What is the role of the face in the construction of societies and the development their forms of political power? In today's episode, we are joined by Sean from 'Buddies Without Organs', a philosophy podcast which conducts close readings of the work of Deleuze and Guattari. Together, we examine the plateau entitled "Year Zero: Faciality" from Deleuze and Guattari's A Thousand Plateaus. We discuss the emergence of the face as a historical object which functions as a component in the deployment and mediation of forms of political and social power. In particular, we focus on the importance of the face of Jesus of Nazareth depicted as a 'White Christ', a visage which Deleuze and Guattari claim to be the face par excellence, one to which all other faces become subordinated. Moreover, the construction of the face entails serious implications for imperialism, racism, transphobia, and other political issues. Other figures discussed: Heidegger and Foucault.

@52:42 min Baudrillard whole concept of transparency is basically the opposite of what D&G lay down as a theory of opposing identification, they go in two different lanes. Where Baudrillard says you gotta become so transparent that the code can not control your transparency through commodified identity/identification so you become this unstoppable ‘intense’ force that is not able to be captured or not wanted to be captured and then there’s this imperceptible self that can’t be captured because it is not able to be located. I think a throughoutly concept would be the reversebility of imperceptible transparent so that we deterittorialize and reterittorialize on that line of
Flight constantly keeping a sort of rittonello to guide us on the mission of evading the apparatuses of capture and identification.

I love the idea of the "imperialism of the face". Also I haven't finished reading any DnG yet but I'm curious what their thoughts were on Cubism in relation to deconstructing the face

@Soho Jade Sun In his _Foucault_ on page 60 Deleuze writes: "Delaunay said: Cézanne has broken up the fruit bowl, and he didn't try to patch it up, like cubists did. _To open_ words, sentences and propositions, _to open_ qualities, things and objects: the task of archaeology is double, like Roussel's enterprise."

About the white wall.. in Deluze’s _Le pli_ he writes about Duns Scotus saying that on every white wall there are different shades of white... and in _Logic of Sensation_ painter Bacon stands before the white canvas looking for the potentialities...

Happy anniversary! I have been a returning listener this year :) Absolutely Love what you do, this is one of my favourite TH-cam channels!
PS. this was one of the most interesting episodes yet, amazing! Usually I just listen to your show without reading through the texts you are discussing (because they are too complicated for me and I am not knowledgeable enough in philosophy to a get grasp), but this is one of these instances where the topic is so intriguing for me that I will just have to look into it. I will definitely be returning to listen to this particular episode many times.
Thank you so much for your wonderful work (and all the guests in this episode) and for being so inspiring, you really sparked my interest in philosophy again - and is making me ponder about FACES.
Now I also have to check out the Wyrd Signal podcast :)

I'm having difficulty with some of the esoteric terms. What's a "practicing Christian?"

Speaking on Sean’s behalf, I’m not sure what he would say, but perhaps as opposed to someone who is only nominally Christian?

Although I don't have a great understanding of faciality at the moment, I would want to ask whether or not the role of indicating and stabilizing common emotions and intent is at all an important consideration for D+G as an essential part of social cohesion. The masks, for example, are perhaps one of the largest instances of us hiding our faces away, at least part of it, but this seems to have caused more tension between people and made them seek their individuality through a "commodification of identity" on the part of the corporations. How would you say the masks we had back in 2020-21 relate to the idea of faciality, and how could the system derail this initial movement into deterritorialization?

i saw this coming from the very beginning, in the second half you guys talk about creating new and subversive faces by deliberately introducing those deviations you talked about previously, in this butlerian mode
the thing is, the opposites have been united all along, we cannot spin the dialectic faster than it spins itself

One of you keeps saying "significance." Actually, it's "signifiance" (or signifying totality), a neologism. I'm not trying to be petty, but these things should be gotten right.
