to keep reading! I doubt I will read the next one!

Highly recommend the audiobook of The Book Thief. The narrator is superb. Before him I never liked audiobooks but he changed my mind. It’s definitely a case by case basis.

Yay! I’m so excited to hear what you think about The Book Thief! I love that big books don’t deter you (in regards to picking up Murakami) IQ84 is suppose to be one of his best ones, but I’ve been puttering around with smaller works of his. The tape of Nanking has been on my TBR for a LONG time, but I know I have to be in a safe mindset to read it.

In case anyone is interested in the meaning of the title for 1Q84, it’s a reference to George Orwell’s dystopian book 1984. The Q is also a homonym for the number nine in Japanese (kyu).

Kafka on the Shore is the first Murakami book I read and is still one of my faves after having read most of his books. Still haven’t read IQ84 (shy away from long books) but may pick up on my next trip to the library.

I read The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon as one of my "easy start" King books and ended up liking it a lot. I agree the ending was anticlimactic, however, i related to the main character having been an independent, tomboyish little girl myself. I appreciated how he was able to write from that perspective so well but i definitely see how it wouldn't stack up against his longer, stronger books.
Murakami is one of my favorite authors. I can definitely recommend Kafka on the Shore. 1Q84 is on my tbr for this year

Appreciate the honest opinions on popular books. Not everything that's hyped is everyone's cup o' tea. Also enjoy the variety in genres. There are so many books that arent talked about because they aren't sci-fi/fantasy. What is Michael's TH-cam? I have been wanting to branch out to history and it sounds like he has some good recommendations. Love the content man! Thanks for what you do!

Nice video. My philosophy is that there are too many books in the world to read ones that you do not enjoy/get something from. I think this is applicable for you and Fourth Wing. On another note, I’m excited to hear your thoughts on The Book Thief. It’s a good one.

I also struggled with The Troop. I’m writing a book about Boys Scouts and was disappointed because there are very few books about Boy Scouts from my looking-arounds.
Murakami is great! Would also recommend Kafka as a first. It was my first from him. Wind Up Bird Chronicles would also be a great first. His stories are so wonderfully weird and dreamy.

Interesting to hear your perspective on Clown in the Cornfield 2! I read the first one based on your recommendation - it took me a day and a half! Then the next day I went and got the second one and also finished it in about two days! Maybe I enjoyed them so much because I read them consecutively (?) I'm looking forward to the second one!

Nick, we share SEVERAL favorite books of all time, 11/22/63 & Pet Sematary both being in my top 3, and 1Q84 rounds out that podium for me! The length is intimidating, but it is a journey that is so weird and well worth it! Can’t recommend Murakami more. After Dark by Murakami is also a short and sweet starter book if you’re looking to get into his writing!

Any idea when you're doing Duma Key? Just finished listening to it few days ago (fifth time, read once, audio the rest cause the narrator just is Edgar) and I just always feel like starting from the beginning right after I finish it. Such good rumination of pain, loss, grief and life, and it's just so so comforting.

I too found the Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon to be pretty boring; at least it's short. My top Murakami pick is, hands down, The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle. An absolute mind-bender and impossible to pigeon hole. The narrative takes a weird diversion to WW2 that will stay with you forever.

I see that you have read some Toni Morrison books. I recently read Beloved for my American literature class. I found it a bit confusing because of the fragmented writing, the POV would change without a clear sign which we are so used to nowadays, with the POV of the characters separated in some way. It was a very graphic read but I liked the way Morrison portrayed what people of color struggled with at the time and sacrifices they had to make. I won't go about it too much but I recommend it if you do not mind reading very graphic and violent descriptions!
Omg I have to edit and add that I just finished 1Q84 and it was so good?! I read Murakami's short stories for uni as well, and there's something about his writing and the plot line and the characters. Itching to read more of his books.

It took me a few years and several attempts to finally read Name of the Wind, and I only was able to finish it I feel because I listened to the audiobook, so it was easier to get through the more plodding moments and the narrator is great. I have a lot of issues with the book, including a lot of mixed feelings on Kvothe, but I’m glad I ended up finishing it because some of the sequences I really loved. I do feel like you can tell reading it tho that Rothfuss thinks he’s an A R T I S T, ha.

I likes Clown in a Cornfield 2 a lot. I think I might have even given it 5 stars? I'd have to check. But, I definitely liked the first one more. I'm interested to read the third one when it comes out.
I also enjoyed The Quiet Tenant, but there were definitely parts I wasn't loving. It's my usual genre, though, so that may have played into my acceptance of tropes and stuff. Lol

Fourth Wing is the only one in this video that I read, it took me like 3 days. I loved that book. Bought the second one as soon as it came out and again, devoured it. Maybe it’s because I am older and it took me back to my school days and there’s dragons, parents who aren’t truthful, who knows? Books are like wine, don’t read it now, but in 10 years you might read it and actually enjoy it. If the first 10 pages of the book don’t grab me, I put it down and move on. Life is too short to read books you aren’t into.

1q84: it’s actually a bind up that you have. It’s three books. It has some REALLY interesting parts, and some gross Stephen king pedo parts. I wish it were a movie, since it would have to cut out a lot of the unnecessary stuff and get to the good parts. I’d love to see who they cast as Aomame. Her character was super interesting to me

Hi there, thanks for your videos, which are always fun to watch. I was also disappointed by The Troop. I've been reading horror books recommended by booktubers recently as I hadn't read any horror apart from The Shining 30 years ago, and was disappointed by several, including Head Full of Ghosts and The Cabin at the End of the World by Paul Tremblay, The Last House on Needless Street by Catriona Ward, but I thought "Let the right one in" by John Ajvide Lindqvist was excellent, have you read it? (both fans of Steven King and Scandinavian crime novels should love it). Concerning Murakami, I would recommend reading The WInd-Up Bird Chronicles first (certainly before 1Q84).

  • @TheHammy1987

I finally found my people :D You're the first person on booktube I found who did not like The Troop. I picked it up because everybody and their grandma rave about it and I really did not like it. The characters were flat, the story could have been told in half the time and was stretched out by gore - just for the sake of gore and nothing else. I do not understand the internet's fascination with that book. However, the writing style was okay, so I will read another book by Cutter just to see if he actually has it in him to write convincing and distinct characters...

I’ve read both Fourth Wing and Iron Flame (my wife did as well) and they both have a very good plot which I really enjoyed. The story was the best part. But some of the characters were a little one dimensional and the author really struggles at describing environment and the landscape. She is a great romance author and the story pulls you in, but I got lost when there was a lack of knowing where things are, what they look like, and the ambiance was lost in intense scenes.

I didn't like Nick Cutter's books either, BUT i DO enjoy his alter ego, Craig Davidson's books. I recommend "Saturday Night Ghost Club" and "Cataract City" - you might like his other writing rather than the horror he writes under the name Nick Cutter

Kafka on the shore is one of my faves. IQ84 is too long.

Here to say that I liked Iron Flame!!! Character is labeled as whiny but like meh its in character and lowkey relatable. BUT maybe I am just insufferably complainy, ha!

One popular book I just couldn’t get through was Harlem shuffle, I know it’s very well received, but the story just doesn’t do it for me. The writing itself is beautiful but I couldn’t connect with any characters or world building

I'd be interested in hearing some of your favorite horror movies. Maybe you can focus only on book adaptations if you want to keep the channel exclusively for book content! Stephen King has plenty of adaptations worth talking about, for better or worse lol

Do you like nonfiction, too? Nonfiction is very sick.

I agree it's tough to enjoy a book when the protagonist is so annoying. Haven't read The name of the Wind, but honestly nothing ive heard makes me want to read it.
A series where i kind of hated the main character is Skyward. Spansa is the worst. I still read all the books and i liked them enough, but they could have been way better
