- Hola! Yo soy Bridget, me encantan los idiomas y ahora me estoy enfocando en mejorando mi español. Cuando estaba en España yo leí un libro en español. En este video, les enseño como lo hice, el nuevo vocabulario que he aprendido...y despues, escribo un cuento utilizando cada nueva palabra que que aprendido....que resultó es un cuento muy raro. | Hi, I'm Bridget, I love learning languages and right now I'm trying to focus on improving my Spanish. When I was in Spain I read a book in Spanish. In this video I show you how I did it, the new vocabulary that I learned, and then, I try to write a story using every single new word that I learned. The result is something very weird, but I'm still proud of it!

A tip about ser/estar: for "ser" think of "essence"; for "estar" think of "a state". "Soy alegre" = I'm a joyful person (that's my essence) / "Estoy alegre" = I'm joyful (that's the state in which I am right now). A stunning job with that story!
Thanks for this. I think I know that in THEORY, but then in the moment my brain just *cannot* decide which makes more sense for the context. So I just guess (incorrectly), ha
This is a great way to improve. I started reading novels in Spanish years ago and started with Harry Potter. Honestly, I was never a huge Potter fan, but the books were readily available in Spanish, and it was obviously a lot of content! I was thrilled every time I finished one. As far as your grammar, don't be too put off by any negative comments. 1) You're still learning, and 2) As you read more of your books, you'll start to get a feel for the tenses. I'm quite impressed with your progress and look forward to your next video.

I am thinking your hearing Cuban Spanish growing up helped a lot. Your flow of words and pronunciation is nice and I think you must get many compliments from natives. I try not to give much attention to the compliments myself when someone has only heard me say a phrase or two. I think generally people want to be supportive so I have to take there comments with a grain of that salt. Nonetheless, you have proven by many phrases that you have a great beginning and future too. Thanks for your work and sharing. ❤
He visto la pelicula de Spiderwick pero no he leido las novelas, me picó la curiosidad por leer los libros ya que estoy recuperando el habito de la lectura y estos libros son faciles de leer ademas me encanta la temática de fantasia. Tambien es buena idea usar estos libros para aprender un idioma porque son muy faciles de leer.

Sí, medio cubana sin la capacidad de hablar en español como mi familia! Pero, todo en tiempo...
Mis tutores de español de italki usan "techo" para decir roof, y tengo una compañera del trabajo que es de Venezuela y ella tambien usa la palabra "techo" para decir roof. He estado aprendiendo español por once meses, y normalmente paso cinco horas cada semana en italki con mis tutores. Tengo una maestra de italki solo para conversación que no puede hablar ningun Ingles. My very first class on italki i had only been learning Spanish for 2 months and picked a Mexican girl that was also fluent in English, which was good because i didn't understand a darn thing in Spanish back then. I test and read as B1 now, but conversationally i am somedays A2 and somedays B1, kind of stuck in a rut. I only speak Spanish with natives speakers, and the free FSI Spanish Basic Course (not the Headstart) was very helpful to start understanding rapidly spoken Spanish, but sounds like you already have that taken care of.... April 2024 will be one year for me and i'm wanting to be B2 or C1 by my two year mark. At the moment I'm in the Tell Me In Spanish Hero Course and working on subjunctive.
Ah that makes sense, if "el techo" means roof in certain countries! I hadn't heard of the FSI or Tell Me in Spanish courses before. Where do you find these courses, and how do you choose which ones to try? Have you heard of this one? I found it one day but haven't spent much time on it. Maravillosa forma de aprender un idioma por tu cuenta. Se nota que eres muy inteligente, pero no solo eso, sino que eres una persona muy creativa (espero que entiendas la construcción "no solo, sino", significa "not only, but"). Has cometido algunos pequeños fallos en algunas cosas, pero se entiende perfectamente. Te voy a poner algunos para que sepas qué puedes corregir, si eso te ayuda y si te parece bien:
1)"Ningún detalle de lo que ha pasado a mi" se diría "ningún detalle de lo que me ha pasado"
2)"Soñando un poco, no sé de qué" se diría "soñando un poco, no sé con qué" (Soñar con, no soñar de, cambia la preposición).
3)"Escuché un ruido y pensé que eran mis mascotas, pero no han sido ellas", por la construcción de la frase se diría "pero no fueron ellas" ya que estás hablando de un hecho puntual que ocurrió y finalizó en ese momento, no es algo que perdure en el tiempo.
4)"Tenía tanto miedo que no sé qué habría hecho si la forma se hubiera estado ahí". Ese "se" antes de "hubiera" no es correcto. El resto de la construcción de la frase es perfecta.
5)"El baúl era desgastado por el tiempo" se diría "El baúl estaba desgastado por el tiempo".
6)"Me pregunté, ¿soy loca?" se diría "¿estoy loca?". Sin embargo luego dices "¿Soy una chiflada?" y ahí sí está perfectamente usado el "soy", porque has puesto el artículo "una" delante de chiflada, si no lo pones la pregunta sería también "¿estoy chiflada?".
7)"El duende no estaba haciendo huellas en la nieve" se diría "El duende no estaba dejando huellas en la nieve".
8)"Quiero que nos conozcas todos" se diría "Quiero que nos conozcas a todos" (Conocer algo va sin la preposición "a", por ejemplo "quiero conocer Sevilla o me gusta conocer muchos idiomas", sin embargo conocer a alguien siempre lleva la preposición "a".)
9)"Tú nos puedes alimentarnos" se diría "Tú puedes alimentarnos" o "Tú nos puedes alimentar" (Poner 2 veces el "nos es redundante", suena muy mal.)
10)"Voy a escribir mi número de teléfono a un papel" se diría "Voy a escribir mi número de teléfono en un papel".
11)"Si no olvidas sobre las lagartijas" se diría "Si no te olvidas de las lagartijas" (Has hecho la traducción literal del inglés "forget about the lizzards", algo que a nosotros nos pasa también al revés, no te preocupes).
12)"Eso es cuento por otro día" se diría "Eso es cuento para otro día".
Por lo demás todo genial. Tienes una pronunciación perfecta, con un magnífico acento. Dentro de muy poco, cuando hables español, nadie sabrá si eres estadounidense o de cualquier país hispanohablante. Te felicito.

Solo tengo una pregunta sobre "el baúl estaba desgastado por el tiempo" -- La palabra "desgastado" no es un adjetivo, describiendo como ES el baúl? "Como es el baúl?" "Desgastado" -- no es una característica, que necesita *ser* (y no estar)?
@@bridgetvslanguage Desgastado en este caso es un estado temporal, no es una característica esencial del baúl. Sería lo mismo que roto, no dirías que el baúl es roto, se dice el baúl está roto. Digamos que cuando está describiendo algo temporal se usa el verbo Estar, pero si es algo propio, característico o permanente se usa el verbo Ser, por ejemplo, el baúl es pequeño, o es bonito. Se usaría Estar en los siguientes ejemplos, el baúl está abierto (estado temporal, porque también puede estar cerrado), el baúl está impecable (en perfecto estado), que es lo contrario de desgastado.
Entiendo que los verbos ser y estar son complicados para una persona angloparlante, hay muchas variantes. Pero seguro que con la práctica lo irás entendiendo y asimilando.

A quick clarification at 8:15: "él no SUPO contestar" uses the simple past tense, indicating a specific action completed at a specific moment in the past and "él no SABÍA contestar", is in the imperfect tense, describing an ongoing or repeated situation in the past with no definite beginning or end.
Thanks for this. I don't know why or how, but the simple past tense of "saber" is something I've basically never used, throughout all of my attempts at learning Spanish. Which means I've been making this mistake a LOT, haha.

Te pasa lo mismo que a mi con el inglés o el portugues... conozco 'bastante' ambos idiomas pero me falta familiaridad con las expresiones usadas por los nativos de estos idiomas.
Por ejemplo, 'el duende no hacía huellas...' como tu escribes, es gramaticalmente correcto y se entiende pero... no se dice así.
Se dice 'el duende no dejaba huellas...'. No por alguna regla gramatical ni nada parecido, sino porque si, porque esa es la expresión usada en este caso.

el baul era desgastado ,no es correcto, el baul estaba desgastado........ el tipico error de los verbos ser y estar. es como el to be ingles
Until you get the ser vs estar and the estuve vs estaba or supo vs sabía(pretérito indefinido vs pretérito perfecto) right, you are not going to sound good in Spanish. I know it's hard for English speakers but that's how it is
