Great. I remember singing this in college. I was the only countertenor in the group. This group is performing in a manner that I like. A choir with no one trying to out shine the others.....and no vibrato.
Musicians who want to hear as much as be heard.
Oh lord,we need this quiet,yearning beauty today! Written all those centuries ago in a different world,but oh how we need this divine medicine today.

Great performance. Very moving. No words to define it. "O magnum Mysterium" by Victoria is touching the heaven with the fingers. It is one of the greatest polyphonists from Spain, having in mind Cristobal de Morales and others. Music makes what the brilliance of Victoria is speaking to us about a better world through music in order to become us into a better spiritual human being citizen. Thanks to him, who decided to share the beauty ... permitting us to enjoy his wonderful jewel, the fabulous diamond that he left us in inheritance. So that with you, let us making this world into a better place. To tell you the truth… we have achived something, but we have to persevere ... it is not easy! But Victoria: you are here, alive, to help us. To help us with the best and deepest feelings that bring us lightness, spreading the beauty, solidarity, equality and social justice in the environment and the place where we have to live and work in... You make a wonderful calm performance full of astonishing subtlety, full of shadows and brightness together. It would be great another performance with a countertenor singing the lyrics of the Cantus with three of you… but mentally I was singing the words with you… Victoria has to be proud of you. No matter at all about the video: It seems to be on live for me too! Wonderful consort that works in perfect emotional connection, as a golden ring in which the diamond imitative melodies are linked, together with the emotions of the counterpointing rhythm, harmony… the whole texture! Anyway this is why I love TH-cam: it is sharing with everyone the beauty, permitting the democratization of the classical music, spreading musical citizenship all around the world. Thanks to Victoria, Viola da Gamba Consort of Voices of Music, TH-cam and Voices of Music for such as great time with you. God bless you. Even more: God already blessed you. Have sung this so many times, I am hearing the lovely, mystical Christmas text even as they play. Anything you can do with one of these little sacred motets can also be done on a consort of viols, and most likely was in practice.

As an ex Catholic atheist, I gotta say Victoria makes the best, and maybe only argument for belief. I am still not swayed, but almost man.

I wonder if it's easier to play in tune on the viol, since it has frets? Or is it just as hard as on the modern instruments of the violin family?
It's relatively easy to get into the ballpark, but then to fine tune the note is a bit more difficult. It's more straightforward to set down a temperament.
