This, my friends, was the "Maracanazzo". People like to say that the 7 - 1 was saddest, but believe me my friends, what happened in 1950 set the course of those players. Most of them died in misery and suffered for decades because of one goal. And as a brazilian I fell ashamed for it. The goal keeper, "Barbosa", coudn't talk about that day without crying. He lived in misery for years. Forgotten. Old journalists used to say that the silence in the Maracanã stadium was the loudest ever. David Luiz lost by 7 - 1, but he can buy himself a drink now and then and he still plays in one of today great teams. He is going to be fine.

I think it's because Uruguay's underdog victory isn't the more interesting part of the story - it's the massive egomaniacal rise and fall of Brazil. If a sports movie ends with a loss, there is always something bittersweet. Like the Jamaican bobsled team walking through the finishing line in Cool Runnings (based on 1988 Winter Olympics). This was just a spectacular disaster.

I read somewhere that the Uruguayan captain, Carlos Varela, bought a bunch of Brazilian newspapers early that Sunday... spread them on the bathroom floor... and had his teammates urinate on the paper that strongly predicted a Brazilian win. This was a great psychological move on his part. Alcides Ghighia, scorer of the second and winning goal, once said that only three people had ever silenced the Maracana stadium: Frank Sinatra, the Pope, and himself. LOL

Such a feat about Barbosa (the keeper) showed how politically rigged is the CBF.
They blamed the keeper instead of the whole team, as if he was the only guilty of this. How much goals did Brazil scored in five plays before that "finale" : 21!!!
But since goalkeepers are poorly treated in the country of artists, they're considered second rate players because since youth, the less talented of the team was "awarded" to keep the goal.
It showed how racists and blockheaded were the Brazilians because until Julio Cesar in 2010, never a black skinned keeper had ever kept brazilian goal. They did such a hateful campaign to pin down the poor Barbosa for rest of his life, even forbade him to come close to Brazil training camp, by pure superstition.
    Rest in Peace Moacir

That draw against Switzerland was actually of great importance.
Uruguay were inspired by the tactical setup used by Karl Rappan, which thwarted Brazil to such an extent.

it's an exageration to say Uruguay is the greatest footballing nation since they only have 2 world cups when brazil, germany and italy have more but it is true to say that their greatness is usually undervalued in modern times by people who have no knowledge of world cup history and don't realise they have won more than "greats" like england, france, spain and holland! considering how small their nation is and their population, only 3 million!, they have contributed alot to the beautiful game!

4 world TITLES. 2 World Cups and 2 Olympic Gold medals from when professional aged players participated in it. But I don't know about contributing to the "beautiful game". That probably died in 1970. They did arguably contributed the most to South American GAMESMANSHIP though. Brazilian 'CATIMBA', 'jeitinho', Argentinian ANTIFUTBOL , 'MILONGA', Uruguayan 'VIVEZA CRIOLLA'. Does that make football beautiful? Well, to answer that question, one needs ask himself, is the COPA LIBERTADORES DA AMERICA one of the most beautiful passionate football competitions in the world? Maybe not in the seventies with the military dictatorships ploughing violence from police even on players, but certainly for most of it's existence.

I don’t know nobody in the world who feel more proud of their country as we are, and never will get near to understand it, we just love our country and our selves as community. that’s is demonstrated in many occasions by our footballers, they just do whatever they have to do to make our country happy and represent as much better as possible in every occasion. And that it represents us a lot because football for us, in our country it’s the maximum it’s like religion.
Doesn’t matter if they get injured, or if they weren’t playing too much in their teams, the do the impossible to reach the level when they wear our beautiful blue sky shirt.
Even when professional footballers, son of Uruguayans born in a different country they feel the Uruguay shirt and want to play for Uruguay, that is amazing! Then maybe you guys can understand a bit what is Uruguay...

Things ended bad for Brazil that time.
It was supposed to be the perfect setting.
The country were the only one that volunteered to host the tournament, build the world's biggest stadium ever and had a lot of great players to form the team.
2 years before the world cup, a brazilian club (Vasco da Gama) had won a tournament playing against some other south americans club that were national champions back in their countries (like River Plate in Argentina and Nacional in Uruguay).
A year later, Brazil's national team won the Copa América.
And if all of this wasn't enough to show why Brazil was the #1 bet to everybody, you have those players like Barbosa, Danilo, Zizinho, Jair da Rosa Pinto, Ademir.
Only because of the coach, players like Didi and Nilton Santos were substitutes and others like Domingos da Guia, Leonidas da Silva and Heleno de Freitas were dismissed from the "Seleção", as we called it.
For Uruguay, that was, without any shadow of doubt, the most important day of their history in the sport, period.
But for Brazil, it's still the most sad day regarding Football.

Brazil is not a humble team, that's why things like this happens, I am peruvian and Uruguay is in my heart for ever, I like their strength they put in every field they play, I prefer Uruguay millions of times so far, Go for more in Qatar my dear Uruguay! You are shine in the arrogancy.

I still think this is much worse than 7-1. In 1950, Brazil defeated Sweden by 7-1 and Spain by 6-1, while Uraguay only draw 2-2 and won 3-2 against the same opponents. One would say it's like a guarantee win for Brazil in 1950. In 2014, Brazil only had like 50% chance against Germany before the game

A realistic opinion, being impartial, I think what broke the brazilian side apart was not only the tactical German, which totally deserved due to being analytical in that moment (I bet some other nations would instead be defensive after 2-0 due to the pressure historical football relates to Brazil, so bravo to Germany), but the pressure, we must understand that every brazilian player in that field and every brazilian wouldn't ever accept losing a world cup in Brazil.

Yes I agree. Brazilian players are always subject to great pressure from the local press. They talk like the Brazilian players are just trash when they lose a game. I always dislike it when some irrelevant people who are not good enough to take part in something just keep on pointing fingers at people.

7-1 wasnt expected, but Germany defeating Brazil was expected, we were without Neymar and Silva. In 1950 nobody expected this result

Uruguay is the greatest nation in the history of this sport. If you truly want to know who the best country in football is, just divide World Cup titles / population.
