  • Rainbow lorikeets saved from a paralysis syndrome that prevents them from being able to land on branches - and eventually fall from the sky - have been released into the wild.
The ailment, known as lorikeet paralysis syndrome, spread rapidly through south-east Queensland rainbow lorikeet populations earlier this year, bringing an inundation of unwell birds to wildlife hospitals across the region.
Normally confined to south-east Queensland, this year the syndrome has been seen as far south Grafton in northern New South Wales, as well as in Central Queensland.
Birds that are brought in for treatment with the RSPCA early can be nursed back to health, which usually takes four to eight weeks.
