Thanks for making the video. It was useful for most of it. I bought the same replacement plug. I successfully repaired and tested my Etymotic hf3 and the colours are completely different to your video. From outside in, goes green, blue, red, copper corresponding to sleeve, tip, ring1, ring2. Tip = Left audio = bLue ring 1 = right audio = Red ring 2 = ground = copper sleeve = mic = green
Hi : I have the same connector but the in cable of a Klipsch image one headphones has red/green/red and green/copperx2. but in the centre of the red and green cable is a white cable. Where do you solder this on too ????
Where do you buy the wires? i've been trying to find headphone wire with mic that separate into individual audio and mic. Trying to repair my Sennheiser G4ME Zero.
My 4 pole jack has a piece that is small coming out of the middle ,one tap out to the left ,and then the big one with the hole in it .the cable coming out has a copper, green ,red, and in the middle of the copper a very small white one. How do you connect this ? ( my earbuds are dr dre beats )
Hi, I am repairing Dr Dre headphones, they have 5 wires! Copper, red, green, red/copper stripe and green/cooper stripe. That is one extra, I assume I could join two together but which two?
Would it be possible for me to make a phone headset(with mic) work on a PC? Like if i used a "MX EP Stereo 3.5 mm with 4 Pole Jack" from the video and soldered 2 wires with 3.5mm jacks to it, 1 for the headphones output and 1 for the microphone's input?
Thanks man, I've had some troubles with my connector because was 4 pins but a different design and my headphones are only stereo, the haven't got mic. Finally I got tired and make them mono headphones, only two soldering points beacuse it's only while my new headphones arrive from UK.
I have red, blue, brown, white and yellow with copper shield. I'm not sure which is which. I have a jabra headset with microphone and the connector I have is the same gold one you showed on this video.
Cool video, thanks for posting. My cable coding is a bit different: 1 blue 1 red 1 red/copper stripped 1 green 1 copper How do I figure these out to solder on a TRRS connector?
How would you connect these 4 wires RED BLUE GREEN and COPPER to its control unit from the jack..? Coz I have only to points there and 4 set of wires how.. Please tell
Hello, is it possible to put a 4 pole 3.5mm jack on earphones that need only 3 (without mic) ? I have one 3.5mm jack with 4 pole and I was wondering if I can replace my Bose broken earphones jack with it
great video! i have a question tho. im repairing a pair of turtle beach headphones (the xl1's to be exact). they have a white fiberous thread running through them. is this the same as the yellow thread in you video...useless i mean? i dont know of any fiber wire and i dont know anything about fiber-optics. anything you could inform me of would really help. i game a lot when im not working and cant afford to just go buy a new pair. thanks
Hey im trying to fix my dre beats they are the urbeats and they actually have 5 wires! One green, green and copper, copper, red, red and copper im not to sure where to place these can you help
Hi when I was trying to solder it the solder wasn’t sticking to the plug or wire .in the end the plastic next to the metal started melting and just became a mess. Can you suggest something I could do? I’m new to soldering p.s I’m using a 30 w solder iron
I fixed mine myself but with another factory made broken aux cable. just find the right cables(color helps) and solder them to each other. or just burn the tips and twist in pairs.
Thanks, works perfectly for me except the little remote control. I can't start / stop / take a call anymore. But microphone and earbuds work. Do you have any idea ?
hey, thank you for the help i was just in dubt about wires: red is for left audio, green is for right audio red and green is for mass copper is for microphone? right?
thx man you helped me a lot i had problems with this jack i didnt know where to solder some wires red and green i got almost right the red wire was/is higher than blue wire and i had/have the copper wire or ground where red and green wire or mic wire shood have been
I bought the same designed plugs for repairing my friend's headset. I gave it up, because the solder didn't attached to the plug's rings. It dropped down from it...I don't know what to do...I used to repair stereo jack plugs, even mine all by myself, but headsets are making me nuts...
I'm pretty sure you were supposed to crimp the black outer sheath of the wires into the "wings" at the top of the connector. That way when something yanks on the wire, it puts pressure on the outer sheath instead of the soldered connections.
Well actually my earphone is broken from the junction where switch for attaining calls and all are provided.the wires are tore from that very junction.can you please help me out?
hi there.. i saw the video, cuz im trying to use a heaphone wire (with 3 colors copper green and red ) and set it on a mini jack trrs.. it´s that possible? will work?
I just trued to do this. I think I ruined three repair connectors. Its sorta tough to do this tiny soldering. These wires are finicky too. They don't soak up solder easily. Oh well ill continue trying. I have a good soldering station at least.
This seems like a really nice video and just the one I need. I just have one question. Are you able to test if it will work before soldering the cables on to the metal by holding them against it?
MDR Electronics So I guess I must have done something wrong then since no sound comes out when I hold the cables(twinned, not solderd at the ends) to the metal? Do you have to solder a bit on them first, at the ends, and then touch the metal covered cables to the 3.5mm contacts connection metal?
A suggestion for all people having trouble with color cables, connect the plug to an mp3/phone and play music, make different combinations without soldering until you find the right one :) (remember to try the mic and the keys before soldering) And put the back cup on the wire BEFORE soldering, it's a common error for all the starters and when it happens it's a shame.
very well explained. I like the diagram the most. question is, does this steps work or is the diagram the same for the jack with volume control? Maybe it is since the Mic is in the volume control as well? Please clarify so I know how to fix once I have a broken audio jack.
Lets say I want to use a 3-pole jack with my 4-wire headphones. What do I do with the left over red-green wire? If the wires are in contact with eachother after soldering, is it bad? One more thing, the cable of my headphones is made of a cloth-like material. How can I remove it since it might not be easily removed like the plastic in the video? I'm going to perform this later this week and this is useful. Thanks!
Cheers for the tutorial! Got my Tritton detonators working again (xbox headset) However the wires were different colours so I had to trial and error where they went, plus the mics dodgy. But as headphones they work great!.
hello :I am repairing awei headphones, they have 5 wires! Copper, red, green, red/copper stripe and green/cooper stripe. That is one extra, I assume I could join two together but which two?
I followed your instructions and my sound and mic work. Thanks. However, there is one issue: My volume and start/stop/phone buttons, built into the cord, no longer work. What did I do wrong?
I fixed my sound but my mic still doesnt work from my trutle beach px21. I cut the cable in 2. I got rid of the white plastic cover and twisted the copper parts to eachother, whats wrong :s ???
my replacement jack is different, i have part sticking out, instead of 3 different part, so i have 2 little tubes , and then a tinny arm branching off...it's silver color also...
Hi there! Have you heard related to the Tube Cash Exposure? I stumbled upon it on Google Search and found out great stuff about it. Some of my good friend also encourage me to look at it
A couple of things : some fluxite/solder paste would have made a far neater job of the joints. You'd be amazed at how well (and fast) things bond with a smear of it prior to starting work. Also, most jack plugs have a crimp which helps prevent the wires being yanked off their joints accidentally ( you actually soldered the last wire to it in fact). This should have been gently crimped with pliers around the outer insulation of the cable.
Been working in the Electronics Industry for over 40 years doing repairs to component level .. if this is an example of your expertise and abilities I would never recommend anyone to visit you or follow your advice. I realise that the video is 3 years old or more and that you may have improved since then but your video personally gives me no confidence in your abilities or that you know what you are doing!
Alright, I do NOT know anything about this stuff, However can you tell me how to solder a one end mic headset to a dual end so that i can plug it into my pc and have headset mic?
You don't need to try to remove the insulation, using a match or anything like that. Tin the conductor with a bit of solder and the insulation will be gone there.
I have a gaming headset for my pc. Whereever I plug it in I kinda have to put force down on it and it will work. but the red - microphone cable now does not work. any ideas?
Can you kindly show us how to connect the microphone from any cell phone ear set to a cell battery to power it independently. I would like to connect the mini mic to a Fiio E5 mini headphone amp. What wires would power the microphone? Thank you.
i have the same problem, i only have 3 wires: blue red and copper. in your video its 4 wires. how can i fix mine? my headphone is a philips oneal the stretch, it has volume, next/previous control, and mic but 3 wires only?
hey first of all thanks for the video! but i have 1 question, when i stripped the cables i have a green, red blue and copper! is the blue one the same that the combination?
I have six wires, 3 copper, 1 green, 1 red, 1 blue-green. My earphones have flatwires. also the jack doesnt have the metal thing for the copper wire. Help please?
i have also a blue, red, and copper wires. where should i connect them? in your video its 4 wires. i only have 3 wires and my headphone has a mic, volume control, and next/previous control. please help me
PLEASE HEEEEEEEEEEEELP!!!!!!!!! i want to make a mod to my headset, adding a 3.5 mm 4 pole FEMALE jack, for removable cable, but dont know which pole goes to which speaker and mic...... ANY LINK, DIAGRAM, FORUM will be appreciated
Hi i just watched your video but my problem its different i got a motorola Earpiece Headset PTT for 2 way radio and i wanted to fix it i've got red cooper green and blue wire but got no idea where they go as there is a little switch board that i should solder the wires onto please help me as i need it for work tonight IMG_1822.JPG
I suppose your red and green are the same as on the video. You just have to unwrap the copper one off the white and separate them, and your white should be the "red and green" one. Judging by what you said, you have 2 copper wires, just connect them together on the jack, it should be okay... Let me know if you try!
After watching this video, i realized that i still have money to buy a new one.
Thanks for making the video. It was useful for most of it. I bought the same replacement plug.
I successfully repaired and tested my Etymotic hf3 and the colours are completely different to your video. From outside in, goes green, blue, red, copper corresponding to sleeve, tip, ring1, ring2.
Tip = Left audio = bLue
ring 1 = right audio = Red
ring 2 = ground = copper
sleeve = mic = green
didn't' understand a thing, but by far the best background music on youtube
whats the best gauge solder to use for a job like this?
Why didn't you use the shrink tubing over the connections before screwing on the outer case?
+Echo6Bravo because he doesn't know what he's doing?
+Echo6Bravo The rubber casing sits inside the outer housing, so when its screwed on the rubber is already there.
Hi : I have the same connector but the in cable of a Klipsch image one headphones has red/green/red and green/copperx2. but in the centre of the red and green cable is a white cable. Where do you solder this on too ????
Let us check with our Engineer!!

Damn, u just saved my 60 dollar headphone..tq bro, keep it up
Would doing this work with the Beats Mixr mic cable? I want to be able to use it with my PC, but the mic only works when I am using my iPod.

I have a pair of SOUL earbuds and the wire coding is red, yellow, green, and blue. any idea on what the coding for these are?
No idea!!
exactly what my problem is. but i've researched that the blue is actually for the right channel. i just dunno if it applies too
I fixed mine myself but with another factory made broken aux cable. just find the right cables(color helps) and solder them to each other. or just burn the tips and twist in pairs.
Hmmm. A metal cover and not insulating the wires? You scraped a lot of insulation off them. And how to stop the wire being pulled out again?
Hi there, thanks for this wonderful video! Is it possible to connect the wires of 4 pole to a 3 pole plug?
Yes it is....but you won't get MIC out...
Thanks, works perfectly for me except the little remote control. I can't start / stop / take a call anymore. But microphone and earbuds work. Do you have any idea ?
The mic wire might be lose or disconnectted from the pinthat is you Ep or aux

You can use the following video!!
You don't need to try to remove the insulation, using a match or anything like that. Tin the conductor with a bit of solder and the insulation will be gone there.
i would suggest ruubbing the wires betwen thumb and index finger to remove the burned plastic as a blade may very well cut the wire
Plz help my mic for major2 marshall is not working
Sorry, I meant to say a female version of the "MX EP Stereo 3.5 mm with 4 Pole Jack"

on my skullcandy in have red wire, green wire.blue wire, combination of blue and copper and a combination of red and copper.
I have a red wire, blue wire and a green wire! Help!!! These also have a mic but there is only 3 wires! D:
Yes it can be soldered back!!
I suppose your red and green are the same as on the video. You just have to unwrap the copper one off the white and separate them, and your white should be the "red and green" one. Judging by what you said, you have 2 copper wires, just connect them together on the jack, it should be okay... Let me know if you try!
