Loved hearing about y'all first hiking experience, it's funny because I'm sure a lot of people do the same thing. My first day hike to McAfee I took almost every piece of camera gear I owned with me. I was sucking wind just coming back down to the parking lot with that crazy load.
Geez, my knees hurt watching you climb the rocks near the top of your climb (I think it was near the top, don't actually know!). Anyway, it looked brutal and it most definitely wasn't flat.
It's always hard hiking with a team because you don't want to hold anyone up. You've got a great partner who is patient and understanding. He's there for you just as you are there for him when he needs it. You've got this.
