    I liked the video - short and helpful. I have changed many wheels in my garage and driveway over the years and have learned a little tip that I would like to share:
    If you make the bolt / nut at the bottom-most position the last one taken off and the first one put back on, then you don't have to deal with the dreaded wheel wobble, or wheel falling off the hub. Applying this technique will allow gravity to help you by keeping the wheel on the hub which will bear the load of the wheel and make a not so pleasant job a little easier. Keep in mind that you will need to have a shoe or object pressing in at the bottom of the tire like Charles had in this video to steady the wheel while loosening/tightening the bolt/nut. If you are actually changing a tire, this might help you keep your hands cleaner too because you would be touching the wheels less.

      or.......ya know tighten it in a star pattern like your supposed to do with every car....its common sense.....have your wheels fallen off before?

    Enjoyed the video. Like to mention one thing, if the tire store put your tires on with an impact wrench it could be very difficult to loosen the lugs up with the lug wrench in the tool kit. There is not length to it to apply enough of torque that might be required. I do a lot of traveling and I keep a harbor freight breaker bar with the appropriate socket in each one of my vehicle if needed.

  • @drwisdom1
    @drwisdom1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    A few additional comments. It is worth keeping an 18 inch breaker bar, 17mm socket, and short extension in your VW. In my VWs I keep a Snap-On SN4B that is a combination speeder and breaker bar which allows you to quickly change a tire at the side of the road (where you don't want to be). The wrench that comes in the jack kit it too short making it hard to undo bolts and the wrench splits if your tire changers used air tools and over-tightened the screws.
    I have the S model which doesn't have a sub-woofer inside the spare. I also have snow tires so I took out the wimpy spare and use one of the other season's full-size tire as my spare.
    I keep a Slime tire repair kit in my VWs (about $10 at Walmart). Once you get to your destination, or a safe location like a rest stop, you can fix the flat yourself in a short period of time, unless the tire is trashed.

    Thanks. I have a 2012 Jetta TDI Wagon and the jack is in a totally different place, but what confused me the most was the lug bolt covers. I thought they were the actual lug bolts. I'm glad I watched this video before being stupid during an emergency.
    The screwdriver as a driver tip was also very useful. I am definitely moving my full size spare to the Golf as mini-spares suck a**

    Just got a nail in my 2016 Sportwagen. Wanted to make sure I didn't break that plastic piece that secures the spare. I was like "oh gawd more plastic I probably broke". Glad I found this video that specifically shows I did it correctly.

    I have the same car, have owned VWs for over 40 years, and have a few comments. First, the scissors jack should only be used to change a flat while traveling (emergency). If you are at home you should be using a floor jack. You should replace the wimpy spare with a full size spare tire. In the summer I use one of my snow tires as a spare, and the reverse in the winter. If you use size 205-55/16 instead of a 225-45/17 tire then you can cut a custom shelf that fits over the tire and under the rear floor to store emergency equipment and other items. Jetta Sportwagens used to have that nice hidden shelf but it was eliminated on Golf Sportwagens. My Sportwagen doesn't have a speaker in the spare. If yours does it may prevent following the above recommendations.
    I always change my wheels and tires and tighten them to the proper torque, but most people go to tire stores where they often use an impact wrench with high torque to screw on the wheels. Then when the time comes you need to change a flat either the wrench isn't long enough for you to loosen the bolt or it breaks when you try. I always carry a Snap-On combination speeder/breaker bar shop.snapon.com/product/Speeders%2C-Chrome/1-2%22-Drive-17-1%2F4%22-Flex-Head-Speeder-Drive-Handle/SN4B in each of my vehicles. You can get them for around $50 on ebay. If you don't want to spend that much get an 18" breaker bar at Harbor Freight, extension, and 17mm socket.

    great video Charles. don't forget about the center of the wheel sticking to the hub. just an FYI. they don't always remove that easily

    • @randyfitz8310
      @randyfitz8310 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Brian Skinner: If it’s really rust-stuck to the hub, loosen the bolts a turn, lower the vehicle from the jack and roll it a few feet so the weight of the vehicle will "pry" the wheel from the hub, then proceed to change the tire.

    Do any of the current VW models include a full-size spare? It seems like many of the recently produced cars on the market include these silly sneaker tires. It's so nice to have a full size spare that won't be a limitation, especially when you are not near home.

    • @HumbleMechanic
      @HumbleMechanic  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dwight Bennett I think most of them have a compact. Some have a "full size", that is the same overall diameter, but a smaller wheel. Totally fine in my opinion.
      I LOVED that most VWs had full size spares. Sad they went away from it. There is MORE than enough room in the GSW for one.

    • @dwight.bennett
      @dwight.bennett 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      HumbleMechanic ah, that's a key distinction, that they have room for it, even if not included.

    Charles, I recently changed to a spare on my 2015 sportwagen, and promptly got a tire pressure light on the cluster. Question is, that when I repaired the OE Geneva wheel, it did not have a TPMS sensor. What do you think triggered the low tire icon on the cluster?

  • @Amazing-therian

    Great clip. Quick question. I've got a 2015 GSW I just picked up with 19 in Audi rims and low profile tires. I've got the stock all seasons that i'd like to swap out while its winter here in Colorado. Seems like I can do this with only the tool kit but want to be sure I've got the tires all torqued to spec. Not a gearhead but like to do it myself if i can....Would you say this approach is ok and if so, can you confirm the torque setting. Think I saw 89 foot pounds? Thanks!

    In my view, the switch to a scissor jack makes for a more cumbersome tire change. The cheesy multi-segment handle and its sloppy attachment to the jack is the worse part of the whole set up.

    hi HubleMechanic, could you please point out how to lift the gti (mine is 2014) in garage with floor jack and put it on jack stands? the 4 four points for VW jack is really short; after lift it with floor jack, you cannot find any space to put the jack stands in...
    the vw forum discussions didn't bring any confirmed methods. I'm trying to do tire rotation by myself. thank you for any suggestions.

    Great video! I was actually looking at a Gold Sport Wagon S for my mother. How is the new 1.8 turbo? It looks promising from reviews, but I'm not sure about power/reliability.

    • @HumbleMechanic
      @HumbleMechanic  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** THANKS!
      So far the 1.8 is okay. It is not as smooth as the TDI in my opinion. But I think some of that is the transmission. I do have concerns about carbon build up. We have been doing fuel rail recalls for a while now. We have found that even at low miles, they are getting build up on the backs of the valves. :(

    • @StealthTH1
      @StealthTH1 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      HumbleMechanic Would you say carbon buildup is worse on the new 1.8t versus the 2.0t TSI or about the same?

    • @NickCageRage1
      @NickCageRage1 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      HumbleMechanic Techron every two months - and always use 91 and up in any VW turbo. This is more or less what i have gathered from owning them. I wish the DSG and 2.0T made it into the gasser version of the Wagen, but I think it's ok with the regular auto and 1.8. Do you think it's a really bad idea to mod/chip the car and get the 1.8 into 2.0 territory, humble mechanic?

    • @drwisdom1
      @drwisdom1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If five years ago you were worried about the power of the 1.8 liter turbo (it is strong), then you should be more worried today now that it has been reduced to 1.4 liters.

    Not sure why you dislike the "widow maker". I actually find the old jack way faster to use. just attach its upper side to its place under the car, extend it until the bottom touches ground. Then lift. If your fingers know what to look for, no need to look under the car even.
    With this type I have to check and adjust the jack multiple times before it is in its place. May be it is only me. Hints how to get this jack in its place on first try are highly appreciated.
    Sadly, you cut this part off from the video.

    • @HumbleMechanic

    I was cringing this whole video. Have you not heard of the star pattern? When loosening or tightening lug nuts, you don't just go around the wheel in a clockwise, or random order. You're supposed to start with one nut, then go to the one furthest adjacent to it. This evens out the torque to the wheel mating surface and helps the wheel seat better.

    • @HumbleMechanic
      @HumbleMechanic  9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +splewy That does not apply when removing the wheels, what at about the 5:11 mark and you will see that is exactly how I did it.

    • @splewy
      @splewy 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      With the jump cut it was pretty easy to miss. It might have been helpful to actually mention it in the video, considering you removed the nuts all randomly.
