    Oh boy, a KVM is a really neat piece of technic.. Unfortunately my rack is in the basement and it's a bit more comfy to SSH or open up a graphics console from my desk down to the server.
    Regarding firewall appliances: my suggestion would be a whitebox appliance running either OPNsense or pfsense (boils down to what you prefer, both are really good opensource firewalls built around the packetfilter pf). That's just more options for you - and free security updates/bug fixes/upgrades versus a used proprietary firewall (e.g Watchguard, Fortinet, Cisco ...). The latter ones tend to have the "you need a contract to get xy"-model.

    You have a few options for your firewall Pfsense which will require AES-NI. Those Zeons you have don't support AES-NI so virtualizing PF on one of those would be out of the question. However, you can Ebay some cheap gear than install PF on it. Also, you can look at Open Sense which is a spin-off from PF it does not require AES-NI your last option is to look at Ubiquiti.

    Build a pfsense firewall

    • @MikeBzd
      @MikeBzd 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I second this notion! PFSense is a fantastic firewall. Can certainly be used in an enterprise capacity. ClearOS is actually another great firewall as well. Personally have been using a mix of both.

    Can always get a low profile rack mount chassis and build your own network security appliance. You can very easily get something like an embedded atom based supermicro Mini-ITX board on the second hand market and do an install of PFSense. This would make for a very energy efficient solution with more than enough bandwidth for a substantial lab. I love embedded boards for that reason. Been using mine for about 3 years. Never had any down time unless there has been some weather or if my ISP has a fault. Writing this comment, the appliance's up time is about 4 months as of today.

    New video any time soon? I started building my own homelab with 2 HP DL380 G5, 24port Gigabit + 2 SFP+ 10gigabit Mikrotik switch and a few raspberry pi’s for a docker monitoring cluster. I’m running XCP-NG as my hypervisors and Xen Orchestra as my management interface.

    Try MikroTik routers. They are rather cheap and have lots of enterprise stuff inside. Also you can find some old Cisco routers on eBay, they would be slow, but you will get lots of skills.

      Electrical Engineering Channel MikroTik uses their own Linux-based OS - RouterOS. It supports almost everything, you can ever imagine: from TFTP and DHCP servers to BGP and OSPF routing, GRE over IPsec VPN etc.

    Have you thought about trying PfSense as a firewall/router? It's pretty easy to use/set up and is open source.

    I rather appreciate your setup! May I make a few recommendations: When speaking into the microphone: Please consider using a popfilter. The video editing is great, I would however suggest raising your volume to match the volume of the musik in non-spoken areas... not sure if I am explaining this correctly. Where you are not speaking, yet have musik playing, it is much lauter than in instances where you are speaking. OR perhaps lower the musik to match the levels of your voice. The background musik is just a little too laut in comparison to your voiceover. Perhaps lowe it a little bit. Otherwise great videos.
    Also would suggest PFSense or ClearOS for your firewall needs. PFSense does offer a few greater options when it comes to network monitoring... at least in my experience. They can be installed upon virtually any box.... recommend having 2 NICs at minimum. To fulfill your 1U request, I would suggest purchasing one: Dell, HP, IBM, Lenovo usw. Building 1Us can be a bit of a headache. Lawrence Systems talks a great deal about his uses with it. Marc Furneaux has a very extensive guide to configurations and installation should you require any assistance! Otherwise keep up the great work!

    try either a mikrotik router. try routerbaord 2011 or 1100, or a cisco 2620xm from ebay. about £50/$60
    or try virtual PFSENSE or OPENSENSE. drop me a pm on google hangouts if you need a hand or discord: cha0s
