I grew up in Grand Forks, and lived there off and on for close to 30 years of my life. I should point out that I've lived in other cities within North Dakota, three other states, and a total of 5 countries, as well. What concerns me about Grand Forks is the following: the Columbia Mall is half empty, and there doesn't seem to be any sort of good solution in place to fill those stores or fix that problem. This is unlike West Acres shopping center in Fargo, which has very few empty stores, new stores are constantly opening, and there are events at the mall (beer and wine tasting, live music, art, etc) on a monthly basis. Secondly, when applying for jobs in Grand Forks, many employers have looked at my resume and said, "So... you grew up in Grand Forks, but didn't go to college here at UND? Why not?" This is an ignorant and close minded statement. These days, we have the opportunity to attend college anywhere in the world, either in person or online. There is no need to 'just' attend the university that is in our hometown. Why any employer would assume that we don't have Free Will, and the right to seek education/ life/ opportunities elsewhere is beyond me. That said though, no matter where I've lived, Grand Forks will always be 'home'.

It is the cleanest city I have every visited. You do t see litter on the streets or highways... I was amazed how well they maintain their city. They definitely show pride where they live!
Wow, the city has grown. I spent 2 years at the Air Force base from 1974-76. I remember Harry’s Sipper Market. I lived at 211 walnut street after I got married. We are thinking of visiting the city in September
I have lived in Grand Forks for 6 yrs, grew up in north dakota, lived all over the US and overseas, i enjoy my job and people here but it is way too expensive for what it is, my rents gone up 300 in a few yrs, when you talk to anyone about the high cost of living, being more than even fargo with less opportunities and population it is explained cause its a college town, yet places like fargo has 3 colleges and 2 tech schools. it is a good town, ok community but the cost of living is insane and makes it hard to justify staying here for a extended time. Even in real estate your paying so much more than you would anywhere else in ND mainly because property taxes seem to keep going up cause they cant keep business's here. Personally i say its not a bad place to start a job but wouldnt stay cause no matter how much you make the housing will out pace your earnings.
Lots of opportunities in North Dakota. We came into Grand Forks 15 years ago with a household income of $36k, this year, we are leaving with a household income over $400k. My wife and I both achieved advanced degrees, me in engineering, her in nursing. We have been trying to leave for 5 years, but kept getting sucked back in with good opportunities. Good problem to have. Now, we are headed out of state. If you need some new opportunities, keep your eyes open. There are great opportunities in North Dakota. You just have to be able to survive the harsh winters.
I don't thinkyou are accurately describing what winter is like in north dakota. Especially the wind and wind chill factors. Stop trying to sell my state, stop bringing awareness to it. It's not for everybody. Also you don't mention cost, energy food and goods more expensive, so relate the weather, below zero windshield, heating bills, no trees, empty prairies, ghosttowns,
@erichopp8833 thanks for your comments. Everything in all 50 states (and other countries) is expensive. Electricity in North Dakota is among the cheapest places in America. Food and Goods are about the same as any over place you go. Thank goodness for remote start during winter to pre heat the car! I’m sorry you feel so terrible and North Dakota and don’t want people seeing what the state has to offer - but for many people who have never even considered it - it’s important people in America know their options!

I live in Grand Forks. Winters are usually very harsh. That is not the worst of it. I am not sure what it is, but I think they think they are Canadians here. A few years ago the mayor wanted to raise the already not good sales tax by one percent. Now they want to raise it one percent more. Oh, and that isn't all. Right now the economy is bad and home sales are slumping due to interest rates. They keep raising my property taxes a lot every year. Don't forget about the unbelievable specials they tack on when you buy a home here. I haven't checked lately, but I bet the specials are 30 thousand, or higher on new homes. It truly is sickening.
Building new neighborhoods is EXPENSIVE! North Dakota is one of the few states in the country where the local government will not assist developers with putting in new streets, sewer lines etc... so developers creating much needed new housing are forced to create special assessments in order to finance the construction of the infrastructure. With such a short building window every summer and a shortage of skilled labor - its amazing they are able to build new homes at all!
Me gustaría vivir en gran forks!! Pero no tengo ideas como hacerlo. Primero porque soy latino, segundo no tengo familia en ND, pero me gustaría vivir ahi
North Dakota in general can do that... especially for those that put down roots and develop strong community ties. If your son wants to come back - or buy a home anywhere else in NoDak - our team covers the whole state. Call/Text/Email us to get that conversation started and we'll be happy to help.
😂 We have been trying to move out of grand forks for 5 years... we keep getting sucked back in with good opportunities. 🎉 Came here with a household income of $36k 15 years ago... My wife started out cleaning at the hospital. Worked her way into phlebotomy, then got into a nursing program. She graduated this last spring with her Nurse Practitioner Degree. Just signed a nursing contract in Minnesota. We are leaving with a household income of over $400k. Not a lot to do, the winters are harsh, definitely quiet and friendly though.
Many people find comfort with neighbors being able to see what's going on... especially clients of ours who leave to Arizona in the Winters... they love that their neighbors can see if cars/people are coming/going from their homes when nobody should be around!
Don't forget to mention that there's nothing to do 10 Grand Forks except drink. You will find a high percentage of people whose weekend pastime is getting blasted and doing stupid shit, and I'm not talking about 21 year olds. I know people I graduated with in the early nineties who literally still play beer pong on the weekends 🙄. I'm so glad I moved to Minneapolis and can't wait until I never have to visit this hellhole again.
It’s getting expensive to live anywhere, really. North Dakota, in general, is still extremely affordable compared to other places around the USA when weighing wages against costs. Thanks for sharing!
@@NodakNews I hear you! Local politics is always tough. Good thing the residents can vote out bad leadership. @LivinginNorthDakota nah it's getting worse every day. Especially GF. House prices are ridiculous. Works awesome as a homeowner, but I would hate to be a buyer right now.

If Grand Forks was designed the way Fargo is and took advantage of building around it's interstates it might be cooler. But it's still just a big small town in my opinion. Not that impressive at all.
Hi Tatiana! Thank you for bringing up this question. It's important to address and understand the inclusiveness of any community you are considering moving to. While it's true that Grand Forks and, generally speaking, North Dakota has not historically been very diverse, many in the community take pride in fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment. The community here values hard work and camaraderie, with many locals appreciating the efforts of anyone who contributes positively to the neighborhood and broader community. We believe that every individual's experience can vary, and we encourage you to visit and gauge the atmosphere for yourself. You might find that the warm smiles, neighborly attitudes, and the close-knit community vibe resonate well with you.
