It's cool, but it would have been awesome to see how you run the fan power cables and how you mounted them inside. :-(

Thanks for the upload! It's great to see your rack and to hear about some of the gotchas you ran into. I'm pondering where I should have my r610 live... It's too loud for my office, so it's temporarily in my living room. It sounds like your pine box really helps knock down the noise, though. Since you've changed up the exhaust system, have you played around with the fan properties of the servers' BIOS?

Hey Rob, love how you have your little lab here setup man. Id like to do something similar. I am super nub when it comes to networking/server grade stuff. I came into a few different pieces of hardware, 2x Dell PowerEdge 6600's, a HP Proliant DL160 G6, and get a load of this, a Facilis Tech Terrablock... Its a 24bay SAN it seems... Wild looking for sure. I know nothing about the terrablock, at all, and it seems that they have their own proprietary software. Do you think the PE 6600s are even worth trying to run..? Or is it going to cost me more in electricity than its worth? The Proliant blade I just got myself a Xeon X5675 and plan on getting another one, I need to get a bunch of DDR3 ECC, will do that soon Im sure. I am super curious about this terrablock though, you know anything about them?

Have you considered using a hinge so the the front can swing out?

I had thought about that, but with the way that it sits in the room it would be a pain move it like that. That's why I went with the wooden dowels and drilled holes to match, so I can easily slip it on and off by pulling it straight out. It's worked out great so far and there is still enough play in it that i can swing it to one side or the other to get a hand in there if need be.

      @@robwillisinfo Ah alright,
I guess even if you where to hinge it anyways, the back of the rack would have had to been screwed down into the floor or wall, since the front would be so heavy.
      Thanks for the reply!

How do you keep the noise down? I had a Dell PowerEdge in my office temporarily to install Linux on it, and that thing sounded like a jet engine, it was so noisy. Plugging in both power cables quieted it down a little bit, but it still generated quite a lot of noise.

Yeah, if the server detects any issues, it ramps the fans up. Updating firmware also helps. The newer one (hell, the rX10 series even) were pretty quiet though. Which model did you work on?

dont you get negative air pressure in that room?

Great observation! The answer is yes but the impact appears to be minimal, and the benefit of removing the heat far out weighs any negatives (pun intended). :)
