    With the jump test, Thunder is 18, so he has many years of getting used to quick movements and the way you deal with him. Young horses will of course be more flighty, that doesn't mean they are a bad horse. Horses are naturally "Flight" animals and if you show up at a property and start jumping around near the horse when it doesn't know you, especially when you are standing behind its head, it might flinch as a natural reaction. Of course there is a fine line between natural and crazy. Anyway, I wouldn't do this to a horse I didn't know. There are other ways to find out what it's nature is like :)

      @BeckysHomestead  9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Dakota Beautyy Thunder responded the same exact way when he was 2. There nature is something their born with from day 1, either calm or flighty, it's a range. We choose calm.

      Draft horses are "cold-blooded" which is a term that means they're much calmer.

      A good horse might be a little under weight, or a little shy, or a little skittish. A good horse is what you make out of a horse. You can take a perfectly formed horse, with no feet or personality problems, but in the wrong hands can become not so perfect because care isnt as good or bad behaviors are introduced. Or you can take a horse with a semi- poor topline , not so good feet, a little thin, shy a few bad behaviors and in the right hands that horse can be a gem. Just educate yourself before choosing a horse, having experience as well. If your new to horses, then you need to go to barns take lessons, and learn horse care and training etc. Important to work with various horses for a while.

    I love how you say "if it's not trained. No." 😂 uhmmm well my horse is in the process of being trained and I find "perfect easy horses" boring. But you do you hahaha it's just like... Nothing to work with

      Well if it's your first horse, the horse should be trained and no where near green. Unless, you know how to train a horse.

    Love to see the pride of ownership.

  • @qhsperson

    There are plenty of good videos on youtube about horse conformation, what to look for, what to avoid, etc. This is not one of those videos.
    There are some very important things involved in owning horses. First, they are very expensive. When I got my first horse, a bale of hay ran about one dollar, and I was paying over $7/bale when my last horse died.
    Then there's medical treatment, nothing beyond what's required yearly. You'll have to have the means to carry the horse to the vet or pay the vet to come to the house. And in an emergency, you'll learn the value of owning your own truck and trailer.
    If the horse works, you add the cost of the farrier and all the gear/tack you'll be using. You might be able to pick up a good used saddle/bridle, but otherwise you'll be spending hundreds right there.
    Second, horses are very dangerous, even the nice ones. They can hurt, cripple or kill you easily and without malice. With malice, they can be worse than a lot of wild animals since they can get you even when you're behind them. If you're careless or too trusting, you can be stepped on, crushed, knocked down and trampled, kicked, bitten. The best horse vet I knew (he worked mostly for a large racing stud) was put in hospital by a pet mare that he turned his back on.
    Third, under no circumstances think that reading a how-to book is enough for you to buy and train a young horse. Your chance of getting it right is slim, and you will end up ruining the horse. If you simply must buy a horse or die of sadness, look for a well-trained horse around 8 years or older, preferably older if you don't have much experience. A riding stable or school horse is a good choice.
    Fourth, when you're actually ready to buy, take someone with you who has real knowledge and experience, and if your friend says no, then accept it. And don't take at face value what the seller says; there are plenty of dishonest people who fancy themselves as "horse traders," and they enjoy tricking honest people out of their money.
    Fifth, when you've narrowed it down to one or two possible horses, that's the time for the medical. If the seller doesn't have current medical records (vaccinations, etc.) for the horse, be willing to pay for the vet check yourself. Especially if you're planning on paying thousands for a horse, the more you have in hand about the horse's health and fitness, the better off you'll be. (Keep in mind that it costs just as much to feed a cheap horse and it does a horse with good breeding and the papers to prove it--and it's a lot easier to sell a good, registered horse if things go badly.)
    Sixth, where will you be keeping the horse? Backyard? Riding stable? At home, you will need somewhere to keep the feed and tack and other necessaries, shelter for the horse, and well-fenced pasture. You don't need a big barn, but you'll need something that will keep several bales of hay dry. You'll also need water handy, especially in the summer when the horse will drink several gallons of water a day. Don't count on toting 5-gallon buckets of water. Run a hose and get a large plastic garden tub.
    My best suggestion for newbies is to find a good riding stable where you can take lessons on horse care as well as riding. Horses are the best, but they're not for the casual owner.
    Do yourself and the horse a favor and don't go in blind.

    Please don't wrap the rope around your hand. If you handle multiple horses every day, the chance that you will some day go for a drag is maximized. Even if a horse doesn't bolt and drag you, the littlest of things, such as a horse stumbling badly while you are leading it like that can hurt your hand.

    Oh Becky. I'm sorry my dear but some of your information is incorrect. I have been around many types and dispositions of horses. My mare is hot blooded, highly intelligent and a sweet heart.
    I rescued her. She a remedial horse and very sensitive to her surroundings. She was still a filly when I bought her and had a lot to learn. With gentleness and understanding she has become a great mare.
    She has good ground manners, number one rule to stand still at all costs. When you have a lead rope in your hand your horse should not be moving unless you intend it to do so. Otherwise this can be very dangerous.
    Your little guy doesn't do this. Curiosity is a good thing but again only by the handlers permission.
    A horse also has to respect your space. Needs to know you care deeply for him and show this with a good rub but stay in his space. Again your little guy doesn't do this.
    The best information to tell anyone who intends to buy a horse is, get good quality information, write everything down, get to know a good quality farrier, a good livestock vet AND most importantly remember green on green makes black and blue. If you are not familiar with horses go to a working good quality horse barn and volunteer your services. Watch the horses see how they interact with each other and with their handlers.
    Hope this information will be of value to all of you. Have a great and wonderful day.😄

    I have found when I'm looking for a horse.....WHAT U WANT IT FOR: hunter, jumper, eventing, dressage, ect. I want a horse that's full of spunk and energy so when I got my first horse I asked for a LEASE TO BUY. Meaning I lease him for a few months and made sure I wanted him and than bought him. Best way.....if you go out once the horse is one way at the farm you go pick him up he's completely different at your place.....ik my horse or years before I even considered buying him took lessons and spent time with him. That's the best way I found know what you want:
    Conformation for a trail horse is different compared to a 3 day event horse
    I've gotten plenty of horses with no top line that easy to fix TAKES TIME but trotting with proper head set does it
    But otherwise great advise about everything else

      +...:::JessieluvsGirls:::... You may want a Gypsy Vanner X Clydie or a Gypsy Vanner or just simply a Clydie. People identify them as draft horses, which they kind of are, but they are also great riding horses, and can manage most weights.

    • @hannahculley301
      @hannahculley301 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +...:::JessieluvsGirls:::... It is really good to lease before you own, as well as having lots of support. I would suggest least a horse for a few months at a pony club/barn. And see what it is like. And you can use your barn's equitment so you don't waste money if you aren't going to keep it. Also, size doesn't matter!

    • @allihersberger7321
      @allihersberger7321 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +...:::JessieluvsGirls:::... Another option is a quarter horse or paint. They are great beginner horses and are strong to hold almost any rider. Try to find a male that has been castrated(gelding) too because they have the best temperment for a beginner!

    yes! finally someone who mentions financial part of having a horse.
    So many young people think oh if i just buy a shetland pony that will be cheaper. No the stables, food, feet, shots and all that stuff is just the same. The buy price might be lower in pony's that doesn't mean you are done with paying money for the horse... i get so annoyed when people say i have it easy with 2 pony's. Uhm i pay quite some money to stall them where i do. I pay more then most shetland owners and i pay just as much as my friend who has 2 big horses so... stop thinking small horses are cheaper there are only cheap in the buying part peeps... a small horse needs food,care and a home too.

    All I gotta say is know ur level or rider and know what u want. I do eventing and hunters plus western events. And teach riding lessons I'm always looking for what I want, I never have minded a hot horse, or spooky horses. I'm at the level where I get thrown every naughty horse and pony in the barn. From rearing, bucking, and wanting to kill u. THE JUMP TEST IS BULLSHIT unless u r a beginner. I get the worst of the worst and flip them from advanced only-dead beginner horses. It's all in the training and time u put in to the horse. I'd rather a horse that fits my needs at the time than a horse I need to train of course. But KNOW UR BUDGET!!! I have ottbs one has shoes and is fine one is barefoot and is fine!! Know what ur getting urself into anyways. Geldings are usually the best bet for a beginner but some mares are as well. Know how ur horse was trained before a ranch horse won't wanna be near u but a hunter or equation horse would most likely wanna be close. All I gotta say!!! Show horses vs ranch vs paddock ponies vs trail horses all have different personalities and way they r brought up!!!

    Most of the information was good very good , the jump test is a very unsafe thing to do to a horse that don''t respect you it has nothing do with it temperament

    any cracked or chipped hooves are fixable. Adopt, don't shop. A tip for new horses, even though she stated valid ones, Since you (kids probably watching this) aren new to horses pick a horse that isn't as energetic, a bit older, etc. Older horses are trained enough and know the program better than younger more energetic horses! The older the horse the more he can teach you. If you don't do something right the horse will know and will most likely stop until you get it right. Let the horse teach you what he was trained to do!!! Never buy a horse that isn't broken in, a stallion, etc if you aren't a 'professional'. Stallions are more work and can be dangerous if you don't know what you're doing. (any horse can but stallions get worse)

    My horse had cracked hooves because of moisture in the pasture. Not actually our fault. They are bare foot and they always have feet trimmed every six weeks. We took all.precautions but she still got cracks. No hate. Just saying

    Becky, what is the over all annual cost of health and maintenance of a horse in general? I understand there are unforeseen veterinarian expenses, but i'm just interested in the regular recurring expenses overall like feed, shots, trimming, floating, etc. per year. Thanks so much!

    I've always loved horses scents I was a little girl. But we lived in Evansville Indiana and could not have them in the city limits. Now that I'm older and have some health troubles with arthritis and not allowed to take any medications do to my spleen busting almost 3 years ago. Ive found that working with animals like basic day to day car, and over all time spent with them helps me with pain. It also helps keep me active so I can lose more weight. I've tried to find places where I can volunteer my time to take care of animals but its a no go so fare. I stumbled onto your videos last year I think. It was the one showing how to hook up a donkey to a cart. You make a great teacher by the way. Thanks for giving me something to at least watch so I can learn how to take care of horses and donkeys myself. I was even playing with the idea of getting a mini donkey to pal around with. lol My husband would a have a cow if I did.

    How to buy a horse? That's easy. How not to buy a horse would be a far more difficult topic. To buy a horse look into a pair of big expressive eyes and how can you possibly resist?

    ok so u are saying that I should get a horse or pony just like that one? Well if I get a horse it does not have to be perfect. My friends and other people say how ur barn should not have green horses (green horses mean Untrained) that people ride and train but someone has to train the horse and they say that they have no green horses there. Get a horse u want not what someone else wants for u find the best horse or pony for u
