  • YOUR ULTIMATE ARCTIC ADVENTURE BEGINS ON THE FABLED DEMPSTER HIGHWAY.
Long ribbons of road stretch 740 kilometres from Dawson City in Yukon to Inuvik in the Northwest Territories. You'll traverse stunning landscapes through the boreal forest, crossing Canada's largest river - the mighty Mackenzie - out on to the tundra, and onto the Inuvik-Tuktoyaktuk highway, ending right at the edge of the Arctic Ocean. This Canadian road trip is an epic adventure as it's the only year round public highway that crosses the Arctic Circle and brings you to the end of the continent. It's a rewarding journey and a spectacular experience.
On the Northwest Territories portion of the route, you'll experience stunning scenery. See timeless landscapes while passing through picturesque communities rich with Indigenous culture such as Fort McPherson and Tsiigehtchic. Eagle Plains is the halfway point but just beyond, you'll cross the Arctic Circle. Don't forget to take a picture of the signpost! Some Northwest Territories' territorial campgrounds along the Dempster are Nataiinlaii, Gwich'in, Jàk and Happy Valley, located in Inuvik, which can easily accommodate RVs. Take this one-of-a-kind journey with as many stops as you wish - there's a lot to see.
The journey ends where the road does - Tuktoyaktuk, home of the world's largest pingo. Seek out local Inuvialuit artists and make sure to dip your toes in the Arctic Ocean! If you love a good road trip, there is no better destination than the top of the world right here in the NWT.

Wow. Did the trip on my motorcycle in 1985! Rode entire way in the wide tracks sunk in the tundra by the frequent 18 wheelers - almost the only other vehicles i saw. No road to tutoyaktuk then… no tour agencies or hotels in inuvik. 3 hour delay as I waited for a herd of caribou to cross the road…. Incredible journey ! Thanks for the memories

8:57 - hey it's Grandma's Kitchen. Had a flat tire repaired there and ate two musk ox burgers with two cokes while I waited for the repair to be done. Took a bathtub splash in the Arctic Ocean too.

While in Dawson City go up to Midnight Dome to view the entire city from above. Spectacular view of city, the Klondike and Yukon rivers. Was there in June 2019.

Thank you for your information, exceptional, providing excellant information on everything. Spent 20 years Yukon, and yes went to Inuvik and Tuk, by plane, no road, stayed at the Pingo Park Loadge, an old rig drilling camp. Could have walked around Tuk and left, but had a room booked.....never left for a week - how come, well the lodge needed a cook for a conference.......got intoduced to whale blubber. Did drive to Inuvik. Road has shale which is a very fine slivered rock, cuts tires......lower tire pressure for a softer ride. The NWT sign and roadway is also a runway for planes....so you get off when you see a plane. Your photos of the rivers, lakes and landscape is also excellant ...... you tell it as is. Thanks for all.

It's better and much more exciting to drive the Dempster yourself. I did, twice in June 2017 and 19.

He didn't mention the suffocating swarms of mosquitoes, so I'm wondering if climate change has killed them off?
