Glad you're on the mend. This winter in the South is a good place to see jays if you put peanuts out as the acorn crop (their main staple food) was non existent. They will store as many peanuts as they can get in their crop then take them away and cache them for later in the winter. I think as long as you keep putting peanuts out they will come this year. I'm lucky with the jays as I can photograph them from a bedroom window as our garden is on a slope (not so good for pushing the mower though!). They are beautiful but skittish birds and I am glad you are getting to watch/film and photograph them.

Pleased to read you are on the mend Darren. Having your smell back already is a good sign, I have a friend who took six months to get theirs back. Great insights in your video too, and the previous one. With the Black Friday discounts and Sony cashback the Sony 200-600 had £503 off so my lovely wife bought it for me for Christmas. I’ll have to head out though as I’m lucky if I see a sparrow in my garden. 😂

Hope your feeling better Darren. If you have a home bargains near you get some bags of sunflower hearts and their ultimate fat balls. The birds love them by me and have loads of different species coming in to feed.
Fantastic! I was going to comment maybe move the logs (even this is from a last month ago but seeing as you did its a defunct comment to make now) I've never had something as exotic as a Jay in the garden, although for about two years we had a one footed coal tit who would bring its young to the feeder and teach them, we named him/her buddy. Our normal guests are a bold robin, scores of house sparrows, the odd mob of starlings and occasionally a punk rocker looking blue tit. This video being a month ago, I'm glad your better. This video has given me a few ideas of my own to try in my tiny garden to see if I can attract more birds to take photos of. Cheers Darren. Jen

Yes the Jays are very skittish birds, but like yours ours return more frequently now ... can I suggest some black Sunflower seeds and sunflower hearts as they attract many species especially Nuthatches...... Hi Paul, My wife tested positive 1st and I followed exactly 7 days later. She was fine, apart from the fatigue, where I had more cold / flu symptoms with fatigue thrown in. The worst part was loosing smell and taste, but thankfully they’ve returned. I’m sure your wife will only have mild symptoms and likewise if you catch it as well. You are the busiest sick person I’ve ever seen! I hope you are continuing to improve. I gather that it can be a nasty illness. We’ve escaped so far - fully vaccinated and boosted - and have fingers firmly crossed 🤞 for the future. My husband isn’t well, so we are being careful. I have enjoyed your bird photos very much. My setup doesn’t compare, and you can see the difference. I have a squirrel feeding post and the regulars drop by daily. Do you have chickadees in England? They love peanuts. Our jays are big and aggressive, and they will get into stand-offs with the squirrels. Unfortunately, we also have a cat that comes by to hunt, so I’ve had to move the squirrel feeder so he can’t sneak up on them while feeding. Hi Kathleen, To be honest I only had the symptoms of mild flu, but the worst symptoms were fatigue and loss of taste and smell. That was hideous. We don’t get chickadees here (not to my knowledge anyway) but they look like beautiful little birds. I hope your husband is not too poorly and please send him my best regards. This is how I discovered you when you did your first lot of bird videos. I've got a really small garden so my birds are a lot closer to me which is good as I only have the 100-400mm Sony lens. I haven't seen jays in years and then I caught sight of one in a woods around Stirling in the late summer, I tried a bit of ninja sneaking from bush to bush but it was wise to me and kept skipping from tree to tree to keep its distance until it buggered off completely. Too many ravens around my back garden for any chance of them coming near. I hope your feeling well again by now👍

I had it back in November 2020 and it knocked me off my feet. It took until May this year to get back on an even keel following Long Covid.

I have been leaving dry dog food out, that attracts ravens. Some get within a couple of metres of me now.
